When do you read?

As in, what time of day, or when you are doing other things?

I used to read a lot. I always had a book on the go - sometimes two - but these days I struggle to finish one. I read poetry (but even then, not as much as I used to), but can’t seem to concentrate on a novel. I’ve tried audiobooks, but my mind wanders when I listen, and I often find the narrators irritating.

I used to read on the bus on my way to work and back, but I don’t do that anymore, so I lost both the routine and the 90 mins or so a day. I’m not a fan of reading in bed, but maybe I should start forcing myself to make that a routine.

I know I would enjoy it if I could get back into the swing of it. I miss reading.

Has anyone else ever lost their reading mojo, and if so, how did you get it back, please? Or for those who do read regularly, when do you do it?

I have zero guilt about doing whatever I want to do, so it's not that in my case grin.

I like the idea of returning to a favourite book. There are so many on Kindle that I need to have a good look and see what I have. The new one arrived set up and ready synched, which was great - it was even connected to the wifi.

Is there a way of deleting ones you don't want on there? It could do with being thinned out.

I believe you can organise them into folders - I did that with my very first keyboard one ages ago, but haven't since. I'll look online later to see how to do it. With luck, finding ones I'd forgotten were there will inspire me. I might set up a 'to read now' folder, or is that procrastination? wink

As a lifelong avid reader I still read in bed every night.
Anything from half an hour to an hour, or sometimes more if
the book is brilliant.
And I often have a read at lunchtime, when I finish my chores and sit down to have a sandwich or something.
In nice weather I sometimes take a picnic and a book to the moors, or to a beach, and sit reading in my car, after a walk.
I can't exist happily without reading. And it's mostly a mix of library books and my Kindle.

I read in bed every night and if it's weather for sitting outside, I read then too but that's the only time I read during the day.

I don't work anymore so I read whenever I feel like it. A few pages during meal times, listening to audiobooks while doing housework, before bed - or I just sit down for half an hour any time of the day, really. I never had a reading routine, but like you, I used to read a lot during work commute. I usually have more than one book on the go, say, one fiction, one non fiction, one audiobook, and I pick up the one that fits my mood and concentration level the best. If a book doesn't keep me engaged, I won't finish it.

I'm retired and one of the joys of that is if it's rainy & I have a quiet day, I can walk the dog & then come back & curl up with a book.

It is my best way of de-stressing so often if I have a problematic DIY job on the go (& most are problematic for me), I'll do some & then reward myself with a chapter of a book, then do a bit more.

& I read before going to sleep unless I'm exhausted.

After a sudden bereavement I did lose my reading mojo, couldn't concentrate, but happily it soon returned.

It turns out it's easy to organise on the computer. You can delete too (which I don't think used to be possible), and even move books from one Kindle to another.

I've got rid of a few duds, and will organise the others at some point. I still have more than 400 on there - it's amazing how all the free and 99p ones add up, plus the ones I've bought over the last century or so grin.

I have a few thrillers/detective stories on there, and I enjoy that sort of thing, so will start with one of those I think. Thank you all for your suggestions and contributions.

I’m new here, so thought I’d say hi and join this discussion.

I absolutely love reading, and read every night in bed for around an hour. I use my kindle because I find holding physical books quite difficult these days because of arthritis in the hands, but love to own physical books too.

I can’t even imagine my life without something to read.

Usually in bed before I go to sleep but also in the day when I can . On the days I don’t work with my lunch . Read a lot more on holiday. Can’t stand audio books has to be the real thing. Also subscribe to a weekly and monthly magazine .

Hello and welcome, Lesleym57.

Kindles are marvellous things, aren't they? I had a keyboard one when they very first came out, and have never looked back. I'm loving the new one, which I got because I can read it in the bath. I got a wireless charger for it, which doubles as a stand, so I can read it when knitting, although turning the page will be annoying - I'm a fast reader.

They are marvellous. Mine is quite old but it does the job.

After lunch I complete the Times Codeword puzzle then read for about 15 minutes. I always read in bed to relax me ready for sleep.
But if I have one of those books that I can’t put down I read at mealtimes and any other time I’m not busy.
If I don’t have a book to read I panic!

