Do you drink a tea at night to help you sleep? If so, which is your favourite?

The avoidance of tea after 6pm helps me sleep smile

AlisonMA Sun 08-Jul-12 11:19:37

Anything is caffiene in is best avoided in the evenings but DH sometimes drinks something called sleepy tea. I never touch the stuff!

Well obviously there's the usual herbal stuff but I favour hot milk with vanilla essence in it.

I find elemis destress oil (external not drunk) is the best thing!

Pg tips or typhoo, tea doesn't keep me awake....however after a big mug running to the loo several times does grin

My mother thinks camomile tea is helpful. I drink blueberry tea in the evening but more as a way of avoiding caffeine late in the day than for any sleep-inducing effect. I still have to get up for the loo even if I go to bed thirsty (and always have, ever since my teens), so I don't go to bed thirsty.

Anagram Mon 09-Jul-12 10:44:25

Yes, I've tried not drinking after, say, 6 p.m. and I still have to get up in the night. I've also tried milk and it makes no difference - so I may as well stick with tea!

Hankipanki Mon 09-Jul-12 10:49:20

Camomile for me but if I have indigestion which is bound to keep keep me awake I drink peppermint tea.

I've ordered some rooibos and some camomile tea, they do not contain caffeine, so will give them a try.
I'll look out for that oil jeni, thank you

I drink Pukka 'Night time' or Peppermint tea if feeling a bit nauseous.-I like the taste of either.sometimes add a spoonful of honey.

gracesmum Mon 09-Jul-12 17:47:19

I too like herbal teas with a spoonful of honey, I suspect the sugar helps with the feeling of well-being and sleepiness!

AlieOxon Mon 09-Jul-12 20:29:08

At the moment I have to get up anyway (colitis) so I can have a cup if thirsty!

I drink Tick Tock Organic Rooibos tea which is naturally caffeine free and rich in antioxidants. I really enjoy it.

Annobel Thu 12-Jul-12 00:04:40

I use that all the time, Sook because caffeine, even in tea, makes me feel jumpy. Usually the only ordinary tea I have is a small bucketful at breakfast time.

Nonu Thu 12-Jul-12 13:46:24

Lavender tea is supposed to very good

Earthynanna Thu 12-Jul-12 15:42:14

I love Clipper Organic SleepEasy tea with a spoonful of local honey or agave nectar.
I suffer dreadfully with insomnia and my research over many years has proved that for me
- Warm Bath with Lavender oil
- Hot Water Bottle in cosy cover
- Sleepy Easy tea
- R4 burbling in the background
Is the perfect remedy for wide awakeness!

Caffeine hangs around for a long time ! And tea has quite a lot of caffeine in it too. Would avoid from mid afternoon if you're having problems.

If still struggling then try www.sleepstation.org.uk

Grannyknot Sun 05-May-13 19:25:16

I'm addicted to my Sleepy Time tea at night. It takes me to dreamland and I sleep like a log. If I can't find Sleepy Time then Clipper Organic SleepEasy is the next best thing.

Gorki Sun 05-May-13 19:35:28

I have never heard of these teas .Are they regional or easily available or are you joking ?

Marelli Sun 05-May-13 19:46:01

An infusion of Valerian will send you off to sleep - but note (!) cats go mad for it! Not handy when you're trying to settle down with it in bed (the tea, not the cat) grin!

granjura Sun 05-May-13 20:53:13

I always settle down with the cat in bed smile and verbena tea (I grow my own) and both help smile

Ana Sun 05-May-13 20:58:08

I've heard Sleepytime Tea is good, Grannyknot, but I hate spearmint, which I believe is an ingredient. Does it taste strongly of spearmint?

Grannyknot Mon 06-May-13 08:32:37

No, Ana, I can't say it does. It's a very light mix. I don't have any at the moment, (usually find it in Sainsbury' s).

Gorki these are real teas. And really nice too.

Rooibos is great but a bit of an acquired taste, I still only drink it occasionally. In SA it is given to babies for its soothing qualities including digestive soothing.

Had anyone else noticed how the cats go nuts about the sleep teas - my daughter has to be careful her cat doesn't burn itself, practically pushes its face into the cup and rubs against it. Apparently it's the valerian they like, it's like catnip to them.
