I thought it would be a good idea to open a thread where those of us who are upset by this news can comfort each other. Better to share thoughts here and leave the IMPORTANT thread for on-going efforts to find her.

Just logged on. Hoping for news soon.

Feel so anxious about Greatnan. Hoping she is found very soon.My thoughts are with her family.

Nelliemoser Wed 30-Oct-13 19:12:50

Greatnan did say once, that she took proper safety equipment with her when she walked including a whistle and she knew about the international distress signal for walkers climbers etc. I assume she might have taken an emergency shelter, such as a space blanket etc. In case she was stranded.

whenim64 Wed 30-Oct-13 19:29:01

Yes, nellie her boot is crammed with all sorts of equipment. She fishes out what she needs according to her assessment of the walk she is going on. What impressed me was that, whenever we stopped for a walk or picnic, she would fish out a mountain map to locate where we were and what else was further along the mountain pass. There was only one occasion when we went along a walk where she hadn't been before, and she stopped to consult the map several times.

I'm so glad to have international connections who have shared this on their FB pages. Can't help but be concerned after so many days without contact, but hoping for the best. Greatnan is a hugely resourceful woman.

I can't seem to stay away from the computer, just want to hear some news, hopefully good.

Elegran Wed 30-Oct-13 20:18:46

I keep coming back to see whether there is any news.

MiceElf Wed 30-Oct-13 20:37:36

Mark Owen, her grandson has asked as many people as possible to contact any news media and also France 24. If you. And if you can do this in French it would be good. My French is a bit basic, but I know there are some fluent speakers on here.

Me too Elegran. With daylight gone and still no news, no sightings of the car, I am afraid my imagination is running riot blush. Need to get a grip - worrying is no help to anyone is it?

Nonny Wed 30-Oct-13 20:45:49

I have only just switched on and read both threads about Greatnan being missing. I love reading her posts and hope that she is found safe and well very soon.

LizG Wed 30-Oct-13 20:46:26

Same here Elegran can't settle to anything.

bikergran Wed 30-Oct-13 20:49:48

wombat22 Wed 30-Oct-13 21:20:56

whenim64 Wed 30-Oct-13 21:32:56

Please do visit the Facebook page set up for Carol by her family, 'Carol Sheridan Missing' and post on there, or share what has been been added.

janeainsworth Wed 30-Oct-13 21:45:06

I've shared the 'Carol Sheridan Missing' page on Facebook.
I feel so sorry for Carol's family and am hoping against hope that she is safe somewhere.

Marelli Wed 30-Oct-13 21:50:59

Just shared it, too. Wish there was more we could do.

FlicketyB Wed 30-Oct-13 21:53:24

Carol and I were pm ing earlier this year. I do hope she is found safely.
I know in the UK when these things happen planes and helicopters use fly over difficult terrain using thermal imaging to find people. Do they do the same in France?

glassortwo Wed 30-Oct-13 22:08:15

Just shared th new page.

kittylester Wed 30-Oct-13 22:08:59

I'm off to bed now but really hoping for good news in the morning. (((hugs))) to all.

Nelliemoser Wed 30-Oct-13 22:18:05

I find sitting at home not being able to do anything practical is very hard. Everything practical that can be done at this time of night has been done. All I am doing is to keep logging in.
It was a about three a.m last night and as I had woken up I logged in. As someone else has said I hope she is not injured and frightened.

tanith Wed 30-Oct-13 22:24:39

I can't imagine how hard this must be for her family.. come home safe greatnan.

Nelliemoser Wed 30-Oct-13 22:27:30

Is this post by Carol likely to have been of any use.

The Alps seem to be full of old ladies living alone in isolated places! Last week I met a Swiss woman who lived up a cart track and had no electricity. Today, I was walking from the Col Des Arces and I stopped to check my route with a French woman working in the garden of a chalet in a remote part of the forest. We chatted for about twenty minutes and she invited me to pop in whenever I am passing! I have also found the English-Speaking Association of Haute Savoie, which has various activities, including Ladies' Nights. If I am not careful, I will develop a social life!

Flickety they have sophisticated mountain rescue which is part of the emergency services, search dogs, volunteers, helpful local people who know the terrain, good communications, and walkers, cyclists and other tourists who will be alerted to watch out for her. Not sure if a St Bernard will roll up with the brandy, but their thermal search techniques in avalanches and the like are amazing. However, the weather is fine and dry at the moment, so they've got good opportunities to move about faster on the mountains.

whenim64 Wed 30-Oct-13 22:30:17

Nellie yes, we've shared that info in the first hour or so that we started to wonder where she was. Thanks.

whenim64 Wed 30-Oct-13 22:32:42

The English-Speaking Assoc Carol refers to there hasn't posted on their website since last October, but it's clear now that Carol has not been out on a Ladies Night.
