Should prisons be made harsher?.

Another thought I am having is prisons are not harsh enough to deter crime.
If beds were not provided and prisons were not heated this would save money and I am sure people would not offend again if they had to put up with these conditions for months or years.
There should be nothing like TV or any other non essential items.

Perhaps they don't! hmm

If ever there was a justification for using four letter words on Gransnet…

Elegran Fri 01-Feb-13 10:39:36

VQ and When you were just ahead of me suggesting the treadmill, but I was going to add that if it could be connected to the National Grid they could generate power too - and if they misbehaved the current could be reversed to zap them into obedience. This thread has gone where I suspect Frank was aiming it - into fantasy and black humour. Best place for it.

I think quite a few of us agree with j07 that you are just a wind-up, Frank -
"Let's see how many ladies (I use the term advisedly) I can upset today.
1) those who support women's rights -tick,
2) anybody who likes the Royal family - tick,
3) anyone in their late 50's without the "benefit" of a man to advise them - how quaint and Victorian - tick
4) those pinko Lefties who think prisoners should be entitled to live - tick"
Who are you going to go for next Frank? Single parents,? those living on benefits or disabled living allowance? Maybe just kicking kittens.

If this is black humour it is puerile and not very funny, if it is indeed fantasy - then it is very dubious.

Agreed!

Perhaps Frank is actually an in,ate in Winson Green?

Tegan Fri 01-Feb-13 13:03:06

I've got some Winson Green Prison scissors in this room somewhere wink.Ex FIL was over the prison workshops. We used to live in clothes made at the prison [think we got the rejects but they seemed ok]. Loons [for me] and donkey jackets [for my ex]. Often used to walk into a pub with FIL only for people in there to walk straight out...He didn't remember them but they sure remembered him.

Ana Fri 01-Feb-13 13:05:08

Oh, those loons....[memories]
Sorry - back to prisons.

Tegan Fri 01-Feb-13 13:11:31

Think they were made for a company called South Sea Bubble [?].

Marelli Fri 01-Feb-13 13:15:09

If we can't have a 'tongue-in-cheek' emoticon, what about a 'yawn' one?
Ana I had a lovely pair of Biba loons - they were cream with a brown zig-zag pattern! I thought I was the bee's knees! When I think about it, I probably looked like them - especially in that colour....shock!

j07 Fri 01-Feb-13 13:16:02

jeni! You can't say that! grin

(yes she can hmm)

HUNTERF Fri 01-Feb-13 13:28:40

Hi gracesmum

I would not go kicking kittens or any kind of animal although I did have to fight off a cat once.
Oddly enough cats do not like me probably because of my contact with dogs.
I hardly ever see any cats in my garden probably due to the fact everybody has a dog in my road.

Inmate!

jeni Fri 01-Feb-13 13:35:57

Cats always love Megrin pity, because I'm allergic to them!

Mishap Fri 01-Feb-13 14:09:50

Ditto jeni - how do cats always know that you do not want them crawling all over you and make a beeline for you!?

Personally I would bring back the stocks - short, sharp and above all cheap!!

gracesmum Fri 01-Feb-13 14:12:57

Wind-up, Frank!!
HunterF and emmaH - sure there is no connection?

vampirequeen Fri 01-Feb-13 16:18:48

Oh elegran I love the idea of prisoners generating electricity for the national grid lol.

If not the national grid then the prison could be self sufficient in electricity. If they run out when their tea is cooking then they'll just have to do a bit more exercise.

There you go Frank...you've turned me from a leftie do gooder to...well not exactly a birch 'em and 'ang 'em high but a vicious retributionist grin

Ana Fri 01-Feb-13 16:25:30

Who's emmaH? confused

feetlebaum Fri 01-Feb-13 16:36:30

"They could also be located on a deserted island."

Look what happened last time we tried that; Australia!

I'm going to prison on Monday. HMP High Down runs a training scheme for prisoners who wish to train in catering and hospitality - they have a restaurant and they need customers, real ones, to practice on. The scheme started a few years ago and seems to be very successful. On release, the prisoners have skills and many have found jobs. The reoffending rate is minimal. A brilliant idea really.

gracesmum Fri 01-Feb-13 17:09:45

Don't tell Frank he'd be horrified - glass in the windows, food, maybe even central heating - and training to help them to make a living without re-offending when they have served their time -and all at his person expense as a tax-payer, whatever next! He'd be beside himself with self righteous indignation.
Privately - what a great idea!

Movedalot Fri 01-Feb-13 17:12:50

I'm guessing that Frank lives in Handsworth. Anyone else got a guess?

Sorry to actually be serious but I do object to prisoners paying less for their TV than hospital patients. sad

gracesmum Fri 01-Feb-13 17:16:32

It's Sutton Coldfield actually or so he says - remember "...one of the most expensive parts of Birmingham"

jeni Fri 01-Feb-13 17:29:30

NOT really part of Brum.
Probably Roman rd then.
