Elizabeth and her German Garden by Elizabeth von Arnim. I love her description of dandelions raising their bright faces to the world in the lawns.

The Sea, The Sea - by Iris Murdoch. Iris Murdoch never puts a foot wrong anyway, but this is my favourite of hers. It's so evocative, mysterious and full of imagery. It explores the complex nature of human relationships set against the backdrop of the tumultuous sea.

Descriptive enough to be poetry but dramatic enough to be oh-so gripping, The Sea, The Sea is an absolute must read.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury (1953). A haunting and disturbing tale of the eliminating of culture, love and meaning in a nuclear universe.

My favourite book is And our faces my heart, brief as photos by John Berger. I first read it about 30 years ago and despite being an avid reader nothing has yet surpassed it.

I never tire of Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd.
Beautifully written it has everything- romance,despair,passion,madness,death and happiness.

My favourite book is 'The Return' by Victoria Hislop a wonderful historical romance but one which taught me a lot about life in Spain during the Civil War and the difficult times the people had to endure there.

I adored the way The Book Thief was written - narrated by death theres no happy ending but death was such a gentle character who came when it was a souls time to be released.

I love 'Mrs P's Journey by S Hartley. Creator of the A-Z, entrepreneur & self-made millionaire, this story tells Phyllis Pearsall's tale with magic, flair & hilarity.

Fitting that into 140 characters was a bit of a challenge!

I loved Anne of Green Gables when I was a lot younger and still like to read it occasionally but in the last year have read I am Pilgrim which is a very good read and worrying.

I've read 3 of Paul O'Grady's autobiographical series, a fascinating story and an extremely evocative social history of Britain. Looking forward to the next one.

It has to be Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen, I retread it every year.

Gone to Earth by Mary Webb. Always makes me cry - the language, the feeling, the evocation of the Shropshire countryside of my childhood.

Career of Evil, kept me guessing till the last

My favourite book is generally the last one I read. I have several favourite authors, and favourite series.

If I have to choose I think I'd say Cross Stitch (and the series) by Diana Gabaldon. Hmmmm, or A Discovery of Witches (and the trilogy) by Deborah Harkness.

One of my favourite books is The Professor's House by Willa Cather. It begins in 'civilisation', a university town but changes to a wonderful description of the landscape of south western America, and the civilisation of the indigenous Indian people on the top of their mesas.

I don't have a favourite book! I have been reading since I was 3 1/2 years old & I'm now in my 80's. I've read so many books that I've loved. Daphne du Maurier, John Grisham,Jeffry Archer. Poetry , Wordworth & Tennyson, always worth re-reading. T.S Elliot "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" "The Snow Goose". The latter few I re-read, but not the novels.My taste is eclectic.

Mine at the moment is Sepulchre by Kate Mosse,I have read it 3 times now,it has a combination of fantasy, action and more importantly history, she is a great author.

my fav was gone with the wind my mom said if you are going to start reading books try a good book first it was about 2.000 pages but l got through it at age 13 and it started me to love books l could read a book a day if it was good love danille steel

A Christmas Carol.
A story that teaches so many valuable lessons and insights to young and old alike.
Definitely not just a book for Christmas!

Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall got me back into reading fiction after a break of many years.
It's like opening a window and peeping in at these people - Henry, Cromwell, Cranmer, Anne, Mary, all people I've known as a famous portrait or a couple of simple facts (fat, crafty, religious, beheaded). Suddenly they come to life, I can almost smell them!
An intoxicating novel, very addictive.

I have so many favourites I couldn't list them all. I;m a massive Terry Pratchett fan but the one I read recently, which was part of the World Book Night 2015 series and would appeal to lots more people, is "Custard Tarts & Broken Hearts" by Mary Gibson (1st novel) and cannot wait to read 2nd book ('Jam & Roses').

My favourite Book is the worlds best seller, The Bible. Most people feel like they have read it but really haven't taken the time. Every time you read it, you will find something different. So why not give it a try today.
