Hi ladies
I have been clearing out the cupboards and have discovered several bottles of champagne. There is no drink by date and I wanted to ask if anyone knows how long it can be kept for?
Many thanks

Hold on, I’ll ask the butler.

It doesn't keep forever. My Dad used to buy old bottles from a vintner on the off chance that some of them might still be drinkable.

Lathwaites amongst others recommend 3-5years for non vintage, and up to 10 for vintage. That’s a broad answer, their website has more details.

Ha! Ha! Ha!

Have the bottles been laid flat?

If so there is a chance they may be OK.

If they have been stored upright, they won’t be drinkable.

Crack them open..Enjoy.... . You never know?

depends whose house it's in...

pably15 Wed 29-Oct-25 18:43:42

we never have that problem .

Georgesgran Wed 29-Oct-25 18:45:44

Definitely open and try.

As others have posted, it depends on whether they were laid down or upright along with temperature (wine/champagne likes a constant temperature not fluctuating)

Ask some friends round, pop the corks and taste 🥂🍾 enjoy (hopefully)

Oh Pantglas2 I think left over wine is an urban myth 😵‍💫

That’s great, thanks everyone.
ASK THE BUTLER 🤣🤣🤣

We have a wine seller but no butler😂.
Champagne and wine will go off if not stored properly and can and does go off even when stored properly. We’ve been disappointed more than once. I suggest you either drink it or pour it down the sink.

I keep my left over champagne with my leftover chocolate!

Does he sell much?

RosieandherMaw Wed 29-Oct-25 23:21:28

I've yet to see a "best before" or "drink by" date on a bottle of wine let alone Champagne!
Try bit and see.hmm

Kate1949 Wed 29-Oct-25 23:27:24

Pour it down the sink?!!! Noooo!

JackyB Thu 30-Oct-25 09:25:30

If you open a bottle and find it's a little off, there are a few things you can try, such as sauces or some desserts. If only slightly in doubt you can jazz it up with some liqueur or fruit syrup, as in Kir or Kir Royale or cocktails.

If the corks are plastic, storing lying down won't make much difference.

Sago Thu 30-Oct-25 09:42:34

Real champagne would not have a plastic cork, sparkling wine maybe.

Dunno. Have fun finding out! It may have gone off, but it won’t be poisonous.
