....but this issue is close to my heart.

I'd love it if you all got your dancing shoes on for One Billion Rising on 14th February.

Yes!!! A 'feminist tsunami' is how it has been described. One doesn't need to be a feminist to object to violence against women. Pease join any gathering in your area and swell the numbers of women across the world who want to make their voices heard loud and clear on 14 February smile

Here's a link to show where 'flash-dance' events have so far been arranged around the country. You can go along and show support or join in. There will be many more as this movement grows in the next month. Don't miss out - this is something our great-grandchidren will learn about in their history lessons!

This is my local One Billion Rising but only 10 people have replied to the invites, so anyone else in the Durham area please come and join on the 14th February 12 -2pm.

Nowt near me, unless maniacorbarrow start one?

There's a growing movement on Facebook and you can put it on your own page, then you can change your profile photo to One Billion Rising on the big day. Lots of public sector workers are awaiting the packs so they can use stickers, flyers and badges, and develop their own events.

MiceElf Sat 12-Jan-13 20:44:59

Clicked on the link. But nowt in London. Anyone know of anything?

Notsogrand Sat 12-Jan-13 20:52:32

Eve Ensler in The Vagina Monologues starts on Sky Atlantic at 9pm.

nanaej Sat 12-Jan-13 21:36:07

I have signed up to join the one in Guildford and will try to persuade members of the WI to go along with me. Thanks Butty for the info.

grannyactivist Sat 12-Jan-13 21:46:04

Devon people: there is an even planned for Exeter. I shall be there, will you?

Butty Sat 12-Jan-13 21:53:03

Great to see such support. smile
I can't get to the UK to join in; wish I could. There's nothing hereabouts, but I'll be doing my dance just the same.

grannyactivist Sun 13-Jan-13 10:11:53

Oops, sorry grans. That should of course read, there is an EVENT planned for Exeter.

mrshat Sun 13-Jan-13 20:10:41

Petallus If I was not working on Thursdays I would join you - I am near Watford too. There must be some more Gransnetters within a 10 mile radius of the town? grin

whenim64 Wed 16-Jan-13 08:55:49

One Billion Rising has been mentioned in UK Parliament!

Butty Wed 16-Jan-13 09:10:27

when Great news!
Let's hope this cross-party issue stays live, and that future action will be taken by the Government.

whenim64 Wed 16-Jan-13 09:45:19

The movement is growing by the day. YouTube has quite a few examples of songs and dances being performed specially for One Billion Rising, which is informally affiliated with The Vagina Monologues, Women's Aid and an expanding number of global organisations that campaign about violence to women. Lots of info on the internet, snowballing on Facebook!!

whenim64 Thu 17-Jan-13 15:23:46

One Billion Rising flash mob is now being publicised for Brighton on February 16th. Should be quite a spectacle. Growing by the day!

whenim64 Thu 17-Jan-13 18:54:11

The great Alice Walker.....'I am rising!'

Butty Thu 17-Jan-13 19:29:50

Yes, when - A strong voice to lend to 1bn Rising.

One of her poetry collections is called 'Hard Times Require Furious Dancing'.
