Borrow box

Several of us on Gransnet use it a lot.
I like it mainly for audiobooks. I can listen to books (including those I might not choose to read) whilst washing up, cleaning, weeding, taking a shower...
I love it.

It doesn't have everything of course and sometimes you have to get in a "queue" for one (as you would if you reserve a book at the real library).

I use it every day I think.
Truly excellent when driving - especially longer distances.

Yes I agree it is pretty easy to navigate. Although they don't carry every title you may want, surprisingly there's a lot on offer including very sought after new books and well known authors, Unlike Audible it's free! For most there's a wait period. I've found anything from imminent up to a few months. Your library will advise you when one of your selection becomes available. You can have up to 10 on reserve.

Lots of magazines, but I don't think they have newspapers.

I use it all the time for audio books and love it. It’s a lovely surprise when a book on reserve becomes available to you.

I’m currently listening to one, have another ready, and one on reserve for another 7 days.

I also use Audible, but always check Borrow Box first for the freebie.
I also used to use Libby which had a different selection, but my library stopped it for some reason.

I used to use "Libby" too - but Borrowbox is an easier interface I think.

Use borrowbox all the time. My dd local authority have more books and audiobooks available than my authority. Mine also has newspapers available but dd doesnt.

I think my county library must have been one of the first to get Borrowbox, around 2012 when it was first launched in the UK. I can remember going to the launch party. It’s an Australian company and many of the early books available had Australian narrators.

The number of books on offer has grown but it still can’t compete with Audible for the sheer number of titles available.

I use it as a supplement to my Audible subscription. If there’s a particular book I want, I check first to see if it’s available free on Borrowbox rather than use an Audible credit to buy it.

The licence restrictions on Borrowbox are irritating meaning that there’s sometime a long wait for a book but I suppose that’s how Borrowbox make their money, by charging per download and libraries have to budget.

I use BorrowBox and Listening Books I only get audiobooks which I listen to through my hearing aids do I can get on and do some gardening, knitting etc.

I use it for audio books. Nothing better than putting my headphones on, feet up and a cuppa on a lazy afternoon.

Yes, I use it every day. Love it. Also, do the daily crossword in the Puzzles section.

Easy to use and if there’s a queue, you reserve the book and then you get a message when it’s available.

Yes, it’s really good. My one tip would be put in the search area the name of a book or an author you’ve enjoyed before, and it will bring up all other works they have on that author.
Also, you can read your favourite magazines and some newspapers. Brilliant.

In what ways is BorrowBox better than Libby?

I got used to Libby, but am finding BorrowBox more difficult to navigate (used purely for magazines as I hate reading books online or listening via audio).

Since I retired and don't need to travel every day, I have stopped listening to audio books (Harriet Walter's interpretation of Middlemarch was terrible) and gone back to reading. Borrowbox doesn't have a huge range, and there are long waiting lists for the popular things. I use it occasionally for newspapers and non-fiction books, but give me a proper book any day!

I think Borrowbox is brilliant and use it for Audiobooks and Ebooks. I can also access a wide selection of newspapers and magazines via PressReader, again accessed via my library card. I really appreciate both Borrowbox and PressReader now that I am less mobile and can't get to.the.library as easily.

I love BorrowBox. I mainly use it for audio books that I listen to on my iPad. They have a large range, you can borrow several at a time and order ones that are currently out of stock. Thoroughly recommend.

I use it all the time for both audio and e books. It's absolutely brilliant and helps keep me sane. There's lots of choice and you can reserve books if they're out on loan.

I’ve used it for several years, mainly to read magazines but occasionally an audio book. I find that I can’t listen to an audiobook and do other things at the same time though. I also paid for Readily for many years and it was brilliant for choice of magazines but over the years the price has gone up and up so I only use it when I can get a couple of months free as I prefer the layout to BorrowBox.
