Should prisons be made harsher?.

Another thought I am having is prisons are not harsh enough to deter crime.
If beds were not provided and prisons were not heated this would save money and I am sure people would not offend again if they had to put up with these conditions for months or years.
There should be nothing like TV or any other non essential items.

Ummmm, I was being ironic!

Most people in SC would not admit to being in Brum - it is I think!

Poor old Ken Clarke must be internally fuming!

Prisons should not be comfortable places, they are being punished not pampered.

Prisons aren't comfortable places.

People in prison are being punished by being deprived of liberty, not by being made to live in slum conditions.

You know how some MPs try to impress the public by going to live with only the equivalent of a week of unemployment benefit etc.. maybe Frank would like to spend a week at HMP as part of some social research for us all?

annodomini Sun 03-Feb-13 16:47:03

Maybe Chris Grayling should have to do that, nanaej Or I could suggest a few plenty of other MPs for that exercise.

No beds and not heated - HunterF did you run a dungeon in a past life ?. I don't think prisions should have Sky and other comforts but decent food and a warm bed must be provided, With education and medical care plus exercise and visits from their families and friends. You can always tell the humanity of a country by the way it treats its prison population. If you treat them with due care you treat everyone else better.

dorsetpennt Sun 03-Feb-13 16:57:17

spelling error I meant prisons not prisions - a typeo sorry

Hi Mishap

The use of the stocks is ok with me and will save money.
Another thing they coild do in winter is handcuff offenders to lamp posts on freezing nights.

What about gangs on motorbikes racing around and forcing quantities of castor oil down the throats of first offenders? Then, once they came out of the loo, present them with a bill for the medication and extra stress on the sewerage system.

NfkDumpling Sun 03-Feb-13 18:06:27

Excellent idea! But what punishment would be given to the speeding motor cyclists?

nanaej Sun 03-Feb-13 18:15:00

Maybe some stoning and or public whipping and lashes?? Kneecapping?

That's a thought – bring back public executions. That reduced crime for centuries, didn't it? hmm

Marelli Sun 03-Feb-13 18:19:41

I could bring my knitting...oh no, that was for Madame Guillotine! confused

nanaej Sun 03-Feb-13 18:29:39

be different..crochet instead!

Don't be silly. If you're talking about hangings – go for macramé.

Would tatting be too delicate for such an occasion?

Nelliemoser Sun 03-Feb-13 19:38:41

In very delicate 2 ply hand dyed alpaca yarn.

absent Sun 03-Feb-13 20:24:15

nanaej Only for female executions – too delicate for men – but they have to be phased out.
