New baby gift-unsure of appropriate amount

A niece by marriage is about to give birth. I rarely see her or her parents and am not sure what value of gift I should give on the birth of the baby. Any advice much appreciated

I imagine a nice baby blanket with a card should suffice.

I’d just keep it simple and not stress too much. A small gift around £20–£30 is usually fine, especially if you’re not super close. Something practical like baby clothes, blankets, or even a gift card always goes down well. It’s more about the thought than the amount.

A friend of my son had recently had a baby and I have given him and his partner two boxes of nappies for a six month old.. As I think they get inundated with stuff for newborns
They were very grateful

A gift card for £20 - £30 for Boots (some other high street stores might still exist) then they can choose baby toiletries, nappies, toys or even clothing. Sorted.

If you rarely see her or her parents, is a gift necessary?

Why not just send a card?

hamster58 Mon 01-Sept-25 07:03:34

Thanks everyone so far. To answer whether a gift is necessary, yes certainly I feel it is, and in the opposite direction, it has been incredibly generous. That’s probably why I don’t want to do the wrong thing

I would give a £20 gift voucher for John Lewis or Boots, as already suggested.
You won’t know what they have got already or their tastes I would imagine?

My friends daughter recently had a baby, I gave a card and a Baby Memory Box, ( from Etsy) to keep all the cards and first booties, baby name tag etc in. She was very happy to get something different.

I would go with this. I would either crochet or buy a small baby blanket. I recently made a small one for the girl who brings the Avon catalogue and she was very pleased with it for her new daughter.

My husband's nephew and his wife recently had a baby. We see them only at weddings and funerals. We sent a Next giftcard for £40.

A gift card from M&S and a wee hat or pair of bootees?

New parents now seem to value money or vouchers more than gifts.I would send £30 in a nice card, or voucher for same amount.

My neighbours D had a baby nearly 3 years ago, I gave an M&S voucher for £25 which they were delighted with.
I know another is “ being anticipated “so if that is so I shall up it to £30 .

Very good friends of my children will be having their baby this week, I’ll be getting a Deliveroo voucher, about £40 so they can get a meal delivered amongst the upheaval.

Etsy is a source of ideas for baby boxes but what also caught my eye there was a mobile for the nursery which would be a source of fascination for the baby for months - possibly years.

When my nieces had babies I made up a little hamper of baby things they might like to try such as different brands of baby wipes, Sudocrem or similar, soap/baby bath etc. There are so many out there to choose from. I also put in a big bar of chocolate and/or a mini bottle of wine for the new mum when the need arises smile

Loving these ideas and comments. Thanks everyone

I bought my BF’s son and d-in-law a high chair from JL.

Usedtobeblonde Mon 01-Sept-25 11:27:51

That is a very generous gift for a non family member.
I an sure they appreciated it.

I’d fear that gift cards/vouchers would just be a nuisance as in One More Thing to have to do something about, so I’d go for a present - prob a garment as fun to choose.

MollyNew Mon 01-Sept-25 12:41:21

The Ikea high chair is a bargain at around £15 and gets top marks in most reviews. My step children both have them and we also have one here for when they visit.

I would say £30 voucher for Boots or M&S and a pack of 3 muslins wrapped with love xx

I too make up a little baby hamper of things like baby wipes, nappies, shampoo, bath stuff and a small teething rattle and a nice photo frame. All put in a shoe box covered in baby gift wrapping and tissue paper used. You could use pink or blue as appropriate.
