Advice on adjustable beds please.

Anyone bought an adjustable bed or researched them recently? My husband, who has various health problems, including collapsed vertebrae due to osteoporosis, has been finding his bed uncomfortable and has been sleeping in a recliner. For ages I've been nagging him about getting an adjustable bed as a friend has one and loves it. She bought hers in a local bed shop and it wasn't outrageously expensive. I started to research on line and emailed enquiries to a couple of specialist companies who got back in touch. Unfortunately not all have reps where we live ,Northern Ireland, but one company, Grosvenor Mobility got in touch and today a demonstrater brought a sample bed to try. It was all singing dancing- even has a massage mode, and my husband found it amazingly comfortable. We were however totally shocked by the price - £3,500! That's with some special offer as well. We weren't keen on the salesman/ demonstrater but he insisted he wasn't on commission. I know a high street one would be cheaper but not custom made and my husband did think it was amazing. Anybody any experience of buying one from this company or similar? What do you think? We said that we'd decide by Wednesday. I'd really appreciate some advice based on your experience.

Hi Sloegin
I had a spinal injury 18 years ago and had great trouble sleeping. I invested in an adjustable bed and haven't looked back. I sleep with the top raised slightly on pillow that is longways (rather than across the bed) and also raise the foot to help with draining the fluid from my legs.
My best investment ever!

Thank you mum 54, that's very interesting. Did you buy yours from a specialist company or a normal bed shop? My husband did think that the one he saw yesterday was amazingly comfortable but so expensive. I looked at one in a local shop this morning and it was a brand called Sherborne, made in the UK and half the price. It didn't have a massage mode. £3500 is a lot for a bed!

Not mum,mumu! Sorry, auto correct.

We used an adjustable bed in a holiday flat we used to rent , and loved it, it had dual electric controls fir head and leg/ knee raise, and a wooden slatted base so fairly basic, but perfectly comfortable with the mattress.
Only you can decide what you want to spend on a bed.
Me? I would be happy with the already very expensive Sherborne.

You can bet the salesman who you saw most definitely IS on commission.

I used to sell beds for Adjustamatic and though some of their sales reps were very pushy, so you might not take to them, the beds themselves are absolutely fantastic - and (at least at that time) had a therapeutic massage system built in.

They are expensive, no doubt about it, but I got one for my Dad who had Emphysema and couldn't sleep flat, or get comfortable in a normal bed.

Mum had one too, so that they could both be in a position they individually chose, although it still felt to them like they had a big double bed and could still cuddle, as the beds can be joined together.

The bed was a real boon for Mum several years later when she was dying of cancer and was very weak, as it allowed her to lever herself out on her own, and also get back in and settled on her own.

I just googled them for you, and it seems they still do the massage function - and unless the page I got is out of date, they have a sale on just now.

Have a wee look and see what you think, but I promise you, my parents felt the benefits were worth every penny.

Just had a quick look. Why do these expensive bed companies never put prices on the beds they advertise? Not everyone wants to give their details so a salesman can come with the hard sell.

If you need an adjustable bed for medical reasons, an occupational therapist should be able to get you a hospital bed - my husband has one to help him get in and out by raising/lowering - he has Lewy Body Dementia & can only walk short distances with a frame. It might be worth asking if they do more padded versions more suited to your husband's medical condition.

Thank you Dilemma. I'm afraid he doesn't like hospital beds . He did find this expensive one extremely comfortable and particularly liked the leg position. Strangely they seem to now be willing to reduce the price dramatically which makes me a bit suspicious. I'm trying to persuade him to go for the one in the local shop but it doesn't have the massage mode.

I will answer my own question. Reason why some of these beds don’t advertise a price is so they can start off very high and then reduce it slowly so the customer thinks they are getting a bargain when in fact they probably aren’t.

Mamissimo Tue 14-Dec-21 19:44:28

Hello - please remember that if you need the bed for chronic medical conditions you don't need to pay VAT - there are lots of medical companies selling adjustable beds VAT free. Makes a difference?....ask the rep !

MissAdventure Tue 14-Dec-21 19:48:17

I wouldn't go for the all singing, all dancing type, unless your husband is planning to spend a vast amount of time in it.

I think you just need one with the means to adjust the various parts to suit.

People I have supported at work have all been very happy with the more basic types, and they all have different levels of disability.

We got my mum an adjustable bed.I phoned Age UK for advice and they recommended a company, can’t remember the name but Age UK will be able to tell you.The company came out and the bed was made specifically for mum’s requirements and also her height.Age UK guaranteed the price would be fair and the quote is what would be paid.We paid £1500.

Interestingly I discovered that earlier today when someone rang from the company and, miraculously, after she ' talked to her manager ' the price is down by £1000!

Thank you, that's an excellent idea. I'll call them tomorrow.

Thank you Mamissimo and Miss Adventure for useful advice. We do know about VAT exemption. I think I agree Miss Adventure and, if it were me I'd go for the one in the local shop but he was keen on the massage facility. He does spend a lot of time in bed.

Farmor15 Tue 14-Dec-21 21:39:30

If he really likes the bed demonstrated and you can get the price down more, I'd be inclined to go for it. If you get the other one, he'll probably never be satisfied with it, having tried the one the salesman showed!

MissAdventure Tue 14-Dec-21 21:40:59

That's a good point.
He's had the carrot dangled in front of him now... smile
It's only the cost of a fortnight's holiday..

silverlining48 Tue 14-Dec-21 23:03:02

The ‘chat with the manager’ always brings a miracle reduction, but the deal always needs to be done right away. No thinking time,
Bit like double glazing salesmen uSed to be, or maybe still are.
I hope you find something to suit your dh and the budget Sloegin.

mumu54 Wed 15-Dec-21 11:20:33

Sorry for the tardy reply, unreliable internet!. I bought mine from Dreams bedding, originally went in for a new mattress and they had a special offer on adjustable beds so ended up with both new bed and mattress. It did have a 10 year guarantee which was useful (only used once when we moved house and motor fell off!!).

FannyCornforth Wed 15-Dec-21 11:27:57

I’m in the middle of a search too, for DH and his back.
A firm called Willowbrook have tried to give me the hard sell; along with no ball park price.
They wanted to send their salesperson around straight away, despite me not wanting said salesperson.
There is no way I’ll be giving them my custom.

Wat I would say first is get a Adult Social Care Needs Assessment as they may be able to provide him with a hospital bed?

Whatever, do not go looking at beds in 'mobility/disabled' places as it will cost you the earth! Better to go to a normal bed shop that does them if the OT's can't help .....

MadeInYorkshire Wed 15-Dec-21 11:33:20

PS - I tried a hospital/adjustable bed as I have similar issues, I have spent the last decade sleeping in a riser recliner, much more comfortable!!

Moggycuddler Wed 15-Dec-21 11:36:54

Do watch out for some of the companies who send out reps to demonstrate. They are all on a commision and will try their hardest to sell. Their beds are often very expensive and not always the best for the money. Do shop around.
