Our latest Gransnet guest blogger is Amanda from The Women's Room. Her post - What not to wear takes a look at fashion trends best avoided at all costs by those of us who are now a little older and wiser.

Do you agree with her list? And what would you add to it?

Glue?

Annobel Mon 09-Apr-12 10:04:42

I have some Merrills after watching a lady trying on a pair in a shoe shop. She explained they were for her holiday in New York and they are so comfortable you can walk miles and all day in them. Unfortunately she bought the last reduced pair so I had to pay the full price - not cheap, but how much money do we spend on cheaper alternatives that turn out to be not very good, so you try something else etc etc so a false economy? They are very comfortable and look quite trendy in a book clubbish sort of way - you know what I mean!

butternut go for the style that has the strap that can go over the front or around your heel they should then stay on all the time.smile worth while buying the original ones not the copies, expensive but well worth it mine are 6 yrs old now and look as good as new.

'Book clubbish'? Now I'm worried.
glamma and butter, I've managed to get genuine Crocs on Ebay for very reasonable prices. You just have to keep an eye on the bidding and jump in at the last minute unless it goes too high. 'Buy it now' Crocs are rarely a bargain.

Had to be nosy and google 'Merrills' I love them! Really fancy a pair of the barefoot life wonder glove. I've given up on being able to wear anything high as I have all sorts of problems with my feet and balance so these look ideal for me grin

Like the look of these www.merrell.com/UK/en-GB/Product.mvc.aspx/28153W/66644/Aluminum/J89674?dimensions=0

Thank you! Have been trying to find some sandals, this site looks perfect x

SOOP Mon 09-Apr-12 13:11:03

Merrells are so my style. Aluminium, in my size, is out of stock. Good looking shoes. Must be really comfortable. x

gracesmum Mon 09-Apr-12 14:31:51

Book clubbish means looks very comfortable, but edgy at the same time? Like Birkenstocks, or as my book club friend used to say "Those lesbian shoes"grin

Please add long denim skirts to the list - unflattering to all sizes - doesn't hide a thing and looks plain dowdy. I've seen loads of long skirts with heels again not flattering. Jogging bottoms are fine for home or gym but unless you are young and shapely don't wear them out and about. Casual trousers or jeans would be better. Cargo pants are ugly on young people so why do grannys wear them? I know we get to an age when comfort outweighs style sometimes - but we don't have to look a bunch of frights do we?

wiccibat Tue 10-Apr-12 10:33:42

Grannys wear cargo pants to hold all the 'stuff' GCs give them to put in their pockets grin

Oh dear I am a fashion disaster too! I have nearly all the items in my wardrobe and bought a floral print skirt today! I also fail the too much cleavage bit..it is hard as they say wear v necks to make your boobs look less ginormous prominent but then your cleavage is on displayblush
I would simply add that it ought to be law that no outer clothing made of lycra should be made in any size over an 8!!

Has anyone else noticed the Duchess of Cambridge effect on what young women are wearing? In this student area where I live, the ensemble of choice still seems to be skimpy, skimpy but I have noticed a trend towards the use of more fabric among some of the residents. Even more so among television presenters and celebs. Also, has anyone else noticed the spread of the Rebekah Brooks hairstyle?

Anagram Tue 29-May-12 13:28:43

No, can't say I've noticed either effects round here! Rebeka Brooks' hair is just long and curly - it's not so much a style as a natural explosion! grin

kittylester Tue 29-May-12 13:50:54

Our eldest daughter (natural) has Rebekah Brooks type hair but has had it cut to a bob length since someone pointed out the likeness!

I have just seen a woman about my age (sixties) who probably weighs somewhere around 15 stone wearing skin-tight black and white vertically striped leggings (au Marcel Marceau) with the "waist" located just south of her very substantial bosom. I don't know whether to applaud her sheer gall or to be horrified. grin

absentgrana Tue 29-May-12 14:33:40

Mind you, I didn't see her from the rear. grin

Anagram Tue 29-May-12 14:45:21

Bet she hasn't seen herself from the rear, either, absent! grin

FeeTee Tue 29-May-12 15:39:47

nanaej - I flaunt my ample cleavage on the basis that if the eye is drawn to the area it will be distracted from the lumps and bumps elsewhere. My husband who used to work in banking calls this "asset management"

absent - I saw someone at the weekend wearing, well, I am not entirely sure how to describe it but it was essentially very short shorts attached to a billowy boob tube, all in some sort of flowery fabric. The woman was enormous...but seemed so confident in what was (in all honesty) the most frightful and unflattering outfit that I started to wonder if it doesn't actually matter what you look like but how you feel.

nanaej Tue 29-May-12 22:03:58

FeeTee I like your thinking!

I agree about the important thing being how one wink feels about one's appearance, but I shall be glad if the Duchess of Cambridge Effect (or anyone else's) can somehow bring back a little elegance.

I was sitting in Tesco cafe yesterday afternoon having a meeting. It is separate from the store and you can see all the centre users wandering past. Treated to vision of a youngish woman in her dressing gown and tartan pyjama pants having a chat with her friends hmm
