Boris Johnson

By rights I should hate Boris Johnson. He's everything I despise about our society. Privileged by accident of birth, Eton educated, rich from family wealth rather than person effort, Tory, totally unable to imagine life as an ordinary person....the list is endless. But then Boris opens his mouth and the most bizarre words come out. He makes me laugh and how can I not like a man who makes me laugh? How can you not laugh when a politician (people who normally watch every word they say) comes out with,

'As I write these words there are semi-naked women playing beach volleyball in the middle of the Horse Guards Parade immortalised by Canaletto. They are glistening like wet otters and the water is plashing off the brims of the spectators' sou'westers. The whole thing is magnificent and bonkers.'

I can't help it. I love Boris.

Well, yes, I love a maverick too. However, I am absolutely disgusted that he personally invited Murdoch to join him as official guest at the Olympics yesterday - and justified it by saying that top business people should be encouraged in the UK. Very very badly misjudged imho - shame on him.

Nonu Sat 04-Aug-12 13:01:51

Why Granjura ? flag

Murdoch obviously in sucking up mode. Big surprise. Interesting digression from Johnson to Bond and sexy bodies. hmm Thank you gracesmum are we now agreed that arse is not a rude word and therefore not to be avoided on GN ?grin. Which is not to say that I want to describe any person as one. In print.
BJ is obviously high as a kite on the Olympics. One of his personality traits is what I would describe as "low self control". I would not be surprised if this lack of self control does not get him into serious trouble in the coming week. Or will he pop up, covered in English roses as usual?

JO4 Sat 04-Aug-12 13:35:25

"low self control"!!! That's just mean. |How can you possibly know that?

And is there anything wrong with being "high as a kite on the Olympics"? Should we all stay in gloomy mode and let this fantastic event pass us by? hmm

JessM Sat 04-Aug-12 14:21:16

Nothing wrong with being high as a kite as such. it is just a case of where it will get him.
However he is the Mayor of London so at times, a certain amount of tact may be needed.
"low self control" is a professional judgement - It describes the sort of person who is the opposite of the cautious, inhibited, stiff upper lip, stereotype of an English man. He has been in trouble a number of times due to indiscretion and general lack of caution in various ways. He tends to blurt things out and also his clothing is a bit uncontrolled - I heard an MP describe how he was sitting next to him in the House one day and realised that BJ's trousers were stapled together along the inside seam! Not to mention the scruffy un-done jacket in Bejing which was not polite to his hosts in China.
Low self control is great trait in a comedian for instance.
I count myself as someone with naturally low self control - it has got me into trouble in the past, that's for sure. So I know of what I speak. grin

Nonu, not sure about your 'why'? Response will vary depending on whether is was a funny, sarcastic approval - or a genuine question?

Nonu Sat 04-Aug-12 17:38:50

granjura Sat 04-Aug-12 18:13:13

Nothing wrong with being patriotic - but I find it bizarre to say the least that anybody would support Murdoch's personal invitation by Boris (:

JO4 Sat 04-Aug-12 18:13:26

grin

Annobel Sat 04-Aug-12 18:16:31

Given the recent track record of News International, I'm concerned that any British political leader (if that's what BJ is) would touch Murdoch with a bargepole. And, by the way, that also goes for Alex Salmond who appeared to be courting him at one time.

Nonu Sat 04-Aug-12 18:19:29

Granjura , who supported it ?

Nonu Sat 04-Aug-12 18:20:41

forgot flag whatever will I do when olympics over
