Anyone reading Richard Osman's books have a tissue ready for page 80 when reading the 4th one. It's not a spoiler alert . But I am floods here ..😢

pamdixon Tue 30-Jan-24 15:29:33

I've not read the latest book yet - waiting for it to come out in paper-back, but I loved the others. I think Richard Ossman writes well and good for him having all his books in the best seller lists for so long is all I can say!!

I certainly would not call the books drivel, but I would suggest that it's written in a very simple basic style, more suited for children than adults.
( I'm referring to 'it' becasue I've only read the first bok._)

I’ve really enjoyed them all and controversial maybe but preferred them to the Marlow Murder ClubšŸ˜‰They are lightweight but sometimes lightweight is what you need.

Totally agree Susan

Agree, seems some posters expect War And Peace tho.

Suzieque66 Tue 30-Jan-24 15:53:55

Not my sort of book at all ...

Hels001 Tue 30-Jan-24 16:26:36

I'm on the third book and so far enjoying it as much as the previous two can't wait to start number 4!

Optomistic1 Tue 30-Jan-24 18:02:18

I love all of these books and very unusually for me have read them all 3 times - each time I find something new in them!
The only other book I have read loads in Kane and Able by Jeffrey Archer that can make me cry every time I read it.

What are the strike books please?

Bazza Tue 30-Jan-24 18:52:45

Anyone who thinks that celebrities can’t write, try a Graham Norton novel. I think he’s written about four, I’ve read two so far and thought they were both excellent.

Tenko Tue 30-Jan-24 21:22:04

I’ve read the first three books and waiting for my daughter to pass on the fourth . I’ve enjoyed them , easy reading and I like the main characters.
I’m surprised that the books haven’t been turned into a TV series . I imagine Julie waters as Joyce and Celia Imri as Elizabeth. I did think Dennis Waterman could play Ron but he’s dead now.
I also like the Strike books but they’re a different animal , gritty and dark .

Yes, they are very enjoyable!

I must admit I like them, but haven't read the fourth. I'll wait until the price drops a bit.

Now you've got me thinking about the cast. A TV series would have been good but I think Spielberg has bought the film rights. I do hope it isn't Americanised as it could lose its quirkiness.

Optomistic1 a series of books written by Robert Galbraith, aka J K Rowling, featured a detective called Cormoran Strike, some have been adapted for TV.

Enjoyed the first three, the forth I really didn't get into,

Primrose53 Fri 23-Feb-24 09:03:57

I am three quarters way through what I think is the first one. It’s just called The Thursday Murder Club. It came in a big load of books from my SIL who passed away in 2021.

As usual, the blurb and comments inside the cover lead me to expect it’s brilliant but it isn’t. It’s far too slow moving. A few bits I found funny but he’s not an author I would look out for again.

Aveline Fri 23-Feb-24 09:27:20

There are so many good writers out there who can't cash in on Osman's TV celebrity. One example is Caron Allan. Her Dotty Manderson series set in the 30s is just so good. It's very well written and researched. Yet she doesn't have his profile and publishing company putting millions into publicising his books.

Calendargirl Fri 23-Feb-24 13:04:42

Have not read the Marlow Murder Club books but think this is soon to be shown on either channel 4 or 5, or maybe Drama. Starring Samantha Bond.

Have just got the latest Thursday Murder Club one from the library. Will probably have to start reading it straightaway as there is a waiting list and won’t be able to renew it. So hope it’s a good read, but am not holding my breath, as the others have only been so-so for me.

Lovetopaint037 Mon 26-Feb-24 09:28:04

Reading the last book I really would have welcomed a list of characters to remind me about the relationships of the various characters attached to the main group.

I agree. To me, though, that proves that the characters aren’t particularly memorable, or that frankly, I’m not that interested in any of them much.

I try, but just don’t ā€˜warm’ to them.

Enjoyed the first one, but the second one just didn't catch my imagination so gave up.

I gave up on the first one very quickly as it was so dull, unlike The Marlow Murder Club by Robert Thorogood which I thought was highly entertaining.

Have downloaded it on Audible on your recommendation, NotAGran55. No pressure!

But seriously, thank you

And it has a TV series with Samantha Bond starting Wednesday week. I'd better get 'reading'.

NotAGran55 Mon 26-Feb-24 17:13:31

I hope you enjoy it Chardy. Please let me know.

I loved the narration, know Marlow very well as I visit a couple of times a month, and could visualise all their antics!

I’m not sure about watching the TV show šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø.

Have seen that filming has either started or soon due to start on ā€˜The Thursday Murder Club’.

Starring Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan and Ben Kingsley.

Whiff Mon 29-Apr-24 08:46:20

Not started filming yet they haven't cast actress for Joyce yet. Helen Mirren as Elizabeth ,Ben Kingsley as Ifraim ( sorry not spelt correctly) which fits but Pierce Brosnan as Ron no. Ray Winston would make a great Ron. Think Penelope Wilton would be good as Joyce.

Calendargirl Mon 29-Apr-24 09:20:24

Whiff

Agree with your choice of Penelope Wilton for Joyce, also think that Pierce Brosnan wrong choice for Ron, but no doubt intended to appeal to the viewing public.
