Searching for Bel Paese soft Italian cheese this morning, right down a rabbit hole, available from Amazon of course, now I know it isn’t freely available I really want it.

Is there anything in particular anyone misses?

I remember my Grandma having a Terry’s of York casket,
the glamour! with wee drawers, layer of Langue de Chat before the good stuff underneath, violet creams, hazlenut swirls, butterscotch.
Callard and Bowser’s butterscotch wrapped separately in foil in a little box, I preferred to a tin of Sharp’s toffees, the dentist’s delight.

It has been a looong time but I still crave Huntley and Palmer’s Breakfast Biscuits, the factory in Reading long gone,
New Zealand red Cheddar cheese, nutty and delicious.

I remember freshly baked oven bottoms, large flat bread cakes also sometimes called barm cakes, they tasted like heaven when warm from the bakers, sliced with a bit of butter spread that would melt. Was in Lancashire, near the Pennines, but haven’t found the same delicious bread either there are down here in London.

Also potato cakes. The ones they sell now are awful.

I agree. I’ve had to resort to making my own.

I get Picard frozen pearl onions from Ocado - but sadly no sauce. I buy them mainly to make coq au vin more authentic but they're good in any slow cooked recipe,

You have to grit your teeth when you see the price, but they last me a long time.

Cremola Foam. My friend bought me some for Christmas - goodness knows where she found it but I had (apparently) told her that as a kid, I loved it!

I remember Cremola Foam too……even recall the advertising slogan “Cremola Foam fizzes and foams……etc”.

Anyone remember Gray Dunn Caramel Wafers? They weren’t covered in chocolate though but they were so yummy!

Koo Apricot Jam, made with whole fruit from South Africa. Mum used to make me a sandwich of it when I got home from primary school. It was so tangy and delicious I preferred it even to strawberry jam. You can no longer get it. I have tried countless different apricot jams from cheap to expensive trying to find one as good. The best is Sainsbury’s- it’s one of my go to comfort foods.

Bon Maman do a good apricot jam with pieces of apricot discernible in it.

I used to buy and love a large box of liquorice £5. It contained pipes, catherine wheels and lots of other things. they were loose in the box. I have recently found similar boxes in a couple of garden centres for £8. No liquorice pipes and each item was wrapped seperately in a plastic bag. That's what we were paying for, the unnecessary plastic bags. Where oh where have the original make gone? Maybe Bassetts).

Ooh, you have got my taste buds whirring.

If these things were so popular, why did they discontinue them?

My aunt worked in the Gray Dunn bakery ,I think it was in Townhead..I was only young.
Another Aunt worked in Beatties Bakery in Great Western Road
We never ran out of biscuits…lol

Yes, Panyan.

I think Lange du chat biscuits, which we buy in France, are the same as Barmouth biscuits, albeit a different shape.

We had something very similar but called it wine cake, multicoloured slices that were soggy with a boozy flavour.

Ah, I don't remember them - but I definitely want some now you've described them grin.

Haha, they were really delicious.
Sounds the same thing Fallingstar tho wine cakes sounds a bit more posh.

From time to time I do get a bit of a craving for Heinz Toast Toppers, in particular the bacon and mushroom one.

when I worked for a year in Stockport, we would attend the corner shop opposite, oven bottoms delivered every morning, called muffins, she would slice, butter, slices (chunks) of Cheshire cheese and finely sliced apple, O I so want one now - I have never ever been able to replicate that wonderful crunch, taste, so long ago but never forgotten, (50 years!)

Sorry not as good as Koo and Sainsbury’s Conserve is better - imo of course

About 70 years ago Cadbury used to do a chocolate bar which was actually 6 (I think) Filled chocolates. I remember Strawberry Cream, Marzipan, Coffee Cream, Orange Cream, and some sort of nut. I used to have one as a treat when we were on holiday, but they disappeared many years ago.
