Hello all , don"t know if this has been covered and I missed it , who do you think will light flame tonight ? Steve Redgrave for me , bit short notice I know

I'm sure the politicians are so pleased Parliament is in recess.Wouldn't they look a bunch of idiots at Prime Minister's question time compared with this lot-real people making 100% effort.

Annobel Thu 09-Aug-12 20:12:09

Don't forget, Grannylin that Seb Coe used to be in Parliament before he became a Lord. So was Sir Chris Chataway who was 5000m world record holder though never an Olympic champion. Sir Ming Campbell was an Olympic athlete too.

Grannylin Thu 09-Aug-12 20:22:51

Yes but they are all nice and don't look like George Osborne!

Annobel Fri 10-Aug-12 15:52:11

Happened on BMX events. Looks so exciting though I can't imagine ever having been that brave myself. What next? Skateboarding? They have snowboarding in the Winter Olympics and the stunts are much the same.

Annobel Fri 10-Aug-12 17:11:26

Cheers for our women's hockey team who have beaten NZ for the bronze and especially for Kate Walsh who played with a broken jaw.

crimson Fri 10-Aug-12 17:18:58

Pleased for them; they were so diappointed when they lost last time.

Annobel Fri 10-Aug-12 17:24:41

I hope the men play equally well. They need to make up for that huge defeat by Holland in the semi-final.

JessM Fri 10-Aug-12 20:09:09

oy -vey. Who picked that 4x400 team? Inexperience in the middle of the pack not good. Poor Christian and poor Dwayne! They could have saved Adam for the final and put MLF in instead!
Will Dobrisky get a medal. There is something about her silly girly demeanour when interviewed that just does not fill me with confidence. So much talent but maybe lacks the tough streak you need for middle distance jostling....

nanaej Fri 10-Aug-12 20:21:43

What a debacle! Though who am I to criticise..could not run for a bus never mind a medal! But agree perhaps the team order not the best!

MaggieP Fri 10-Aug-12 22:47:09

Come on Tom, you must get a medal tomorrow for the diving, not a good start tonight. We all want him to do well, I am sure.flag

crimson Fri 10-Aug-12 23:16:36

As Gabby Logan has just said [and I'd been thinking] baton changing is the athletics equivalent of our penalty shoot outs. I recking that guy who trains our cyclists aught to take over things like that.

Gally Sat 11-Aug-12 12:12:50

Just managed to watch the diving live - Oz tv must be catching up at last! Go Tom, 4th in the semis - tomorrow a Gold? [fingers x'd emoticon]

JessM Sat 11-Aug-12 12:40:00

Well things in the relay teams have not been good for a while... The American women and their world record were awesome.
Glad Tom has got through - he was struggling last night.

crimson Sat 11-Aug-12 12:52:48

Feel so sorry for Adam; he is such a talent and I hope it doesn't knock his confidence. He did seem to have trouble lifting his bad arm at the changeover, but no mention was made of that. There was always the balance of risking someone so inexperienced, but he has the speed to win these races. Unfortunate result for the lad. Fingers crossed for Tom.

Annobel Sat 11-Aug-12 12:54:37

Tom's now looking more lively and confident. Last night he seemed out of sorts.

JessM Sat 11-Aug-12 14:04:29

mm well yes, bad shoulder would have been spared if they had put him on first leg so that they didn't have 2 inexperienced guys doing a handover, one with a sore shoulder.
I'm sure he will live to tell the tale. Feel much more sorry for the two who are in their last olympics rather than their first.

Elegran Sat 11-Aug-12 14:06:26

He was using the sore shoulder to reach round and grab the baton, too. Had he been in the first leg he could have held it on his good side.

"A summer of rain, then a gap in the clouds
and The Queen jumped from the sky
to the cheering crowds.
               We speak Shakespeare here,
a hundred tongues, one-voiced; the moon bronze or silver,
sun gold, from Cardiff to Edinburgh
               by way of London Town,
on the Giant's Causeway;
we say we want to be who we truly are,
now, we roar it. Welcome to us.
We've had our pockets picked,
               the soft, white hands of bankers,
bold as brass, filching our gold, our silver;
we want it back.
We are Mo Farah lifting the 10,000 metres gold.
We want new running-tracks in his name.
For Jessica Ennis, the same; for the Brownlee brothers,
Rutherford, Ohuruogu, Whitlock, Tweddle,
for every medal earned,
we want school playing-fields returned.
Enough of the soundbite abstract nouns,
austerity, policy, legacy, of tightening metaphorical belts;
we got on our real bikes,
for we are Bradley Wiggins,
               side-burned, Mod, god;
we are Sir Chris Hoy,
Laura Trott, Victoria Pendleton, Kenny, Hindes,
Clancy, Burke, Kennaugh and Geraint Thomas,
               Olympian names.
We want more cycle lanes.
               Or we saddled our steed,
or we paddled our own canoe,
or we rowed in an eight or a four or a two;
our names, Glover and Stanning; Baillie and Stott;
Adlington, Ainslie, Wilson, Murray,
               Valegro (Dujardin's horse).
We saw what we did. We are Nicola Adams and Jade Jones,
bring on the fighting kids.
               We sense new weather.
We are on our marks. We are all in this together."

Carol Anne Duffy

Great poem isnt it.
That's the thing elegran sigh.

Butternut Sat 11-Aug-12 19:23:41

Brilliant poem by C.A. Duffy. I didn't know she had written this, so thanks so much for posting it, Ariadne.Big smile

Annobel Sat 11-Aug-12 19:24:42

I do like that poem, thanks, Ariadne. What a great poet laureate - says it as it is!

whenim64 Sat 11-Aug-12 19:31:19

Carol Ann Duffy is brilliant! It's great to have a poet laureate who actually turns out timely poems that reflect the general population's take on things. In fact, it's great to have poems full stop - I stopped expecting them as the last PL gave us far fewer pieces to enjoy.

Ariadne Sat 11-Aug-12 19:51:04

Oh Mo!!! Brilliant.

Annobel Sat 11-Aug-12 19:56:25

I was raising the roof for Mo! Sir Mo! Lord Mo! What a joyful sight as he crossed the line! Can't wait to see him getting his medal and to hear the cheers!

glassortwo Sat 11-Aug-12 19:58:47

Fantastic!!!
