I saw my daughter today and she mentioned she'd never been to the Channel Islands and how beautiful they look. I've been to Jersey but a lifetime ago so I'm thinking of suggesting we go next year.
So looking for the best place to stay in a small but nice hotel with meals near a beach and nice walks. Also good places to visit and best way to get around ,I can drive so is renting a car a good idea? I think flying is the best option and is it easy to visit Guernsey etc?

tanith I started a thread about Jersey a few weeks back, lots of info for you.

There is enough to sustain you on Jersey for a week, no need to go island hopping.

We're off to Guernsey tomorrow!
The Somerville Hotel in St Aubin was lovely when we stayed in Jersey last year.

We have been looking to go to the Channel Islands this year but are amazed at the high prices. We have been many times in the past but prices have rocketed.
We love both Guernsey and Jersey equally. However you don’t really need a car on Guernsey as there is an excellent bus service. Also many roads are very narrow.
From Guernsey it is easy to pop to other islands which are close such as Herm which has no cars and is like a tropical island on a sunny day.
Jersey is a bit livelier if that’s what you want and is also beautiful.
I read this week that in Guernsey you have to pay for medical treatment so you would need to check that.
I also find some of the Channel Islands websites a bit confusing. Make sure you find out, when booking somewhere, if the price quoted is for one or two people as it can be misleading.
Having said all that, I’d highly recommend the Channel Islands. The scenery is beautiful and there are lots of good walks. It’s also a slower pace of life. Have a wonderful time if you do go.

Alderney is a very unusual island, easily accessible from Southampton airport. Highly recommended.

Guernsey is a good base because from there you have the beautiful islands of Herm and Sark to visit.

We had a very nice time in Guernsey although the extreme heat did limit us. We only had a week so plenty to do there without going to the other islands. It's very pretty and the houses are gorgeous. The most striking thing for us was how nice people are. Really old fashioned polite and helpful. One occasion while waiting for a bus on a hot day a lady brought us out chairs and glasses of water! Simply wouldn't happen here. Drivers seem considerate of each other and, if they saw us waiting to cross a road, would stop and let us cross.
I suppose it really is like the old days.

I’m off to Alderney soon. It’s a lovely place to go and so peaceful.

ronib Thu 25-Jun-26 07:30:48

There used to be a great shoe shop and jewellery shop well worth a visit on Alderney.

I am a channel Islander and therefore biased in my opinions.
I’d suggest the evie car hire is best if you are comfortable using tech, definitely most affordable. If not plenty of others available. Taking a trip to Guernsey is great with Islands Unlimited on the San Pawl.
Alderney is the jewel in the crown of the isles in my opinion however a marmite island. I’ve known people to step foot and instantly get a feeling one way or another.

There is a reciprocal medical agreement between Guernsey and the UK in place nowadays, it was the case for a while that you definitely did need insurance though.

The tourist information office in St Peter port. Was laughably useless. We had to pass on info to them that we found on Google.
The bus stops are not easy to spot at first as there are no actual stops visible. Just BUS written on the road.

Definitely stay at the Greenhills Country Hotel if you have a car. St Aubin's is your place for a near the beach up market guest house, the Panorama or Port Hole suites. Parking can be a bit of a problem there. Somerville Hotel is also excellent at St Aubin. You could also try Freedom Holidays Ltd
They have some cracking cottages and places to rent, or Jersey Heritage and Jersey National Trust properties but you would have to self cater or use the excellent eateries. Visit Jersey is the local tourism website. My grandfather came from Jersey so I know it well.

Well….. yesterday my DH came in from visiting his DM, he doesn’t drive, but takes bus as too far to walk, anyway he gets the bus from from outside a small bus station and yesterday a member of bus staff boarded the bus and gave out (free of charge) small cold bottles of water and ice-lollies! He was amazed and most gratefully accepted the water (he loves ice-lollies but felt they would have instantly melted)

We're planning to go back to the Somerville hotel in St Aubin (Jersey) next year. We really liked it last year.

This is a lovely walk around St Aubin featuring the Somerville Hotel and explaining some of the village features.

Thanks. Will check that out.

What a lovely thread. I am sitting with a cup of tea and imagining the lanes, the views and the kindly people.

In my imagination I see Miss Marple on holiday there.
PS I love Miss Marple.

Aveline Sun 28-Jun-26 16:11:02

Miss Marple would be very happy in Guernsey but might miss the crime!

We arrived in Jersey late last night after cancelled flight and delayed rebooked flight. DH's suitcase with all his stroke equipment, clothes, toiletries, shoes etc has gone missing. My email has stopped working, and there is no aircon in the hotel, in desperation tried sleeping on wet towels to survive, only to find in the morning it looked as though we had wet the bed!

But this is our first holiday since his stroke 16 months ago, and we are determined to enjoy it somehow! Lovely sea view from the bedroom window, and we are off to the Jersey War Tunnels and the Gunsite Cafe for lunch tomorrow!

Sago Sun 28-Jun-26 17:02:35

B9exchange What an awful start to your holiday.

I hope things get better.

HelterSkelter1 Sun 28-Jun-26 17:04:14

B9exchange I do hope you get the cooler breezy weather we have today and that the missing suitcase turns up. Wishing you a lovely holiday. Well deserved no doubt.
