I thought it would be a good idea to open a thread where those of us who are upset by this news can comfort each other. Better to share thoughts here and leave the IMPORTANT thread for on-going efforts to find her.

....and a huge thank you to you Gracesmum for originaly voicing on FB what we were all thinking flowers

annodomini Fri 01-Nov-13 10:34:14

Thanks, Gracesmum. I keep trying too think what more I can do!

annodomini Fri 01-Nov-13 10:34:37

Oh, send me to Pedants' corner!

whenim64 Fri 01-Nov-13 10:59:51

It's very kind of you. anno and I have spent quite a bit of time with Carol, but we also know what's going on behind the scenes and there are some very active Gransnetters, Mumsnetters and others who are linked in to the support group, who are up at the crack of dawn, busy bombarding everyone they can think of with requests, instructions, suggestions, translations into French and a flea in their ear to get Carol's plight noticed and acted on.

I just happen to be knocking about on here and am able to update with news. They're the ones with their heads down, working away to get results. If I name them, I'd be bound to miss a few names and be kicking myself. As the old cliche goes....they know who they are flowers

I have very limited access to the internet at the moment but just a want to say that I think what you are all doing is absolutely marvellous. I am sure all the hard work will pay off and Greatnan will be found safe and well very soon. flowers to you all.

Gally Fri 01-Nov-13 11:32:22

Hear hear (?here?) to that Gillybob. Everyone is doing a fantastic job. I feel very useless, but am sharing everything that comes my way

I am so shocked to read this and desperately hope that she is found safe. She helped me greatly in my time of trouble and extended a friendly hand. Thank you for opening this thread granny23 for those of us who can do little to help.

I was travelling when all this sad news came to light - and no Internet for a couple of days and now hours behind you all in USA - I saw the threads yesterday and did my bit with Facebook and Twitter but too shocked to comment. The part I find SO horrifying is that the Gendarmes etc did not start to look immediately - I can see the point about her car giving them an area but everyone knew that she went off in more remote parts. Like all of you I just so hope that she is found soon and was able to have some shelter wherever she is. I now have to go through all the threads and FB etc to glean what has been happening.

Best description of Carol/Greatnan today in the Manchester Evening News article..... INTREPID

If they only knew how much!

Nelliemoser Fri 01-Nov-13 12:37:05

Intrepid indeed! that is Greatnan summed up.

I am impressed by how helpful the many GN expats have been able to be with their knowledge of local services and ability to communicate with the French Authorities. A wonderful mixture of GNrs pooled talents and contacts have managed to get things moving.

Making these contacts would have been so very much harder without the power of this Forum.

Big thanks to Whenim and Anno who know Carol better than most and have visited her in France.

I just keep sending out strengthening thoughts to wherever she is. That may be considered a sort of prayer.

annodomini Fri 01-Nov-13 13:06:15

when, I have sent an email to the Liverpool Echo and emphasised that she always takes precautions when out walking and that she is a very good driver. Intrepid? Yes! that too!

Tegan Fri 01-Nov-13 13:35:08

I'm just thinking about the references to her laptop playing up. I know that there have been times when my computer hasn't been working and I've felt really isolated. Wonder more and more if she was sorting out that and not walking somewhere? Like the rest of you, this is just on my mind constantly.

Mishap Fri 01-Nov-13 13:42:52

The worry lies in the absence of contacts at all, even if her laptop was playing up and she was unable to communicate in that way. Even if she had gone to sort out her computer problems, she would have made contact with someone by now. What a truly dreadful worry for family and friends.

Now that the police are involved we have to assume that all hospitals have been contacted and traffic police, in case there has been some mishap whilst on the road to a town to sort out her computer.

Keep up the good work everyone.

Bez Fri 01-Nov-13 13:55:12

I read a post somewhere that Gendarmes had gone to her flat and found nothing amiss - so sadly she is not there sorting things.

Sook Fri 01-Nov-13 14:35:36

I agree with you Mishap about the absence of contacts it is very worrying. Not too sure what the weather conditions are like over there at the moment. Let's hope she is found soon.

She has some very good friends on this forum, hugs to all involved.

Ariadne Fri 01-Nov-13 16:11:42

Bez yes, the gendarmes had been to the flat. I've just posted on the big thread that the northern media are picking it up - let's hope it spreads nationally. Fast.

Iam64 Fri 01-Nov-13 16:14:51

An echo and thanks to Gracesmum and others for the way they express their admiration and gratitude to Greatnan's family, to when, anno and their battalions of folks, all determined to do everything possible to support the search for Greatnan.

Reddevil3 Fri 01-Nov-13 16:20:19

An article has just appeared in the 'mail online' , covering greatnan's disappearance. Well done to whoever got them to print it.

Glammy Fri 01-Nov-13 16:27:14

Such a worrying time, we can only hope that all our thoughts give the family strength

Mamie Fri 01-Nov-13 16:28:19

I think this must be the first time that we are united in praise of the Daily Mail! Not sure what Carol would think!

annsixty Fri 01-Nov-13 16:31:27

Just caught up with this again today and cannot imagine the despair her Family and friends are going through. I hope so much they get some news soon.

merlotgran Fri 01-Nov-13 16:58:17

Mamie, Pity there isn't a wry smile emoticon.

Good article. Let's hope it helps the search.

Nelliemoser Fri 01-Nov-13 17:08:16

I am not even daring to think about the weather conditions.

nonnasusie Fri 01-Nov-13 17:08:29

Like a previous poster I thought this was a lighthearted plea for her to return to Gransnet when I read it at the beginning of the week! Having just returned to Gransnet after a few days I now realize the seriousness of the situation and join my fellow posters in the sincere hope that she is found safe and well a.s.a.p.

jogginggirl Fri 01-Nov-13 18:13:04

Not often on G/N these days but I saw this story on the news and immediately thought " oh no I hope that's not Greatnan " so I logged on here to find out that it is (sad) All good wishes to her family and hope she is soon found safe and well xx
