Advice on adjustable beds please.

My friend and her husband have many health problems and recently bought a Tempur King size adjustable bed. It is divided into two separate parts so that partners can have different positions. It also has a massage function. It was expensive but, like us, she thinks Tempur memory foam mattresses are by far the best.

We bought my husband an adjustable bed as he has had surgery on his spine. A downside is that we cannot move it or dismantle it as it is too heavy. He also found the mattress to be too hard so I have had to get a topper.
Had he been able to actually sample a bed, he might have made a different decision!

Further to my earlier post, I’ve just had the same response from Grosvenor Mobility; again, they will not be getting my custom.
Thank you to posters who have suggested getting advice from an OT.
Other wise, I’ll go down the Dreams route.

I haven’t got any personal exercise of these beds but I would say with certainty that you could negotiate the price down.
Could your husband go back to the local shop, try the cheaper one there and then compare it with the expensive one.
If the pricier one is definitely more comfy then I would say go for it, as long as the salesman gives you a decent discount.
He must be well aware that £3,500 is a lot of money for a bed, so I’m sure other potential customers would have also struck a hard bargain!

Jennifer I would not want to give a penny of anyone’s money to companies who use such manipulative practices.
Especially when they know that they are so regularly dealing with ill and desperate people who just want a decent and comfortable bed.
Just tell us the price for heaven’s sake!
Personally I’ve got enough to deal with already, without having to put up with desperate salespeople visiting; doing online research and negotiating a hard bargain.

I have an adjustable bed complete with massager. I purchased it from a local independent family store. It is a Hypnos and I have had it for a good few years, Can highly recommend it. Do not buy from these firms sending out representatives, they are just con merchants and only want your money. Do not fall for their "special prices". Just visit your local shop I am sure they can recommend adjustable beds with massager.

Thank you Jennifer Eccles. We did go and look at the bed in the local shop but I'm afraid my husband didn't find it that comfortable. I'm will give an update on negotiations so far.

Thank you all for your helpful replies. Well, here's an update-We had arranged with the demonstrater/salesman who incidentally insisted he wasn't on commission, that he'd phone this morning for our decision as he'd insisted the offer could only be held until today. Meanwhile, yesterday, a woman phoned from Grosvenor beds head office to ask how we felt about the bed after the demonstration. I told her that my husband loved it but just too expensive. She asked how much was my budget and I told her that I had thought the cost would be about £2000. She responded with,' I'll talk to my manager and see what we can do'. Two hours later she phoned back to say that we could have the bed, with a shorter warranty ( only 1 year) for £2,500! That's a dramatic reduction on the original price quoted and £1,000 less than the price the demonstrater had 'negotiated'. Extraordinary. She did also say that we had 60 days to think about it.
This morning the demonstrater phoned, as arranged, and, when I told him about the call from his head office - he seemed very put out. He ended up by saying that, if we decided to go for it would we please order it through him as 'they shouldn't have phoned you up'! I simply said to him that we'd let him know our decision. If we do decide to go for it I've no intention of going through him. I phoned the firm back, spoke to the same woman, and asked her why he'd said that if he wasn't on commission. She eventually admitted that, whilst they're not on commission, they do sometimes get a bonus. Quite honestly if he'd said to me would I mind ordering it through him as he'd get a bonus I'd have understood but, if it weren't for the fact that my husband liked the bed so much, I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole.We went into our local shop today to look at the one there but unfortunately he just didn't find it as comfortable. We live in a very rural area so nearest big bed shops are over an hour away and DH isn't really up to travelling too far. Tomorrow we have someone coming from another company with a demonstration bed so we'll see how we get on with it. I'll let you know!

I do wonder whether the price is negotiable. Perhaps, if you hesitate and say how much you like it - but it's just too expensive - you may find you get a 'special reduction' offer?

If you can afford it, though, getting a good night's sleep is just so important that it'll be a good investment. It's 'lifetime' of ten years or so makes it £350 a year, so not too bad (about what I spend on chocolate).

Phew, decision made. Thanks to suggestion from Poshpaws we had a rep here from Adjustable Bed factory. A nice chap and not at all pushy. Cheaper than Grosvenor and with a better warranty. I did appreciate the helpful suggestions from you all. Thank you.

Interesting that the call from Grosvenor Head Office and the reduced price for the bed with a ne year warranty, sounded identical to the conversation I had with them earlier this year with a riser/recliner chair.

I did tell them that I was now totally confused and asked the question that -if they charged so very much extra for a long guarantee, then were they actually saying that there was a high probability of problems arising with this purchase.

Obviously, they huffed and puffed but it does seem that this is their normal way. , First visit to home, quote ridiculously high price, which gets lowered (on phone call to manager), but only held for a 'limited time'. Then phone call from HO with much lower cost but only one year guarantee.
I detest these sort of sales methods - told them they had most definitely lost my custom due to their price shenanigans. Went to local Careco, and purchased wonderful riser/recliner chair from them.
Be a little wary of massage programmes, a goodly number of medical conditions are not suitable for these. And, most people who purchase a chair or bed, with this, use it when the item is new and this is a novelty and then they hardly ever use it.

I’m pleased you seem to have found a suitable bed from a reputable company.

What should be an enjoyable experience often turns out to be a complete minefield with salesmen chasing their commission with no thought of the poor customer.

The main thing though is to get a bed that your husband will be comfortable in, and your experience and those of others who have posted will build up knowledge for us all!

I do have one, but have no idea what make it is. I do have a huge hiatus hernia so do need to sleep in a raised bed and find it enormously comfortable.

We got an adjustable bed from Sven & Son and it has been amazing. Before we got it I would wake up with the worst back pain ever! We had a cushy mattress that I thought felt amazing when we tried it in the store. But since we got this, I have not had a bad nights sleep yet! I'd definitely check them out! svenandson.com

My investment in a bed with movable parts has paid off handsomely. To put it simply, it has revolutionized my sleep and ease of mind.
