I didn't find him lovely at all.
Still that's just me and it doesn't matter what I thought.
I agree with you. I didn’t think he was a sweet little old man, particularly as in his book he moaned about his wife not liking sex.

The Charity Commission has now found that the charity in Tom Moore's name was mismanaged and was subject to misconduct, with his daughter and her husband personally benefitting from the operation.
So does that mean that Sir Tom obtained his knighthood under false pretences?
What a sordid mess the whole thing is.

Golly Foghorn that is surprising! Haven’t t read the book and can’t believe that a very old man of his generation would be ready to be so open about his personal life. Wonder if someone else planted that in like so many modern biographies who seem to believe sex sells.

Yuck.

I totally agree I didn’t read his book but I did read a bit about his earlier life and wasn’t keen on him and I didn’t get caught up in all the adulation I felt it was all very strange and over the top He was suddenly elevated to a living saint and no Babs I didn’t get swept along at all and no I didn’t give any money to the charity I just didn’t feel comfortable from day 1 but everyone thought it was fantastic so I didn’t say a lot
There must have been more of us than I thought who found the whole episode less than wonderful. I had no desire to upset those who thought he and his family were the best thing since sliced bread, so I kept my thoughts to myself and my mouth shut. I wasn't the least bit surprised to find out his daughter was what she has now been revealed to be. None of it ever sat easily with me, but I thought it was just me.
Totally agree Topgunner
So, it tuns out that nobody liked him that much... all going along with it so as not to offend people who unbeknownst to us, also didn't like him that much either.
Bad taste joke, I know, and mustn't speak ill of the dead, so he was a good walker.
And he raised money...it's more than I did.
how rotten that people are now saying they didn't even like him!
he raised just short of 40 million for the NHS.
His daughter and son in law are the shady ones who have done wrong
I believe a prosecution will now follow!
Perhaps he didn’t write the book,
I donated a small amount because it was for NHS charities and to my mind was doing more good than me standing outside my front door banging a saucepan.
He was the man of the moment and people got caught up in the mood. It was a miserable, anxious time for some and if he brought a little light into their world then good for him.
Like others, I didn’t take to his daughter and thought Michael Ball was just jumping on the bandwagon but the millions were adding up so I’m mightily relieved to hear that whatever fraud has occurred, the NHS hasn’t been dragged into it.
As for his sex life…..I couldn’t care less so long as it didn’t frighten the horses. 😂
It's not necessary to like someone because of their charitable works.
I dislike very much people who seek out the limelight.
Just be quiet and do it is what I think.
Perhaps he was all sweetness and light, though, who knows?

We could all have walked round our gardens 100 times, or more or less according to our age and fitness . It wasn’t a very spectacular thing to do and I wouldn’t have thought knighthood-worthy in itself.
I'm sure I read somewhere that he was walking around his garden anyway as part of a rehabilitation therapy to recover from an injury/operation, and the daughter viewed it as an opportunity to exploit the nations sentiments in very difficult Covid times.
I doubt Captain Tom realised fully what was going on.

I m not so sure I don’t think he was still quite well mentally and I think he was quite an astute man but we ll never know and honestly when they whipped him off to the West Indies ‘on a holiday’ I thought well that’s the end of him, heat, long journey, Covid, great combination at 100 years old
It all seemed a very ‘Alice in wonderland down the rabbit hole’ time that I felt suspicious of from quite early on and didn’t join in the adulation
We ll never know now
Sorry that should read I DO think he was mentally quite well
I expect somebody, somewhere is doing a PhD in this collective madness.
I cannot remember whether I donated or not. Nor was I banging saucepans for the NHS. They were busy trying to kill my daughter by neglect and then tried something similar with my DH. Neither had COVID, although DH was one of the people who volunteered for the COVID trials.
Scruples and honesty fly out of the window where money is concerned. Such a shame this plucky old gentleman's memory has been plundered and tarnished in this way. I think the charities that the book sales were due to benefit from are taking it further. I hope they squeeze his daughter and her husband until the pips squeak and retrieve the money for the purpose it was intended. Oh and leave them with eye-watering legal costs.

Perhaps he didn’t write the book,
That's a thought. You could well be right.

Perhaps he didn’t write the book,
He would have had a ghost writer in any case I would imagine. I can’t see the old buy writing or typing all that. Ghost writer could have been influenced by if it was not actually Hannah. Maybe that’s why she thought all the money from the sales was hers.
He didn't raise a penny for the NHS. The NHS is paid for entirely through our taxes and NI- the NHS itself didn't benefit at all.
When you make a contribution to the NHS it has to be spent on non-statutary 'extras' that benefit staff and patients.
I know the money raised was a real headache for many small hospital charities who struggled with handling such large amounts of money when they were used to scratching around running raffles for toys, TVs etc.
As for Captain Tom and his greedy, fake family I blame the media for picking up this non- story and running with it into some collective frenzy. People, desperate for hope, picked up on it too. It all got completely out of hand.
I was never comfortable with it, gave a small amount to get it out of my head and then sat back and watched the sorry shebang fall apart.
What I want to know is what have the NHS charities done with the money? Do we see any evidence of better staff/patient facilities? I would love to know the answer to this.
I wonder where the money went? Genuinely, at the time I couldn't understand it. Perhaps if we'd seen the Captain Tom Wing/ Ward, it might have made some sense.
Gosh I’ve forgotten, was the whole saucepan banging thing started by Captain Tom. I thought it ok for a one-off when we were all shut off from our neighbours but we didn’t keep it up.
I think the saucepan banging was started by a yoga teacher from the Netherlands!!!
Madness.
I was working through the lockdown, and hated coming home as everyone was banging their saucepans.
I think people "enjoyed" is maybe the wrong word, but appreciated the community spirit at the time.
I went out and clapped a couple of times just so I could see the neighbours and have a long distance chat and feel part of life but once or maybe twice was enough it went on weeks and got more and more straggly, a one off would have been better
Gosh seems ages ago doesn’t it ?
I don’t know if Tom was a great man or not I don’t even know if he was courageous I believe he was doing the walk round the grounds anyway but I do believe the family became greedy for money and fame and it ran away with them and I do believe they totally exploited his name or maybe he was in on it he seemed reasonably astute or maybe he truly thought he was helping and got carried away with all the adulation
I m glad he’s not here to see the mess left behind anyway
Poor grandkids
