Our latest Gransnet guest blogger is Amanda from The Women's Room. Her post - What not to wear takes a look at fashion trends best avoided at all costs by those of us who are now a little older and wiser.

Do you agree with her list? And what would you add to it?

I wear jeans, trousers all the time. I possess a couple of skirts, one suede from Monsoon, hardly wear them. I loath long denim skirts no one, what ever shape or size looks good in them. I have about four 'posh' dresses bought for all the weddings I went to last year. I have loads of tops and jumpers. Would love to wear heels but my feet are so painful I can't. So it's shoes from Shuh that really look nice and suit my feet. Sandals of course, and Crocs for the garden. Any t-shirt or polo shirts have to fit well and discarded if they get baggy - or relegated to housework/garden wear. Whats a peplum? Hate those blouses with a cardigan or something similar sewn onto them. I live on the coast so we see some sights in the summer. People wear things on the beach that they wouldn't dream of wearing if they had a beach at home. Some swimsuits/bikinis only look good on a young body so please don't assault our eyes if you are neither.

I hate those tops too! I have only bought two, and immediately cut top from cardigan as the fit was awful.

I have a few cardigans with various sleeve lengths, this way I can still wear tops I like with short sleeves, with a cardi on top, and hide my flabby upper arms, I hate them to be on show!

My daughter aged 53 bought me a pair of ribbed warm leggings and a lovely very long stripey top, loose and comfortable. I would never have thought this look would suit me, elderly as I am, but it does. I love it! ps and I wear trainers, have done for many years.

I bought a pair of leggings, because I like the look, but have failed to find a long top which doesn't cling to my bum. Have noticed this effect on several women and do not like it. Must try harder!

I know what you mean, try SimplyBe, or Evans, they have some really nice loose tunic tops.

I always look in Evans sale, even though I'm not really the size they cater for - their clothes are always a bit different from other shops, and I find their size 14 tops ideal as they fit me loosely and are actually long enough!

peaches41 Fri 13-Jul-12 20:21:10

Yes, me too, and their sale goods are really great for bargains!

I agree about Evans' sizes, but there is some nice stuff if you ignore the polyester. I can wear their 14 size tops, but only if I want the flowing effect. 15 or so years ago, when I had reached a size 22, Evans was the only place I could shop, and I still feel quite fond of the brand.

what would I do without flashing my cleavage - fail there . I threw my last gypsy top out last year as it was too small - I've now lost enough weight to wear it, Heels are hell due to arthritis - but I've still a nice pile of them for special occasions - I'm not wearing flats to my daughter's wedding.

I'd agree with the list but what-not-to only goes so far. Can we have What to... please? We fashion-conscious pensioners need to know about affordable, elegant, flattering styles that we can buy on our own High Streets.

Mother's Denim. Not a good look and just no need for it. Invest in some decent jeans ladies.

Ana Fri 28-Sept-12 11:35:36

What's Mother's Denim? confused

Littlenellie Fri 28-Sept-12 14:10:53

anaam being diplomatic here but would guess it one of those awful half elastic acted waist button up front puckered gathered and flared jobbies from ambrose Wilson and damart catalogues that you find in your copy of yours magazine aimed at the middle aged yuk grin sorry if I have insulted your fashion choice anyonexx

annodomini Fri 28-Sept-12 14:31:18

Polyester denim-look?

jeni Fri 28-Sept-12 14:38:55

Nell! How dare you. They're my favourite dresses!

annodomini Fri 28-Sept-12 14:40:56

jeni, you'd be thrown off a cruise ship for wearing them! grin

jeni Fri 28-Sept-12 14:52:35

Not if I'd paid! Reminds me of last Xmas when our table were having so much fun. The old biddy on the next table complained and said 'with your behaviour you'll never be let into the queens grill'
We didn't bother to tell her it was purely a matter of how much you payed as to whether you we're in Britannia princess or queens grill restaurant!

Btw, why do I always seem to end up on the noisiest table?

Bags Fri 28-Sept-12 14:56:46

End up! End up!?

Haha! jeni grin

soop Fri 28-Sept-12 14:58:23

jeni...cos your fun! grin

annodomini Fri 28-Sept-12 15:02:37

You wouldn't be making all the noise, now would you, jeni? wink

jeni Fri 28-Sept-12 15:34:00

Me!? Definitely not! I'm very quiet, reserved and shy!
