Our latest Gransnet guest blogger is Amanda from The Women's Room. Her post - What not to wear takes a look at fashion trends best avoided at all costs by those of us who are now a little older and wiser.

Do you agree with her list? And what would you add to it?

We had to keep our hockey socks up with garters which almost stopped our circulation. I was lucky to be the eldest of three daughters, so my clothes didn't need to be too big for me, only tough enough to be passed down the family. Our blazers were royal blue which faded in the salty sea air to end up sky blue. Mostly they were bought new.

Cleavage? Surely not for wrinklies!!
Along with wrinkly knees a wrinkly cleavage has to be a no no!

grannyinmypocket Fri 15-Jun-12 13:04:32

My cleavage isn't wrinkled, pity about my face!

Gally Fri 15-Jun-12 13:22:18

Mine isn't either, in fact I have taken to wearing more plunging necklines of late - it detracts from what is above the chin grin although I have to agree on the knees and lower legs - shorts only to be worn in the privacy of the back garden!

grannyinmypocket Fri 15-Jun-12 22:28:55

Yes, I'm partial to a plunging neckline, but my knees are definately not gotng on display!

Annobel Fri 15-Jun-12 23:03:35

Cleavage fairly unwrinkled and yes, I do like a plunging neckline. Definitely no knees on view.

Trinny and susannah (remember them ) said that all women over 30 (thats us.... just !) should cover their knees as there were never going to be as good as when we were younger. Mine were never much to write home about before I was 30 !!!!

Check this article out!!

Anagram you have made my day. My knees are nothing like that, I would go as far as to say that my knees are not that bad grin

Annobel Fri 15-Jun-12 23:38:31

There are some very odd knees in that collection. Mine seem quite normal now - it's what's above them that's so gross.

Bags Sat 16-Jun-12 07:56:52

Yes! Bring back knee-covering fashions, I say! Don't they realise?

grannyinmypocket Sat 16-Jun-12 19:17:15

My knees aren't so good but not as bad as some of these, I'm a bit overweight, so maybe the fat's keeping them plumped up a bit

gracesmum Sun 17-Jun-12 11:56:38

I agree with grannyimp about a bit of fat being good against wrinkles. being complimented a little while ago on my skin smile I remember the now-Dowager Duchess of Bedford (ex-model and very glamorous) saying that as you get older you can choose between your face and your behind!!

Knees and hands have always been regarded as the give-aways of age. Some women look as if they are permanently wearing rubber gloves. However, that grotesque gallery of the knees of the rich and famous was wonderfully heartening Anagram. My legs certainly look much better than that but I'll still stick by my decision to abandon short skirts, made when I reached 50.

grannyinmypocket Sun 17-Jun-12 12:15:36

These photos of knees, are all of women who strive to stay thin, if you have loose skin around your knees it's bound to hang there , it's nowhere else to go, or does it eventually end up round your ankles?

absentgrana Sun 17-Jun-12 12:18:34

I didn't now that you could have a knee lift. Whatever next?

crimson Sun 17-Jun-12 12:18:39

I think necks are the big give away.

absentgrana Sun 17-Jun-12 12:26:21

Of course, you can cover up knees and necks, but you can't very well wear gloves all the time.

grannyinmypocket Sun 17-Jun-12 12:32:46

Yes, have to agree with crimson, my neck's awful, and I don't wear polo necks as it's too short, I used to try and keep it straight by keeping my head up, I must have looked like an idiot, so I've gave up, and try not to think about it, as it's just another one of my "things I don't like about my aging body"!

grannyinmypocket Sun 17-Jun-12 12:46:40

If I cover anymore up I'll be going about like a bee-keeper!

nanaej Sun 17-Jun-12 12:48:37

HaHa! looking at those knees on anagrams link has cheered me up! it was a bit weird like saying a word over and over!
But also made me realise you can't hold back time no matter how much time and money you have to 'pamper' yourself!

nelliedeane Sun 17-Jun-12 12:51:34

Re cleavage chest now approaching knees would be hard to tell if baggy knees was in fact my fallen chest....plasters now worn on heels to stop bum rubbing them when I walk....

Anagram Sun 17-Jun-12 12:54:18

absent, Madonna wears gloves nearly all the time, apparently. You very rarely see a photo of her hands, although she seems happy to reveal nearly every other bit of her! grin

soop Sun 17-Jun-12 12:58:12

nellie!
My "chest" when supported, is presentable. wink My knees on the other hand, are best left to wobble under cover. hmm

nelliedeane Sun 17-Jun-12 13:01:35

soop my chest also presentable when supported by my socks grin
