If you think GN can get a little heated.....

.....you should read some of the expat forums. Most of the protagonists are men. The arguments are sometimes ridiculous. For example, one person says Britain is rubbish and life in France is perfect. Somebody else replies that their life in France has been disastrous and they can't wait to get back to Britain, which is wonderful. If I try mildly pointing out that both countries have their good and bad points, and you don't have to hate Britain to enjoy living in France, I get jumped on from both sides!
And the political arguments can get really vicious, with personal insults flying around.
I have fallen foul of one member who is an ex-policeman and gets very annoyed whenever I mention some news story about police corruption or incompetence, misogyny, homophobia or racism, even though I always point out that the majority of police officers are probably perfectly honest and fair. He always says the offences are only 'alleged' and goes very quiet when they are found to be true. As an ex-teacher, I just feel sad when stories appear about rogue teachers, but I don't take them as a personal insult. He also objects to my atheism and left-wing views. I have to enjoy that I quite enjoy jousting with him. If I couldn't take the heat, I would stay out of the kitchen! However, he has been responsible for several members leaving the forum, especially women.

I find Gransnet to be a haven of polite, kind, intelligent people, mostly women, with a scattering of some very nice men.

Nice one berdiesmile

annodomini Wed 09-Oct-13 09:22:42

berdie, surely you can exempt yourself from your strictures on your fellow men. You are an asset to us on Gransnet. smile

Greatnan Wed 09-Oct-13 09:42:24

Welcome, berdie, nice to have you on board. I have many lovely men in my family now - grandsons, grandsons-in-law, son-in-law - they have changed my mind about men! I am afraid many of the men I knew of my generation and older were taciturn, sexist and generally useless, and that includes my father, uncles, brother, husband, brothers-in-law and the husbands of most of my friends. There were honourable exceptions, of course, and I am sure all our GN men are amongst them!
I am not sure that the kind of woman who would rise to the top in politics would necessarily be an improvement on the kind of man who does, although Merkel seems O.K.

Angela Merkel is great!

berdie Wed 09-Oct-13 11:08:31

I have great respect for Angela Merkel, and Julia Gillard in Australia, I'm convinced she was a threat, because she spoke common sense, and that frighten's male MP's. So sadly, she had to go.smile

Just because you keep repeating something Greatnan doesn't make it come true!

j08 Wed 09-Oct-13 11:52:16

Who was GN quoting there? confused

Greatnan Wed 09-Oct-13 12:13:25

I was quoting my own OP. I think I am entitled to say the truth of what I have found on Gransnet, am I not? I have made so many friends and had such wonderful sympathy and support from the huge majority of members. That was why I posted the thread - to point out how very nice this forum is, compared with many others. Long may it continue.

j08 Wed 09-Oct-13 12:32:13

Oh. Right.

Yes, of course. smile

Aka Wed 09-Oct-13 13:33:12

OK hmm

I'm sure we could all think of people who have not been treated with sympathy/kindness by members of Gransnet. My sister had it suggested to her that her "emotional stability" was in doubt. Needless to say, she doesn't post on here any more.

janeainsworth Wed 09-Oct-13 17:00:35

I can't remember the post you refer to, Ceesnan, but there's nothing stopping your sister posting, is there?

Greatnan Wed 09-Oct-13 17:06:55

I thought it would be nice if we just concentrated on the pleasant aspects of Gransnet - of which there are many. smile

Ceesnan Wed 09-Oct-13 17:17:07

No, there is nothing to stop her posting apart from her dislike of confrontation. I was out of the country at the time and not interested enough to follow GN while away or I might have persuaded her to grow a thicker skin and keep going.

Greatnan Wed 09-Oct-13 17:32:08

Ceesnan, you must have found something pleasant to keep you here, and I hope you always will. flowers

Ana Wed 09-Oct-13 17:34:35
