If Radio 1 do play that wretched song.....

on Sunday, then I believe it will show that this country has lost any small semblance of moral decency it was holding onto. And that the heads of a national institution have let all thoughts of ethical reasoning go out of the window in favour of political correctness.

I can only hope that it doesn't make number one.

But, my God, this country has sunk to an all-time low.

Very sad.

Mamardoit Fri 12-Apr-13 13:28:11

I didn't know they still had a Top 40.

There is nothing offensive about the song and as a form of protest it's very mild IMO.

If it's number one the BBC should play it. If it really upsets anyone they shouldn't listen.

I hope that nothing 'kicks off' on Wednesday but only for the sake of her family. I have yet to speak to anyone in real life who thinks a cerimonial funeral is a good idea. It is target and why should the taxpayer foot the bill? Will they give Blair the same sort of send off?

Many, many did suffer in the 80s (not only the miners), and it's too soon to hairbrush it all out. I do think that is happening especially on the BBC. Post Saville they have to be careful to get things right.

Nothing to do with OP but can anyone explain why Mrs T's son is Sir Mark. Did he win 5 gold medals or something?

HappyNanna Fri 12-Apr-13 13:47:56

Mark Thatcher is a 'sir' because he inherited the title by way of his father who I think was a baronet.
Personally, I admired some of the things MT did. However, just like any other MP there were some of the policies I did not agree with. But, the lady is dead and her family should be allowed to grieve in their own way in private and not have to read/hear the sort of stuff that's been in the media in the last few days.

J52 Fri 12-Apr-13 14:01:41

As far as I am aware Denis T was made a Baronet by the Conservatives. Then it was an inherited honour. Well, he did deserve something for putting up with her!!

petallus Fri 12-Apr-13 14:39:54

I already posted this on a different MT thread. Yes, MT gave Dennis the title, and made it hereditary which was unusual, many thought at the time with a view to it passing to Mark eventually.

Who certainly does not deserve the honour in my opinion.

petallus Fri 12-Apr-13 14:41:21

Come to think of it, that's a point in her favour; she was a devoted mother who gave unconditional love to at least one of her children.

Granny23 Fri 12-Apr-13 14:48:52

Precisely HappyNanna = 'her family should be allowed to grieve in their own way in private'. Instead we have a media circus, a more or less state funeral, Parliament recalled, Question Time rescheduled, disruption all round. I have no idea what purpose, if any, is behind all this all this mayhem but have chosen to ignore it as best I can and will make a point of being away from it all next Wednesday. I have no wish to intrude in private grief.

Nelliemoser Fri 12-Apr-13 15:03:25

Our history of full of cartoons etc very disrepectful to much disliked public figures royalty and otherwise. Some of them were very vulgar indeed.

This is modest and was composed in a different context.

I would object to it being censored. Many years ago one newspaper published a cartoon after Prince Philip had been out shooting big game on some foreign trip.

The cartoon showed the royal coat of arms with all the animals lying dead and bleeding. This was late 50s early 60s?

There was a tremendous fuss about it being disrespectful, in fact it was an extremely pertinent satirical statement.

We must not censor clever and appropriate satire, which given the mood of a lot of the public, I think this song is.
If its got to the top of the charts it should be played.

Nelliemoser Fri 12-Apr-13 15:09:36

petallus "At least one of her children"? Well that's all right then. It didn't matter about the girl getting short shrift.
I can't work out if you were being ironic there. hmm
It's the lack of non verbal clues again.

j08 Fri 12-Apr-13 15:44:13

"clever and appropriate satire" What?! Why clever? Or appropriate?

You do realise these morons haven't actually written the song themselves? confused

Mamardoit Fri 12-Apr-13 16:11:16

I'm sure they could write a more appropriate lyrics. But those would be baned.

Couldn't you have used a better word than moron!

j08 Fri 12-Apr-13 16:19:15

No. Which word would you suggest? Bearing in mind that a moron is someone whose mental and emotional development stopped around the age of fourteen?

Why would they want to write alternative lyrics? confused

sunseeker Fri 12-Apr-13 16:27:19

I think a mistake has been made in giving this so much publicity - without it the whole thing would have blown over, but as I said before I don't think the BBC should ban it, just not link it to MT's death. Apart from some obvious exceptions I am against censorship

Mamardoit Fri 12-Apr-13 16:33:14

It is a words one of my 13/14 yearold sons used to discribe a classmate.
He had a good telling off at school. I made him look the word up in the dictionary.

I assume an anti Mrs T song might name her. Like I say I consider it a very mild form of protest. Her son and daughter must know how some of their fellow citizens view their DM and if the GC are adults they must have some idea also. It is sad but if they had burried her quiety and disappeared very few would have shown much interest.

Tegan Fri 12-Apr-13 16:47:58

Marmardoit; that is precisely what I was just thinking to myself. I would have felt more kindly towards her and her family if they had decided to do so. Anyway, it isn't as if she was THE first woman leader in the world; are we to believe that she is more important because she is/was British?? I think not.

vampirequeen Fri 12-Apr-13 19:04:54

As I find myself regularly humming and singing this song I figured I'd better look up the definition of 'moron'.

There appears to be more than one definition of the word so, JO8, could you please explain which 'moron' you meant.

1. A stupid person; a dolt.
2. A person of mild mental retardation having a mental age of from 7 to 12 years and generally having communication and social skills enabling some degree of academic or vocational education. The term belongs to a classification system no longer in use and is now considered offensive.

Another word for George W Bush. Someone who lacks one shred of intellectual curiosity. Someone who uses the word 'misunderestimated'

j08 Fri 12-Apr-13 22:09:41

Why would humming a song from Wizard of Oz make you need to look up the word 'moron'? confused (I did n' t give it a lot of thought tbhhmm)

j08 Fri 12-Apr-13 22:11:30

Silly compromise - "will play a few seconds". hmm

vampirequeen Fri 12-Apr-13 23:02:51

Well, jo8, as I'm singing and humming this song for the same reason that other people are buying it I suppose that makes me the same as them.

As you posted, 'You do realise these morons haven't actually written the song themselves?' I'd like to know which definition of the word you're using.

Do you think I'm:
Stupid
Have special needs
Am George W. Bush

j08 Fri 12-Apr-13 23:49:52

And you can go on wanting to know, lady. Don't you make your ridiculous demands to me. hmm

j08 Fri 12-Apr-13 23:51:45

This thread' s not about you, and it's not about me.

Mamardoit Sat 13-Apr-13 04:25:54

Maybe there is another definition of the word 'moron'

ie Anyone who's taste in music differs to that of the OP.

It's a silly little song for goodness sake.

absent Sat 13-Apr-13 07:45:46

vampirequeen You are clearly none of those things but it did strike me that they are interchangeable. grin

absent Sat 13-Apr-13 07:47:50

j08 This thread, like every one of the others, is about wherever it goes. Few remain totally focused on the subject of the OP. That is what makes them so interesting in a Holden Caufield kind of way.

j08 Sat 13-Apr-13 08:10:45

Marmadoit, I think you might be missing the point slightly! I have nothing against the song itself. grin hmm

j08 Are you telling me that I am self-righteous? How very impolite if you are.
