kitty Back in the early sixties, I worked with someone who travelled from Leicestershire to Northampton. He told me that he would sometimes meet EH on the train. EH used to say...One day, I shall be famous. Admire the positive attitude.

Actually, it was Englebert who worked for my Dad.

I never met him jingle but Dad kept complaining about the layabout who sang all day and did nothing else.

Englebery used to work for my father - well I say worked, he actually sat around singing and daydreaming and getting on his fellow workers nerves.

RS has gone in for more crooning than rock these days and it really suits him.

DS was on TV about a year ago and was awful with that stupid grin from when he was a child.

I thought Engelbert was fantastic in the Eurovision Song Contest. It actually made me want to see him live; never thought I'd say that thirty or so years ago. What has Rod Stewart reinvented himself as? He couldn't really carry on as he was into his seventies[I keep thinking of Kenny Everett impersonations of him ].

Yes, Leave John Hunphrys alone, I would miss him terribly. You can also leave Rod Stewart who has done a great job of reinventing himself. Have you noticed his wife is always in the audience when he performs?

Yes well, i guess if we sat down for an evening and just did little tally of people on non-fiction non-reality TV there would still be a lot more men than women.
And how many times has Any Questions had a female majority on the panel?

These I'd like to retire but not necessarily because of their age just because I'm fed up with seeing them. Bruce Forsyth [I don't want to hear that he's a national treasure, he's not he's past it].Stephen Fry [too much exposure] Benedict Cumberbatch [same reason] Simon Cowell, Russell Brand, Jonathon Ross, those two so-called comedians who got drunk on Channel 4 and made crude remarks about the Queen. No women in that collection!

It's quite scandalous that there are just so many male presenters on radio/TV, who've been around for years, and now in their 50s, 60s, 70s & 80s ....... and no equivalent females.

So not only do the men get most of the plum jobs in the first place, moving around presenting various programmes, they are then secure and don't get shunted aside as the women do.

Just a word in support of Engelbert, though I agree he needs to retire now. When I was a student I had a summer job in one of the big hotels in a seaside resort. We used to get all the stars staying as they were performing locally. Engelbert was the nicest, politest of them all. A real 'gentleman'. The rudest and most arrogant was Tom Jones, a thoroughly nasty little man.

One for the Leicester folks - Engelbert Humperdinck - I think he's got the message though .

It was about a man who killed his wife because she nagged so much. He buried her with her bum in the air so he had somewhere to park his bike! He told it better than I ever could.

That's what I can't stand about him. But he was ground breaking when he first started and, supposedly, when he goes to the fishing tackle shop at Alnwick everyone just stops and listens and laughs themselves stupid for the duration. I prefer deadpan humour myself [Paul Merton, Jack Dee for example]. Although Tommy Cooper was pretty good thinking about it.

I always thought it was the other way round! Yes, you're right, some of his jokes are funny, but he shouldn't laugh at them himself - it drives me nuts!!

I still laugh at the very first joke I heard Billy Connolly tell on Michael Parkinson. And he deserves a medal for putting up with Pamela Stevenson.

Happy New Year, everyone! Yes please, let's retire Jeremy Clarkson, preferably from an aeroplane at 20,000 feet. And Billy Connelly (I agree, just as a "comedian" - never found him funny, largely because he laughs at his own jokes, which can destroy the funniest ones).

Never mind the age. Can we just not have some people on all the time - Matt Baker and Julia Bradbury spring to mind. On the other hand Alan Titchmarsh can stay.

I agree with Bruce Forsyth, he passed his best years ago, sorry to say I think Paul Mc.Cartney should bow out too, he was very good but the last few times he has performed oh dear, he should give up now before he becomes a laughing stock, & did anyone see Petula Clark on New Years Eve, with Jules Holland, it was painful, got to admire their belief in themselves tho. I couldn't get out their and perform., so your ears are safe from that, O.H. reckons I sing like a scalded cat, lol.

And someone please retire Billy Connolly (as a comedian). He can carry on as an actor for a while longer. He was just embarrassing on the Graham Norton show a week or so ago. Room 101.
