I thought it would be a good idea to open a thread where those of us who are upset by this news can comfort each other. Better to share thoughts here and leave the IMPORTANT thread for on-going efforts to find her.

The weather is fine and dry there at the moment, flower. That snow soon went and she posted photos she had taken of the lovely autumn colours last week, just before her laptop started really playing up. Thankfully, the search won't be hampered by snow.

How awful for her family and friends. I do hope Greatnan is found soon. This just feels horrible.

It is strange that I was thinking about Greatnan this morning when I woke. I do hope there will be news soon. I wonder what the reaction has been in the estranged daughter's household. If Carol is rescued the outcome could be a blessing in disguise.

So shocked to read this. Praying that Greatnan is found safe and well - and for her worried family in NZ. Have shared the poster on my FB page.

Marelli Wed 30-Oct-13 16:59:15

Like Flowerofthewest, I had an email from Carol's grandson-in-law yesterday evening. We all feel so useless, don't we - surely there'll be some word soon? Have done all the Facebook sharing I can. Hoping against hope that she's sheltering in one of the little huts that someone spoke of. I hope that wherever she is, that she's not afraid, and feels confident that she'll be found.

I've just returned from visiting relations at Bamburgh for the day. I was hoping and praying that by the time I managed to get online the news would be that if they hadn't at least found her, her car would have been found which would give some indication of the area where she went for a hike.

As each hour passes the concern naturally deepens. How horrendous for her family.

As someone said earlier, this has brought out all that is the best about Gransnet.

Safe return from your experience Greatnan

Mishap Wed 30-Oct-13 17:03:18

I was not aware of this - I can only hope that she will return safe and sound soon.

petallus Wed 30-Oct-13 17:10:09

I've only just seen this. How shocking and upsetting.

I do hope we get good news soon.

dustyangel Wed 30-Oct-13 17:16:58

I've only just come in and read this.
What shocking news.
Praying that Greatnan is found safe and well soon. And for her family who must feel so helpless.

Wheniwasyourage Wed 30-Oct-13 17:17:42

Plenty of bumping going on on MN. How sad to hear of this; I hope she is found soon.

French police taking things seriously and it now feels like organised searches are happening. Lots of different people being drawn in, inhabitants of small communes, hunting groups, villagers, police, tourists, walkers, cyclists and so on being asked to look for Carol.

moomin Wed 30-Oct-13 17:47:58

That's great news when

merlotgran Wed 30-Oct-13 17:52:34

I do hope they soon find greatnan's car which might give a clue as to her chosen route. I remember her posting about how important it is to park the car where it can be spotted in the event of a search.

Daisyanswerdo Wed 30-Oct-13 17:59:46

I've only just read about this and am shocked and concerned. My thoughts are with her family, and with everyone searching.

LizG Wed 30-Oct-13 18:04:08

Prayers and thoughts now for the teams who are doing the searching. And for her family too.

Faye Wed 30-Oct-13 18:05:58

I have just caught up with this very worrying news. Her family must feel so far away.

annodomini Wed 30-Oct-13 18:12:44

I hadn't remembered that merlot. I do hope she did that, though so far it hasn't been spotted - unfortunately it's black and might be less easy to see in shady or dark conditions.

Zephrine Wed 30-Oct-13 18:14:49

Members of Grannynet have asked me to share their sincere best wishes for a safe and speedy return and are offering prayers and positive thoughts for Greatnan.

whenim64 Wed 30-Oct-13 18:19:36

That's very kind, zephrine. Please tell them thank you very much.

Marelli Wed 30-Oct-13 18:20:54

That's so good of them, Zephrine. x

I live just a short distance away from Greatnan's daughter and son-in-law but don't know their surname or e-mail addresses. I should be grateful if someone who does would let me know. I have been looking forward so much to meeting her when she comes to New Zealand at Christmas time; we had intended to meet before I left the UK but what with all the preparations and renovating the house, I couldn't manage to find the time for a long weekend in France. I too had a sleepless night – I found out the news yesterday evening (it's Thursday morning here) and when I did sleep I had horrible dreams about mountains.

She is indeed a most resourceful woman and, like others, I profoundly hope she has kept herself safe and will be found soon.

Ariadne Wed 30-Oct-13 18:35:00

As you say, absent a most resourceful woman! And that, I hope, may help.

absent Wed 30-Oct-13 18:36:32

I have read the other thread and see that Fiona's e-mail address is on there.

Greatnan is so excited about the new home with room for a horse that her daughter and son-in-law had just moved to. In addition, he has recently gained a new and prestigious job which means he will not have to be away from home as previously when he was a ferry captain. I know she is hugely excited about her trip to NZ this year.

Granny23 Wed 30-Oct-13 18:41:20

Absent Her daughters name is on the 'IMPORTANT' thread.

'Her daughter, Fiona Conyers, is coordinating a poster campaign......'

I forgot that you lived so near to Greatnan's family. Hope that you can find a way to help them. Most of us feel pretty helpless stuck here in the UK.

noodles Wed 30-Oct-13 18:53:16

Awful news about Greatnan and what a dreadful time for her family. Like everyone else, I hope Greatnan is safe and sound and will soon be home.
