Can I recommend 3 books by Zoe Ferraris which had an quite an impact on me recently. They are brilliant "who dunnits" but more than that, they show the complexities of women's lives in Muslim countries such as Saudi, UAE etc. Set in Jedda the protagonists typify the ambivalent attitudes towards women and the frustrations of an educated woman trying to work in a man's world. The awful plight of immigrant workers who are treated worse than slaves also features in the 3rd book. They are Night of the Mi'raj, City of Veils and * Kingdom of Strangers*. I cannot recommend them too highly!!!

And the Bookseller of Kabul, too, Liminetta. All great books. Is the author Khaled Hosseini?

I have not read anything much since Lesley Blanches' famous book and The Scandalous Woman I think it was called. About an aristocrat who marries a Sheikh in Syria. She starts the first import for
a famous arab stud(Horses)!! Bookshop in Kabul ( been there and bought some post cards)
and The Kite Runner. Not what you all meant but have travelled extensively in Central Asia and the Near East. Know the conditions first hand. Will make a note of recommendations

The Orphan of Islam by Alexander Khan not about women or their treatment but a child deemed too Western Autobiography, very readable and very disturbing

I still haven`t read your recommendations Gracesmum, but I will, promise. At the moment I`m reading The Little Coffee Shop of Kabul, by Deborah Rodriguez, who lived in Afghanistan for a while a few years ago, and I`m quite enjoying it, despite being amazed at all the restrictions put upon women, even in the present day.
