Hi ladies
I have been clearing out the cupboards and have discovered several bottles of champagne. There is no drink by date and I wanted to ask if anyone knows how long it can be kept for?
Many thanks

I did a tour of some champagne houses recently and asked them this question. They said "once it left them it should be drunk within a year!" I think give it a try, if it isn't to your liking mix it with something else. Make champagne cocktails! Enjoy

In all the many years I’ve had of wine drinking (ahem!) I’ve only ever opened ONE bottle that was ‘corked’. Eurgh!
No mistaking it should it happen.

It's off and it smells off!

It doesn't mean having a bit of loose cork floating in it.

How do I know if it’s corked. Is that the correct term?

I don't mind coming round to test it for you. I'm kind like that. Or, if you're not sure, taste some and if it's not good, use it up in cooking.

Great idea. Spag boll, with red wine 😋

Open them and see!

5 yrs for non vintage. Try it and if not up to pay I would freeze it in smaller quantities and use it in cooking. I do this for any wines that I don't thoroughly enjoy drinking.

I have got a huge Magnum that is now from 1994 I was hoping to keep it for my GD's eventual wedding, no chance then??

Dunno. Have fun finding out! It may have gone off, but it won’t be poisonous.

Sago Thu 30-Oct-25 09:42:34

Real champagne would not have a plastic cork, sparkling wine maybe.

JackyB Thu 30-Oct-25 09:25:30

If you open a bottle and find it's a little off, there are a few things you can try, such as sauces or some desserts. If only slightly in doubt you can jazz it up with some liqueur or fruit syrup, as in Kir or Kir Royale or cocktails.

If the corks are plastic, storing lying down won't make much difference.

Pour it down the sink?!!! Noooo!

RosieandherMaw Wed 29-Oct-25 23:21:28

I've yet to see a "best before" or "drink by" date on a bottle of wine let alone Champagne!
Try bit and see.hmm

Nightsky2

We have a wine seller but no butler😂.
Champagne and wine will go off if not stored properly and can and does go off even when stored properly. We’ve been disappointed more than once. I suggest you either drink it or pour it down the sink.

Does he sell much?

foxie48 Wed 29-Oct-25 20:50:53

I keep my left over champagne with my leftover chocolate!

It’s like that phrase “left over wine”….🤷‍♀️

Oh Pantglas2 I think left over wine is an urban myth 😵‍💫
