Tooth extraction on blood thinners

Reassuring, I’m on 2.5mg twice a day, usually 9am and pm.

i take warfarin and a few weeks ago asked at the anticoagulant clinic about stopping for dental work. I was told the danger of a clot from stopping the drug was worse than the possible bleed so they no longer recommend stopping it.

Similar around 6 months ago. The dentist got my GP approval to stop a similar medication 2 days before, and after the extraction. No problems with bleeding ir healing - just make sure you follow the advice of the dentist, for after the extraction , to the letter. Good luck.

My husband had an extraction a couple of weeks ago and he just stopped his apixiban the day before . The dentist wrote the instructions down for us so it was very clear . No problem at all.

If your dentist is any good, he/she will be quite familiar with your situation and will be able to advise accordingly.

I take apixiban and had an extraction without stopping it at all. I had a toothache for a while, not excruciating but uncomfortable. My dentist gave me an X-ray and said there was nothing wrong with it so I went to another dentist who took a photo with a special high resolution camera which showed up a crack which doesn’t appear in an X-ray apparently. Anyway he said he could pull it out immediately which he did which was a first for me. It hardly bled at all and I’ve had no problems at all. It was the last molar on the bottom so I haven’t missed it.

Yes, DH's wasn't a pre booked appointment. Just a ln on the spot decision to remove it there and then, even though he had taken his pill a few hours earlier.
No problems.

My Dentist confidentiality told me no problem with being on Apixaban as I was due a back tooth replacement filling. He nicked my gum and it took 90 mins for it to stop bleeding so he could continue the job.
Next time I'm going to stop it for at least 24hrs.

Your dentist will advise. Not teeth but I had abdominal surgery last year, no apixiban for 24 hours pre surgery. All was well

Stopped my Apoxiban this morning. Was told to stop it two days before procedure.Not dental but having pacemaker replaced with biventricular one on Tuesday.There may be a lot of bleeding but the cardiologists know what they're doing.

Unfortunately had to have two teeth removed whilst on Apixaban, the guidance from my dentist, is that to continue with medication,the possible consequences of stopping it are more serious. Minimal bleed following extractions, even without adrenaline.

I’m on Rivaoxaban and I’ve just had an extraction and implant without stopping my meds. It was fine, very little bleeding and no pain.

Different blood thinners and different procedures have different protocols for stopping and starting.

Just ask the health professional who is undertaking the procedure. They have the national guidelines to hand and are used to providing this advice.

I was on Apixaban and was just told not to take the morning one. I used to take one night and morning. (I am now on Edoxaban)
