When I moved to my present home, a bungalow' I got quite expensive light carpeting right through. However because the pile is deeper than I realised, I've tried different stick vacuums (I can't really manage a cylinder type, most are too heavy for me) and they don't seem to have enough suction.
Can anyone recommend a lightish weight one with really good suction?

I have a Henry Quick stick cleaner. Does a good job on my light coloured carpets.

Thanks will have a look

Have you tried a GTech AirRam? They are cordless and very light. I find ours is certainly powerful enough, but don't have very deep pile carpets. I have the K9 version.

I've just bought a Miele Triflex HX1 and I'm well impressed. 3 suction levels and, when using the lowest level, the battery will last an hour. I only used level 3 once and I struggled to get it to release the carpet! It's lighter than my old Dyson and it comes apart much easier if you want to use the handheld bit to clean the car.
Not the cheapest but by far better than either my previous Dyson or Shark.

I like my shark that bends in the middle. Find it powerful enough

Another vote for Shark. It empties itself, has 3 power levels, is light, bends in the middle to get under furniture and deals well with cat fur. It breaks down to give a hand held which is great for cleaning cars, stairs and cobwebs.

Some are much heavier than I expected.
I did look at these last year.
Some aren't so comfortable in your hand.
I'm still looking.

Another Shark fan here, we’ve got the model that empties itself when docked.

Definitely a SHARK.A bit pricier but are gauranteed a long time.theres a sale now i think on their website, and if you sign up to their website emails you ussually get a big chunk off in offer codes.(can always cancel continuing emails later)grin when i got a shark vac i couldnt believe how much extra dirt came up after we'd already vacced with a not very old hoover vac.

Another vote for gtech air ram here. Just replaced one of the original models 20+ years old with air ram 3 plus. They are very light, very manoeuverable with good edge cleaning and on special offer from gtech at the moment. Also it is a British company!

I needed something lightweight and bought a Hoover HF1 anti-hair wrap stick. Absolutely perfect! It has a turbo setting for those pesky bits of fluff etc that cling to carpets like grim death! It’s easy to empty, too.

What does possess people who choose a light coloured carpet? You're GOING to tread on it, spill things occasionally...

I love my Dyson. We have a dog, 2 cats and large light coloured rugs. Our motel vacuum doesn’t get the hair up from the pile as well as the Dyson stick V15. Best vacuum I have owned for a deep clean.

That was meant to say Miele not motel!!

Bosch every time, even has a light on it and stick bends for under low furniture

mokryna Sat 25-Apr-26 16:12:14

I can only use a turbo head vacuum cleaner, if there isn’t this, the suction needed to clean the carpets hurts my back

I am interested in the answers as I already have a Shark but it won't stand up on its own and doesn't seem to pick up on the return

Does it not fold over?

If you decide on a GTech, their Customer Service is superb, I bought one that was an upgrade on my old one as it was beginning to fall apart, I bought the white one and due to arthritis in my wrists I found it very unbalanced and difficult to mnage, after 2 months I reviewed it and the following day they phoned me and asked if I would like to exchange it for something else. I have gone back to the latest version of the green and black one which is very good. It's a K9 stick vacuum which copes with my long haired black cats hair with no problem at all.

Halo vacuum cleaner after being a Dyson fan for years. Absolutely brilliant although has bags, but no dirty emptying/cleaning of cylinder. Battery operated and can be left on charge when not in use. My techy son put me on to this make. Took a while to arrive, but worth the wait.

Grandma600 Sat 25-Apr-26 17:55:23

Watching with interest as my Shark has been a big disappointment, not picking up much of the fluff/cotton that seems determined to embed itself in my not-deep-pile carpet

JoeyJo Sat 25-Apr-26 18:30:57

I have a gtech airram which is easy as it's light and on the floor and picks up brilliantly and also a shark bend in the middle which has attachments so you can do sofas and stairs and that picks up really well. Both are cordless and easy to use and I use an elbow crutch as well so I'm not exactly fit.

Anything but a Dyson V10 - worst vac we ever had.