I read the paper every day. I have to be complete silence to read a book and as we have only one sitting room and I'm not keen on most tv programmes I leave that room for my husband and who loves tv and go to bed early and read until I settle down.

I read on my laptop, after walking dog mid-day.

The Economist and The NYT.

If newspaper is in from work, I read after dinner dog walk.

Always in bed as well as frequently during the afternoon. But like others - as a child I used to get totally and absolutely engrossed in a book. I wish I still had that ability.

Rocketstop2 Thu 02-Apr-26 13:29:25

I read a lot of books in a year but mainly read at night in bed.I do like to read a bit at breakfast and lunchtime but that's usually only to get to the end of a chapter.

If I can't sleep I will read for a long time.

Daffonanna Thu 02-Apr-26 14:55:42

I've always been an early riser , now enthusiastically encouraged by the dog .
I go back and read in bed watching the sun come up , its the best part of the day ! With the kindle I can read in the dark without disturbing DH.

I too have lost my reading mojo. Easily distracted and start thinking of other things. Ive bought several interest books recently but they seem to be gathering dust also.
Ive recently signed up with Audible so when Im crafting, I can listen. But thats taking some getting used to, being read to in a voice that’s not your own!

Quaver22 Thu 02-Apr-26 15:18:13

My favourite place to read is in a coffee shop. There are no distractions and I don’t feel guilty about household chores I should be doing. I also enjoy reading in bed for half an hour before I go to sleep.

GrandmaC47 Thu 02-Apr-26 15:20:40

I read a lot. Whenever I sit down I pick up my iPad and access the Kindle app. I currently have 600 + on my kindle app. I culled about 400 before I realised I could remove the download but keep the details in case I wanted to reread anything.
Wish I could just sit 😀 and relax. I’ll read anything ( even the sauce bottle label).

AuntieE Thu 02-Apr-26 15:29:46

anything and everything!
No seriously, fiction, old and tried favourites, Donford Yates, Georgette Heyer, Norah Lofts, Dorothy L. Sayers, Agatha Christie, Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë.

Research in my fields, history, especially from 1500 onwards. The Bible, The German romantic poets (in German) Danish Romantic Literature (in Danish). Shakespeare.

I don't care for modern detective stories, as most are either totally unrealistic, or worse are more interested in the atrocious crimes and the people who commit them than on demonstarting that crime is wrong -which to me should be the focal point of detective stories.

Plus anything that catches my eye when I go to the library.
Ups! forgot Umberto Ecco up to The Prague Cemetary - I can't get on with his more recent works.

Bazza Thu 02-Apr-26 15:30:14

I’ve always been an avid reader and I honestly don’t think I have ever been without a book on the go my whole life since my sister taught me to read when I was three. These days it’s mostly in bed before sleep or in the afternoon if there’s nothing else going on. Books are my absolute joy.

Mopsie Thu 02-Apr-26 15:46:26

I have two on the go at any one time, one audio at bedtime, one physical book. Bought myself a reclining reading chair! I’ll read if I have a quiet afternoon. All very regimented!!

Danma Thu 02-Apr-26 15:47:41

I use a library app on my iPad so if I ‘can’t get into’ a book it’s easy to return it and download another.
All free, which is an extra bonus

NanaCorinne Thu 02-Apr-26 16:27:03

I found that scrolling through social media especially Twitter (before Musk took over) damaged my concentration level. When I cut that down, it came back, so there is hope. I read my Kindle in bed, and a real book in the sitting room. My DH is blind and uses audiobooks which I listen to as well. I read about 9-10 books a month and keep a record in a notebook. I do hope your reading mojo comes back as reading is so good for you.

labazs Thu 02-Apr-26 16:37:55

i like to read during my many hours of insomnia, before bed, during the day often lying down for a rest, i suffer from a lot of pain so depends what sort of day it is. when we go out I take a book with me to read on the journey no matter how long or short. i can often be found stirring the saucepan for tea book in other hand waiting for kettle to boil etc umm i like reading! romance, true animal rescue stories, crime real and fiction
