Well it was on the BBC and I love children's books!

I was interested to see what this book was all about so took a quick look. Let's be fair, it is a first attempt.

The illustrations are lovely, very soft almost pastel shades, ideal for gentle bedtime reading. Yawn.

The people are a bit thin and wooden and I was disappointed the dogs weren't in the book.

Now for the rhyming. I'm not sure about the cadence, very contrived. Where are all the commas?
I don't know when to breathe.
The script is tiny, I need two pairs of glasses. Actually, come to think of it the print should be far bigger if it is designed for younger children to read

Would you buy it for your grandchildren? Does it resonate and get any message across? £12.99 reduced to £9.99. Is you want it, please hurry it might just sell out.

I am very sorry to have to admit this, but in the cause of common decency I looked up books written by Princess Michael of Kent and the author's name on the front cover is: HRH Princess Michael of Kent.

Still think it is frightfully naff.

Have you read the, eazybee?
Are they any good?

eazybee Thu 06-May-21 18:00:22

No I haven't.
I have a dim recollection that she was accused of plagiarism in one of her historical romances.

I didn’t know she’d written any books eazybee but I guess the point is, did she get paid for her writing or did she donate it all to charity, as royalty normally does?

NotSpaghetti Thu 06-May-21 18:01:52

Mmmn. Interesting... (and naff too!)

Anniebach Thu 06-May-21 18:33:23

I think she has written several books

Can the poor girl do anything right?

eazybee Thu 06-May-21 19:29:36

It doesn't say whether the /any proceeds go to charity; one is entitled Royal Romances with a photograph of the Dule and Duchess of Windsor on the front. I wonder if she is composing a sequel?

I expect HRH Princess Michael of Kent is profiting from sales as I think they are "hard up".
I know they have to pay a lot of rent for example! (£120000 a year?)...

grin

We are talking about HRH Princess Michael of Kent now! grin

Anniebach Thu 06-May-21 20:05:06

I doubt they are written for charity , the Kent’s do not receive
public funding, I did read in the press the Queen pays their rent from her personal piggy bank.

There is a bond between the Queen and the Kent’s, as there was with her father and the Kent’s,their father died when the Kent children were babies , their mother Princess Marina .

In the world of literature, isn't it more commendable for an author to write about topics they truly believe in, such as in the case of HRH Princess Michael of Kent - conservation, endangered species, kings and queens in history etc. I believe she also did lectures on the subjects. To me it shows far greater maturity than a celebrity writing a few pages of drivel in a children's book.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that writing a children's book is a simple task, as JK Rowling admits. It just seems that several celebrities choose this easier option, which demands far less literary skill, just to make a fast buck or to further their image.

Seek out the smelling salts, folks. Fergie is writing an historical novel for Mills and Boon, out this August.

Not all by herself though. 'Her Heart For A Compass' will be co-written with Marguerite Kaye who apparently writes 'hot historical romances'

Oooo-er!

Ellianne Fri 07-May-21 00:58:24

Oh dear merlotgran, sounds like it might be auto biographical then!

At £6.99 it's pretty much half the price of The Bench.

Kate’s book ‘Hold Still’ is doing well in best seller list, no publicly as given to Meg’s

Emily49 Fri 07-May-21 09:46:46

I believe their names are Catherine and Meghan

Has what Lin?

Nevermind the names, the discussion is about the contents of the book and its value as a reading tool.
"Hold Still" tells the stories of individuals in the community focusing on their personal trials and tribulations. It is wide reaching. It is humbling.
"The Bench" in comparison is very narrow and centered on one family, even one person.

And in addition, further to what we discussed earlier the proceeds from the sales of Kate's book are going to a mental health charity.

Lin52 Fri 07-May-21 10:05:43

Really, a bad book is a bad book, whoever writes it. Think Sarah Ferguson got the same negative views about her books.

Sorry you’re wrong - their names are Saint and Sinner ?

No, not here. She's the Devil Incarnate, didn't you know?

I did think of saying that Catherine has just tried to draw attention away from Meghan, publishing her book just a couple of days after Meghan. Is there nothing she won't stoop to? Because that's what people would say if it was the other way round.

As for getting their names right, well we mustn't let a little thing like respect get in the way when we're on full "Hate Meghan" mode.

Anniebach Fri 07-May-21 10:14:01

Meg thinks her book will resonate with other families , I can understand the bond between father and child, will her book
resonate with many one parent families

and what is important for a child is an extended family, Archie is only in contact with one grandmother, no grandfather, uncles, aunts, cousins.
