I’m doing a presentation on the 1960s and thought I’d start it off with a typical piece of music.
As the talk is of life in England - our experiences and recollections, I’d like to be a British group or singer.
Thank you

Too many to mention but anything, Stylistics, Beachboys, Elvis, Moody Blues. A wonderful era.

Nights in White Satin - it was "our tune" and I cannot bear to listen to it now he is gone.

We danced to the Moody Blues playing this live in the university union - happy days .........

Wonderful thread... reminds me of so many happy times. Such a fantastic decade to be a student and nearly every song mentioned brings back memories. Smiling and crying here at the same time! Beatles 'Yesterday' and Procul Harem 'Whiter Shade of Pale' (already mentioned) are 2 of my faves but there are just too many to choose from.

What a lovely trip down memory lane
A reminder of some I had forgotten

Old you start with something from 1960 and end your presentation with a song from 1969?
Cliff Richard and the Shadows ( Living Doll or Apache were hits in 1960) and The Beatles ( Get Back or Here Comes the Sun both hits in 1969)

Beatles when it reached the Hippy era, Lennon/Yoko: all the anti war stuff: earlier, Dusty Springfield, (my Dad had a not so secret crush) the Doors...

I cant remember what we danced to at School discos, because I went to a folk club each week from the age of 16, it was in Hull where The Watersons were big and loved them.

Sorry a lot of the soundscape was from the USA: Beach boys endlessly: Joan Baez: lets do the twist, the Supremes

I guess I was a bit younger so it was the early 70's when I was really listening to a lot of pop, as I played in a youth orchestra and listened to classical music with my Dad and at school, and sung in the school choir, that was as important to me.

The first ones that sprang to my mind were the Kinks - Denmark Street, Lazing on a Sunny Afternoon, Followed of Fashion - any of them really.

But then I remembered "I feel free" by Cream. Brilliant!

There are a lot of wonderful songs here. I could not pick out just one of them.

Waterloo Sunset by the Kinks sums up the sixties for me. London was the place to be but it could be lonely too as the lyrics show.

Poppyred Sat 16-May-26 21:50:47

tanith

Marvin Gaye "Heard it through the Grapevine"
Beatles "Hey Jude"
BeachBoys "Good Vibrations"
Animals "House of the Rising Sun"
Otis Redding " Dock of the Bay"

Too many to mention it was truly a wonderful era for outstanding music.

Agree! What a lovely innocent time, with many other songs from the late 60s. Would love to go back there, knowing what I know now. 🤭😉🤣

What’s New Pussycat, Tom Jones, 1965.

My dad sang it to me as a very young toddler. One of my few (good) memories of him.

Very much a song of its time.

“Young Girl” by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap.

Ok, not considered PC nowadays, but we all loved it back then.
