Petition to stop the EARLY RELEASE for PC Harpers killers

(170 Posts)

I think it utterly disgusting that PC Harpers ‘grinning’ killers are being released early after only 6 years.
The graphic details of his death are too harrowing to post on here.
The newly married pc had his whole life to look forward to, but thanks to these monsters he was dragged to his death.
There is a petition which you can sign & donate.
These men should have been given life in my opinion, without parole.

Tuliptree

There’s no such thing as karma.

Oh yes there is! Very definitely.

Tuliptree Fri 07-Aug-26 17:44:43

There really isn’t. Good things happen to both good and bad people. Bad things happen to both bad and good people. Some people apparently reap what they have sown, some people reap what others have sown and many work hard sowing and reap nothing. Believing in karma is just a coping strategy or an excuse to do nothing

Thanks for the link to the petition. If the rule of law has to be followed, then I would like a petition that demands a full and comprehensive evidenced report on their supposed rehabilitation. Their obscene, mocking and arrogant faces, and behaviour didn't give me much hope of showing an ounce of remorse. Those images are uppermost in my mind.

Tuliptree Fri 07-Aug-26 18:08:11

Is anyone saying they’ve been rehabilitated? It’s not a condition of release for this scheme is if?

Plevey08 Fri 07-Aug-26 18:31:39

Well I certainly hope that plays a part in an early release wouldn't you? I wonder if you are a little bogged down with statistics and the rule of the law. I know you now might give all the reasons why the rule of law must be obeyed and I agree. So that is why we should demand evidence of rehabilitation success. Sadly it only comes out with reoffending stats. Way too late... perhaps we should be asking different questions.

Tuliptree Fri 07-Aug-26 18:43:11

All I’m saying is what the situation is not what it should be so don’t be so sarcastic. I’m not an apologist for the current scheme in any way, shape or form but I do know the facts and the legal position and don’t let emotion get in the way. What I do know for a fact is that if the so called party of law and order had taken the CJS seriously, we wouldn’t be in this situation now re early release. Btw, when people are released under the ‘normal’ early release scheme ( after two thirds served) there’s no requirement to be rehabilitated.

Plevey08 Fri 07-Aug-26 18:58:00

As this is an extra early release scheme we should be demanding it be evidenced based.
In the meantime there is always Karma "What goes around comes around"

Tuliptree Fri 07-Aug-26 19:15:57

Oh no it doesn’t 😂

Meanwhile... the petition has over 702,000 signatures now.

Plevey08 Fri 07-Aug-26 19:31:36

Well some people believe there is. It is seen and recognised in many human life cycles. It is deeply steeped in many religious groups and other traditions. Which IMO should be respected. And of course this is an emotional topic.,.as humans we have multiple facets to our personalities and characters. Thank goodness we, mostly, do.

Tuliptree Fri 07-Aug-26 19:50:39

Religions believe in all sorts of things - it docsn’t make them true - they are just beliefs. As for Karma, if someone is diagnosed with terminal cancer, did they deserve it? If someone’s cancer is diagnosed early did they deserve that too?

Plevey08 Fri 07-Aug-26 20:01:27

Great to see so many signatures on the petition V3ra 😊

Plevey08 Fri 07-Aug-26 20:22:04

No they didn't deserve it Tuliptree. My eldest son didn't deserve to be born with an extremely rare untreatable syndrome. Nobody does. There are misconceptions about Karma. I like one from Buddhism... It's not a system of cosmic punishment or reward handed down by a deity but rather an impersonal law similar to gravity.

Tuliptree Fri 07-Aug-26 20:25:15

Just picking and choosing from a variety of possible meanings of Karma is really a bit of a nonsense . An impersonal law which sorts out injustices in the CJS? Really?

This was a horrendous murder; they knew full well what they were doing or party to and their original sentences were far too lenient.
They were contemptuous of the court too.

eazybee Sat 08-Aug-26 08:35:12

Bowers and Coles' contemptuous and contemptible attitude during their arrest, trial and subsequent imprisonment has provoked the outrage many feel at the prospect of their early release, and a genuine concern that they are dangerous and a threat to the public.
This is what the government needs to consider, and Burnham needs to get back to work, here, now with his cabinet to deal with this problem, which is now his.
I have no idea about karma but I do think, 'whatever a man sows, that he shall reap.'

Plevey08 Sat 08-Aug-26 09:05:00

That is it in a nutshell essybee. I would take great satisfaction in seeing their smug m

Plevey08 Sat 08-Aug-26 09:06:53

Oops! In the snugness wiped off their faces at being told they won't be released early

Shel1951 Sat 08-Aug-26 09:12:00

Personally I think all manslaughter offences should serve their full sentence

Tuliptree Sat 08-Aug-26 09:20:47

I don’t doubt for one moment that AB is working atm and working on this. He has the responsibility of trying to find a solution that is not just driven by emotion . My guess would be that what the govt want is to be able to take the whole category of manslaughter cases out of the early release scheme. I think that’s about 470. So it’s about finding other groups of prisoners that could be released instead -women, foreign prisoners, IPP prisoners. None of this can be done overnight - and the last 2 categories pose particular problems. But I can’t believe for one minute that AB and his ministers aren’t taking it all extremely seriously.
As for karma, the idea that people reap what they sow, I have just one question - what colour would you like your unicorn to be?

Casdon Sat 08-Aug-26 09:36:29

The government should not make exceptions just because of the attitude of these two men when they were sentenced. Extending the number of prisoners not eligible for early release is a serious consideration, and it will take time to evaluate how the changes can be made so that everybody who has committed similar crimes is punished in the same way. To suggest that the PM should cancel his holiday because of this, when there are no doubt many people who actually have the relevant information and are working through the consequences, is frankly ridiculous.

Tuliptree Sat 08-Aug-26 09:45:01

Well said Casdon. I’d also add that I’m sure he’s working every day on holiday even if not full time.

Plevey08 Sat 08-Aug-26 09:50:00

They could be told it's for their own safety. The condemnation is growing. They'll probably be outraged and start a fight, hopefully with each other (don't know if they are in the same prison) Go back to court for causing disarray and further sentencing. Now that would be karma.
