I’m researching online events, people etc from the year 1915 for a quiz.

It could be a question with 3 possible answers to choose from

Anagrams of famous people from that era

Political people etc

Actors/Actresses

I am trying to make it a fun activity.

Do you have any ideas please that I could add to the WI quiz ?

Q. Which ocean liner was torpedoed and sunk by a German U boat in 1915?

A. The Lusitania.

That's a difficult year. I don't know if much, except WWI battles would be even in the most avid trivia nerd's repertoire. On checking 1915 in Wikipedia, you read about "first use of poison gas", loads of ships sunk, zeppelin attacks and the like. The US rejected a move to give women the vote.

Maybe on further reading something about the war poets might turn up. But revolutionary art, music, etc was all on hold. (Rite of Spring 1913 is a popular subject for quizzes, as are all those turn of the century authors, artists, composers and inventors)

Why did you choose that particular year?

Many thanks folks. My WI are having a celebration tea+ quiz as 1915 was when the WI was formed, so they tell me.

NanKate Thu 07-Aug-25 12:44:15

Allira I like the trivia quiz.

Allira Thu 07-Aug-25 15:19:16

Hope it goes well. 🙂

Yes, I did notice that the WI was founded in 1915. That, and Einstein's general relativity seemed to be the only points of general interest not war-related. I'm interested to read other facts brought up here.

It’s a bit of an oddball but maybe for one of those sheets that you get to work on at break and in between rounds.

Can you make numbers 1 to 10 using only the digits in 1915 and any mathematical function. ie

1 x 1 will give you 1
1 + 1 will give you 2

I once had great fun making 1 to 100 with the year 1995.

How about a picture round - can you name these people born in 1915?

sandye Fri 08-Aug-25 13:42:53

WI, I would prob go with something like 'how much was a loaf of bread'. What year was sugar rationed etc.

hellymart Fri 08-Aug-25 13:44:35

Agree, the picture round idea is a good one (from baubles) and they're always popular. Here's a list - with photos - of people born in 1915 and they include Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday and Ingrid Bergman. www.famousbirthdays.com/year/1915.html

Perhaps in advance you could ask members to find some family photos of perhaps grandparents or uncles and aunts who were born that year, or just have another bit of fun, where you all bring in a photo of your grandparents or parents alive at that time and the idea is to write on the back (in pencil) your name, and everyone has to look at the pictures and see if they can guess which person brought in the picture. You could also do it another way where you have that picture and then another picture of your member who brought it in, as a child, and you try to match the child to the other picture.. It can be quite fun even just seeing the friend you made 20 years ago as a 7 year old scruff or, ballet dancer or whatever. You sometimes see pictures where the person has hardly changed at all and are easily recognised but then others you cannot believe that it is them in the older picture.

Good idea.

Not related to 1915 but we once went to a party where we were asked to take a photo of ourselves as babies and we had to guess who was which guest.
We didn't know many people so it was more difficult for us but a few people got me! Surely I must have changed since then? 👶
(No, I never had a dummy!)

Edith Cavell was executed by the Germans in 1915. She helped hundreds of British and European soldiers over the border into Holland . The Germans called it treason

Arthur Miller was born in 1915. Rearranging the letters of 'Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller' (Play and author) gives: ‘A harder reality humbles Loman fast’. Crossword anagram.

RobertaDanversWalker Fri 08-Aug-25 15:35:12

Sorry, just re-read your post this time with my glasses on and I see you are asking about 1915, not 1913! Question still stands though.

PreGran Fri 08-Aug-25 16:01:02

Most popular girls/boys name?
Population of uk?

I was also thinking of most popular names of say the 1930s PreGran.
Because everyone can join in and it's not just the nerds.

We had many quizzes on zoom during the pandemic. We had 100 top boys' names of 1973. We oldies were good at it but younger ones thought names like William and Harry would be on the list and ofcourse they weren't.
We did it as a knockout. As soon as you got a wrong answer you were out that round.

Oh bother, I have just realised it's only 1915 you are looking for.

What about guessing from a choice of 3 or 4 incorrect answers like that quiz programme;
"Bridge of lies"

i.e. Was penicillin discovered that year? Was the National Trust established? With a correct answer hidden in there.
Women first got the vote in Denmark.

RobertaDanversWalker your name intrigued me and the name Bob Danvers Walker came to mind.

I looked him up and he was a radio announcer from years ago when I was a small child.

Are you related to him?
