Cost of a cut and blow dry?

I only moved to this area last year and when I found a hairdresser she charged me £30 for a cut and blow dry. I have very short straight hair so it's not a massively difficult or long job.

After Christmas the price went up to £33 and my next cut in June is going to be £36.

This is a semi-rural village and it's an extension in the house - not swanky by any standards.

When she did my highlights I was a bit shocked that it was £110 - the salon I went to prior to moving charged me £80.

Just wondered how much others pay?

As I was due to attend a wedding and wanted a bit of pampering and a different hairstyle, I booked into a local hairdressing salon and had a wash/re-style cut/blow dry which was absolutely lovely and cost £29.00. Well worth the money.

My usual hairdresser that comes to my home gives me a dry cut and costs £10. She is the funniest person and makes me laugh and does a good job. She knows all my family and I have booked my next appointment with her. East Midlands.

My dry cut is £5.50 for pensioners so I’m happy at that.

I am in Dorset. I have a mobile hairdresser. I pay £105 for highlights, cut and blow dry. Last year it was £85.

I live in NI and pay £15 for a weekly blow dry. I think it’s worth every penny. When I visited family in London recently my blow dry cost £26. It was costly but saved me flying over with dryer, brushes, straighteners and products and still making a hash of doing my own styling. I don’t smoke , drink or eat out much so it’s my little luxury.

I pay £50-ish at a local hairdresser. She’s good. But not sure why women’s haircuts seems to cost so much more than men’s

I’m in the south and pay £40 for a cut and blow dry and I’m quite happy with that as my hairdresser is good. I don’t have colour.

£15 for a dry cut here.

I have just paid £100 for a half head of highlights and a trim In Edinburgh. Its quite a lot but I have curly hair and they specialise in that and it’s a city

I shampoo my hair before I go. The hairdresser wets it, then cuts it. He blows it dry, having put some gel or other on it, then uses a little hairspray. He is really good at cutting, taking his time. It costs £17.00. I keep expecting it to go up, and would willingly pay a little more.

If it’s good it’s priceless

£65 Harrogate. I have autoimmune Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia and my lovely hairdresser cuts it cleverly to hide it as far as possible (though it’s getting more difficult each visit as it’s been galloping away recently). She is very gentle and sympathetic re the pain of the scarring and I wouldn’t trust anyone else.

Reading all these replies, the most surprising thing I have seen is that there are still concessions for pensioners.

Hertford £46 just for a cut. 2 price increases since Christmas. The hairdresser that cuts my hair is very popular and appointments have to be made weeks in advance. I think I’m a rarity in not having my hair blow dried.

I'm in Yorkshire, have very short hair and pay £45 in village salon.

Can't believe some of the prices!
There is a hairdresser near me who charges £12 for shampoo and blow dry and does a VERY good job, Also offers cut and blowdry for shall we say older ladies, for £15!!!
Yet only a couple of miles away in the shopping centre it is £28 for shampoo and blow dry and results vary depending on which stylist you get. In the city 5 miles away it is more expensive.

Let's look at costs the national minimum wage is £12.21. Hairdressing equipment scissors which are bought by the stylist £300 upwards. Maintenence such as balancing and sharpening monthly £100. Then there towel washing and drying shampoo and conditioner costs. Combs, brushes and all manner of paraphernalia chairs, brooms waste disposable all add to the cost. If you have colour the products are very expensive per tube if you need 5 tube to get he colour you want that's a £100 at least. They don't last once opened so not always possible use on another client.
Hope this very brief outlay of costs helps you understand if you are getting value for money from your Hairdresser.

I pay £26.50 for a cut and blow dry every four weeks. When my hairdresser was off sick and they couldn’t fit me in I went to a salon in town and it was around £70.

I don't know where you live but the prices can't have done up in 20 years!!

I don't live in a city or large town but £40-£50 for a cut and blow dry is normal here.

I agree Allira, my husband pays more than that at the barbers, he only has it cut, he's always telling me about some complicated "fade" technique younger men have whilst he's waiting. His is a quick trim, in and out in no time sometimes it doesn't look that different, but it's more than £12. shock

I was a hairdresser for 30 years and my God I wish I was young and healthy enough to still be doing hair. We also live in a village 20 mins from a town and I’ve been going to a girl who has a cabin in her garden for the past year. She charges £58 for a cut & blow dry and £150 for a full head of highlights with no cut! Outrageous, plus she has no lights to bring it up quicker and a couple of times her kids have been home, little one playing (annoying me) whilst doing my hair. So no I don’t think I will be going again as that is ridiculous money. It’s more or less the same in the shops in our village but at least there’s no kids, my hi lights come up white and I get a couple of cups of tea. It’s such a shame the mobile girls have got greedy because I was mobile for many many years but always kept my prices a bit lower than a salon so I would be seen as competitive. Since Covid many many things have gone up, unfortunately I fail to see why in a lot of cases, or is this just more proof of the greed that seems to have taken hold in recent years? For example I would charge approximately £35 for short hair cut and blow dry and it is £50 where I go. I was always busy and I always got my products from the cash & carry.

dragonfly46 Sat 03-May-25 14:38:52

I pay £47 for a cut and blow dry. I have known my hair dresser a long time, he shaved my head free when I was having chemo and can now cut the little I have left so it looks good.
Wonder if we go to the same place kitty.

LaCrepescule Sat 03-May-25 15:00:57

£70 for a cut and dry, worth every penny, my hairdresser’s brilliant.
I do live in the south-east though.

kittylester Sat 03-May-25 15:05:03

No, i don't think so, dragonfly. Mine is owned by a woman.

CBBL Sat 03-May-25 16:28:56

I pay £25 for a dry trim. I don’t like my hair blow dried, as it removes what little curl my hair still has. I wash my hair before going to the hairdresser to save the cost of the shampoo! I’m 77 and a Pensioner (no discounts available in any of the salons I’ve checked). I’m in the North East.

I worked in Cambridge and my local hairdresser moved there in 2017, so I thought it great to do at lunchtime. Big shock = £65!!. My Camb commuter village has just gone up to £36, with £70 for basic colour/cut and dry.
