When did I start talking to inanimate objects

Is it just me? But I realised today that I talk to many inanimate objects and have done since the kids left home. Cash machines, the car, my awkward shoe which wouldn't go on, I whitter away.

I'm slightly self-conscious others may well think I'm barking.

Do you do this?

Um...............yes, I find myself thanking the toaster for popping up!

My hand's up - I said thank you to an ATM the other day confused.

or animals, my DH laughs at me for chatting to our Jack Russel!

At which point does it become weird though - I don't feel so bad saying 'Good morning Mr Magpie' but when I tell my pen it's very naughty for running out of ink, I suspect I just sound like a loon grin

Honestly Twinkle......if you really were going ga ga, you would not be worried about it, the fact that you are speaks volumes.....................you sound a good sort to me!

Great to hear I am not alone here. I regularly greet my favourite kitchen utensils if I haven't seen them for a few days. I think they appreciate it. Barking? For sure!

Surely you all talk to your computer. It's almost automatic when it makes that noise – a ding or beep or some such – that indicates you have clicked on the wrong instruction or tried to do something else that won't work, to say "Sorry". Isn't it?

I never needed to be mature, to talk with inanimate objects. Been doing it most of my life. Must admit though, that since I matured. I do get strange looks of me kids grin

It's not a new thing and quite common not only in older folk, remember Ethel Merman
( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethel_Merman) oh not sure how to 'link' here yet, but she sang a song in some movie or other, can't remember the name now....called 'I talk to the tree's'. smile.
I also talk to my dog, my budgies and sometimes 'non living' things...

annie33 Mon 09-May-11 16:09:25

Thank goodness I am not alone.I talk to everything(except people)I shout at the TV and Radio. I dont talk to the trees as I have gone off them as they give shelter to Jackdaws who do their ablutions all over the fence and dustbin lids,I talk to the plants and the little man who lives in my computer and does things for me!He is called Stupid! Worst of all I "HUm"and loudly I have been told.

Looking back many years i remember my beloved had a name for the car(susie) and always talked to her. So i dont feel so bad when i trip over the door stop and apologise to it.

I thought everyone did it. I talk to things all the time, the computer (especially when it won't do what I want), the printer; you know the sort of thing - well you did it yesterday wo why arn't you printing today? All sorts of things, today when cooking I knew I had tarragon in the cupboard so I am saying; OK, where are you, I know you are there. Ha ha hiding at the back eh?

Then husband says who are you talking to? Well obviously I get better answers from and they don't answer back or argue! smile

GreyHairedWorrier Sat 14-May-11 19:53:59

My dad's cars were called Susie! grin I shout at the telly. And Jeremy Vine on Radio 2. But I'm nowhere near as bad as DH when there's sport on the TV and he's disagreeing with the ref.

Nannyliz Sat 14-May-11 21:33:01

I talk to my two cats all the time, swear at the computer and printer, shout at the telly and, like you, GreyHairedWorrier, Jeremy Vine, plants, coathangers and that's only a few. smile

Swedenana Sun 15-May-11 06:56:36

Ha! I do it all the time. Maybe I am barking but I catch myself muttering away in the supermarket (nagging the bloody minded trolley), telling things that they're more expensive than they were on my last visit etc. When I do it at home at least I can kid myself that I'm talking to the dog smile

helshea Sun 15-May-11 07:49:01

I do daft weird things all the time, but there again I probably always have :-) My worst two involve telephones.... I ring people from work and then ask them to confirm their telephone number.. when I have blinking rung them. I also find myself talking to voicemail/answerphone messages as if they are live calls.... oh well!!! As we well know talking to yourself is not a sign of madness. The first sign of madness is hairs growing on the backs of your hands...... oh and the second sign of madness is looking for them

nanafrancis Sun 15-May-11 11:44:35

Thank goodness!! I'm as normal as the rest of you!

helshea Mon 16-May-11 22:21:13

Us normal? lol .. I don't think so! Hope not anyway. :-)

glassortwo Mon 16-May-11 22:24:37

I often have a conversation with the recorded messages on my mobile phone, I have lost my marbles grin

Legs55 Tue 17-May-11 16:19:21

I talk to my laptop especially when it misbehaves ie. working slowly or not doing what I want! I talk to my plants, the kettle, toaster, microwave - I'm only 55 & have been doing this for years so not sure if I'm slowly going mad or just a normal harassed female!!!!

clagat Tue 17-May-11 19:29:15

I talk to everything,I knew I had finally lost it when I walked onto my bedroom balcony the other night and said"hello moon how are you tonight"?!!

Binkey Tue 17-May-11 20:53:44

Gosh it feels better to know that am not the only one....
But I think I only do it when I am alone. Have a friend who chats away to herself in the bathroom etc on holiday - but did stop when i told her about it!!
Grandson thinks we are mad when we make rude remarks to other drivers and even madder when we say it's ok as they can't hear us!

tjspompa Tue 17-May-11 22:37:21

Do teenagers count as inanimate objects !! - they never seemed to answer me when mine were that age. Now I just argue with Jane when she sends me down some country lane as a short cut.

grannyactivist Tue 17-May-11 23:53:57

Erm...yes, I talk to inanimate objects - if only that were all. I also hum, loudly and very likely out of tune, in supermarkets, at ATM machines, whilst out walking etc. and only realise I'm doing it when someone comments on how cheerful I am. (They would really like to say, hey loony tunes my ears are hurting; but I live in a town where people are very kind and polite.) I would be content if I only talked to inanimate objects and hummed tunelessly in public, but............I also lose things in the home by putting them away in strange places. Lost my purse? Oh of course, it's in the freezer. Can't find that missing passport? Ah yes, it's in my toiletry bag. If anyone would like to volunteer to come and search my home for the TWO telephone handsets I have mislaid in the last two years, they would be most welcome. confused
