Fifty Books a Year (or fewer)

Here it is then, GN very own 50 books a year thead, or as the title suggest for those who think that may be a tad too many for them, whatever your personal best may be after a culmination of reading for a year. Don't be daunted by the "50" benchmark, as this is the first thread of its kind, it is experimental and will evolve as it progresses.

So to recap, start off with what you are reading now, or with a new book. How often you come to the thread is up to the individual. Over on MN, some seem to up date every so often with the next few they've read. If you feel so inclined post a review or a synopsis of the book. Definitely share if it's something you've loved......or hated, or shelved hmm Reading material is not restricted to fiction, it can be anything, factual, audio, childrens, The Hungry Caterpillar or the like even!, such books count towards the 50, so who knows, you could be at that figure by the end of today grin

At the end of the year post your complete list with your best read in bold, worst in italics and mention your top five, or top book if you've just read five sad

Here's wishing those who partake a great reading year ahead in 2019.

What a great thread!
I’m a Kindle-only reader these days and have the app on my iPad where I can also see at a glance all the books I’ve read. So I hope to keep up with this challenge throughout 2019. I read 37 books in 2018 so must try harder this year.

I’m currently reading a 99p download called Toxic by Vena Cork - it’s not very enjoyable but I can’t put it down. If that makes sense!

Reading Cross and burn by Val mcDermid just now.

I love reading and usually read around 50 books a year.

As a member of NetGalley www.netgalley.co.uk/ I am frequently offered free books to read and review, and have read some fabulous books before they are published.

Am currently reading Tell Me A Secret, by Jane Fallon, and enjoying it immensely.

Have also purchased some books from Smiths, on a Caboodle giftcard, which I won last year. I love reading and always have a book on the go.

I've just finished BlackBerry and Wild Rose by Sonia Belton. A Gransnet book club novel. A lovely story set in 18th century London about Silk weavers. This is Sonia's first book and I am looking forward to reading more from her.
My next book will be The Fox by Frederick Forsyth, a Christmas present.

Moobox how are you getting in with the Essex Serpent? I've just started it.

Saggi Wed 02-Jan-19 14:32:47

Read 110 books in 2018, aiming for 120 this year. 'A Maigret Christmas' contains three stories. An easy start to the New Yeargrin

I've never counted how many books I read a year! Right now I am re-reading all of Dornford Yates and will soon start on Georgette Heyer.

I usually have one book on the go, sometimes two at once, so I imagine I read about 100 a year, as no book has ever taken me a week to read. Perhaps I should try counting.

My DH loves Bill Bryson books and has read several. I've read one or to of his this year, including The Road to Little Dribbling, which is delightful. I have just finished The Man I Think I Know by Mike Gayle which I really enjoyed.

Have just finished Elinor Oliphant ... Not at all what I expected, but a really good read and beautifully written for a debut novel. May try to keep a list on my phone for speed. Will be interesting to know how many I read in a year, IF I remember to record them all.?

My first post on GN.
Started reading A Thousand Roads Home by Carmel Harrington to make a change from my favourite blood and murder detective genre.
I’ve 3/4 finished it already! Lovely gentle book.

Mapleleaf Wonky Donkey is a brilliant book but. The YouTube video of it being read by a Scottish granny is hilarious

I've just finished "Elinor Oliphant is Fine' too. It was reviewed in a glossy mag. as hilarious! The reviewer must have a very strange sense of humour but I agree it is well written.
Now reading 'Dear Mrs Bird'.
Not sure how many I read in a year but I pick up a lot at random from the charity book shelf in the supermarket.

I read 33 books in 2018, I have kept a reading list since 2006 as I forget what I have read and refer to it when searching for new books in charity shops. I have about 100 yet to read but just can't stop buying them! I would say I'm a very slow reader but always have a book on the go and have resisted a Kindle, preferring to actually hold a proper book.
My first book in 2019 is Cold Kill by P J Tracy which is a thriller. It's lovely to read about all your recommendations.

Lottie53 Wed 02-Jan-19 15:45:52

Thank you.

KirbyGirl Wed 02-Jan-19 15:55:59

I started my list in 1984. No comments though.
Now reading The Return of the Native by Thomas Hardy; finished 'Frieda' historical fiction about Frieda von Richthofen who left her children for D.H.Lawrence (except she didn't!). and looking forward to The Hidden Life of Trees which I had for Christmas.

Mostly read about 40 a year but I notice that the year my husband left me, I read 74 and the year after 62. Thank heaven for books and for all the recommendations.

eGJ Wed 02-Jan-19 15:58:10

I had never read
Peter Robinson’s Inspector Banks books before, but already this year I have read the first two Gallows View and A Dedicated Man since yesterday, (two long coach journeys) only 48 to go ?

EllieRose43 Wed 02-Jan-19 16:08:40

I often have 2 books on the go, one I read on my kindle in bed at night - currently The Japanese Lover by Isabel Allende - and one I read when I have time to spare during the day: Wild Swans by Jung Chang at present. I too have been given Michelle Obama's book for Christmas so that's next on my daytime list.

Arto1s Wed 02-Jan-19 16:13:15

“An Almost Perfect Christmas” by Nina Stibbe. A good giggle to start the New Year with. Probably to be followed by “Crazy Rich Asians” by Kevin Kwan.
