My 11 year old dgd has inherited my tetchy skin. Using Zerobase as a shower gel helps but she hates using it. I’m hoping that someone can recommend a shower gel, and possibly a shampoo as she gets very sore behind her ears, that will soothe her skin but not feel so medical. She’s having a difficult time at the moment; nothing I can do about most of it but, with your help, I might be able to bring a little cheer in this area

We are a family of eczema sufferers prevention is the cure as such, we use creams and shampoos prescribed by doctor, the shampoo isn't the best smelling but it's brilliant, the creams you can use as a soap as well as a cream..

So many useful suggestions, but always check out contra-indications if other essential medicines are being taken.
Good luck.

Hi - I get psoriasis since 13 yrs behind and in ears , scalp . I found best thing is to ignore if possible , keep moisturised and no SLS of perfume so use Zero base shower gels and non perfumed Faith in Nature shampoo ( no SLS / perfume/no itch) - works for me anyway

Definitely ask in your local health shop. There are many fragrant-free and chemical-free products available. Most are more expensive than those found in mainstream shops but so much better.

I find Aveeno products help .for skin and hair . Steroids don’t help me . Neither does astringent stuff. Some people like Ginger body shop but it doesn’t help me .

You’re right AuntieE, there it is a matter of trial and error but it helps to hear what other people have found works. I had never heard of Spots and Stripes but have now ordered some for my gd to try as I think it will appeal to her.

I used to know someone who suffered really badly because of eczema all over his body.

He used to get Aveeno products on repeat prescription which l don't think he didn't paid for.

He swore by all.of their products especially the shower wash.

I'm sure you can something sorted
fron reading the the good advice on these posts.

Choose something that contains no perfume.

Really you should ask her GP or the practice nurse what would be advisable.

What suits one person, may well not suit someone else.

Several friends with bad eczema swear by AVEENO products. They’re not cheap but are lovely to use apparently. They’re sometimes in special offer in Boots.

I get the body wash and cream on repeat prescription so it might be worth checking out .

I have "dodgy"skin too and I find the Faith in Nature products work for me.

I have sensitive skin and usually use Sanex.

Jennifer Aniston apparently uses Aveeno - this may entice your GD to use it!

Yes I would check out Spots and Stripes too. My 12 year old grandson uses the products. Specifically for teens and they look quite cool

Bluedaisy Wed 03-Dec-25 14:47:14

Have you looked at spots & stripes children’s range of toiletries for teens that is good for skin?

I use products from gruum. Solid shampoo and conditioner and other skin care products. All natural, no plastics etc. British company with a very comprehensive web site
(I can't find how to make the first u as an umlaut in gruum)

Tesco’s F&F Wishwash is approved for newborns, does hair and body. I also use it as a handwash.
I have very dry skin and find it helps.
Only 99p so possibly worth a try?

….And whilst in the health food shop, some hypercal cream might ve nice for behind the ears. It’s a mix of hypericum and calendula. I’d steer clear of anything with loads of chemicals, preservatives etc in.

Green People are excellent. They have a whole range for children too. If all of this is too costly, then using an unscented soap or a natural one from a health food shop, might be a start.

Aveeno is good, but have a look at the QV range of moisturising products.
Two of my grandsons have X-linked ichthiosis and QV ointment and cream were recommended at an ichthiosis day in Glasgow several years ago.

Just had another thought. Have you looked at Weleda products.
They are excellent and if you want advice just give them a call.

Thank you all. At least it looks as though I can sort out one problem for my dgd.

Elusivebutterfly Tue 02-Dec-25 14:26:48

I have excema and seborrheic dermatitis, which commonly causes problems behind the ears and on the scalp. If your DGD has sore ears, she may have the same thing.
I use Aveeno shampoo and conditioner. Other brands of shampoo aggravate my skin.
Aveeno cream is good as an all over moisturiser, as is Nivea. I get Epimax cream on prescription, though you can buy it otc. I put it on pre shower as well as after and just use a little unperfumed shower cream or soap. Shower gel is very drying.
Everyone's skin is different and I am allergic to some things that help a lot of people, such as Sudocreme.

My son, has very dry skin rather than eczame and uses Simple shower gel and then Aveeno moisturising lotion.

Sanex Skin Therapy is good, and the packaging doesn’t make it look like a specialist product.
