A four line poem I shall endeavour to print,
I know it is rubbish, I can take a hint,
Show me up ladies, and do a lot better,
Who? is the most poetic Gransnetter.

I watch the clouds go scudding by,
The pink, the grey, the orange sky.
And far above a trail of white,
That brings my love to me tonight.

What a pity there isn't a heading for Poetry on the main FORUM topics.

Any chance GNHQ?

LizG Sun 10-Nov-13 19:40:21

There are so many brilliant poems here, thank you everyone

When I wrote my 'Grandad's got an ipod' poem, I thought I would love to suggest a poetry thread on GN but was afraid of being thought of as daft. Glad newist was brave enough. (Not that I think mine is wonderful but what a lovely thread it has proved to be).

newist Sun 10-Nov-13 21:33:43

I think your Grandad poems are truly wonderful smile

I'm not sure a separate Poetry forum would work. Poems tend to pop up in places where they are appropriate. They can be poignant, funny, sad, controversial or just plain daft. I'd rather read or write them in context than see a poem languishing in splendid isolation because no one has noticed it.

Grannyknot Mon 11-Nov-13 08:22:06

Caz - love your romantic poem.

JessM Mon 11-Nov-13 08:33:55

we have had several outbreaks of poetry before on occasion katyk grin
Pity really that the best of 'em are not collected - maybe we should have a "gransnet best poems" thread where we could cut and paste our favourites?

Elegran Mon 11-Nov-13 09:02:35

Granny23 I have posted your Remembrance Day poem on my (personal) Facebook page - I know you will not see it, but thank you for it.

I am sorry, I meant * Grannyactivist* In my defence, I was rushing to get out of the house in time to catch a bus at 9.19, and not be late yet again for a lecture at Surgeon's Hall (number four in a series of five)

This one, very relevantly for the date, was on how the experiences of army surgeons in wars from the Middle Ages up to the present day have contributed to knowledge of the workings of the body and the effects of severe trauma, and the development of new techniques in surgery, anaesthesia and the control of sepsis.

The good news is that "lessons have been learnt" from the sufferings of the wounded. The bad news is that weaponry continued and still continues to play leapfrog with the ability to deal with the results of its use.

We paused to observe 2 minutes of silence at 11 am, and I passed around a copy of Grannyactivists poem.

KatyK Mon 11-Nov-13 15:37:27

Thank you Newist smile

Oh what a joy is getting old
We've got it made, or so I'm told
Our kindly ministers bestow
All sorts of free gifts, as we know.

Two hundred pounds to spend on fuel,
And though the price is very cruel,
We only heat one room a day
And from its warmth we need not stray.

I hope I last as long to see,
A licence free for my T.V.
I've had my pass to go on buses,
It's such a shame my house none passes!

So never mind the aches and pains,
Just concentrate on all the gains.
There must be some, it's not all rotten,
But what they are I've plain forgotten!

cazthebookworm Mon 11-Nov-13 17:15:07

Thank you Grannyknot

Nannyfran

There's plenty more things going free
The sun, the moon, the stars, the sea,
A mountain, a river, a field, a tree,
And not forgetting, a poet like me!

(Ha Ha) Joke

So count your blessings, it could be worse,
And send us please another verse,
To tell us of the special things
That just for you, contentment brings.

I'm glad I'm not young
I like being old,
but my hair's getting thin
and my hands are cold.

I see in the mirror
my grandmother's face
and if noone's looking
I'm quite a disgrace.

My grandchildren think
I'm a hundred or two,
I walked with the dinosaurs
and Queen Bess too.

Can't do technology
or open the bleach,
I seem to be shrinking,
too much out of reach

like climbing a mountain
or learning Aztec,
though welcoming still,
little arms round my neck.

When I was feeling sad and low
And couldn't think of where to go
For help and comfort with my plight
I came upon this lovely site

Where nans (and also grandads too)
Help each other to get through
The ups and downs of family strife
And all those problems that is life

It really helped for me to share
My worries with those who seemed to care
And not just problems and worries here
Giggles and laughs and lots of cheer

Oh haven't I said the site's name yet?
I think you've guessed it's called Gransnet. grin

I really liked the poems, dears,
Some made me feel quite giddy,
And one or two made me me laugh out loud,
(Especially the one from Tiggy!)

Alred De Musset
Called his cat ''Pusset''
His accent was affected
But that was to be expected.......

I really like to hear a pun.
In fact I think they're rather fun
I can't remember when I heard this rhyme
But I've known it for a very long time.

I'm off tomorrow to entertain,
My friend and I do it again and again.
It's called 'Upstairs, Downstairs ,lucky dip.'
I do hope it all goes with a zip.

Three blood tests before I start,
I hope there's nothing wrong with my heart
One is to see if I have gout
HenryVIII had better watch out.

Pack my bag, grab coat and run
S.O.S. from poorly grandson
Driving through the rainy night
Tortured breathing what a fright

Watching, waiting....we can't take a gamble
Pack him a bag and off to Bramble (*)
Pneumonia's horrid and gave us a fright
Now he's in safe hands we'll say goodnight

*Bramble is the children's ward

grannyactivist Tue 12-Nov-13 01:39:41

Watching, waiting, through the night
Hoping everything's alright
Checking phone for text or call
Wishing that asleep I'd fall

News at last, he's rather ill
He's very hot, but feeling chill
He's three years old and he's not happy
To be in hospital, poor wee chappy.

nannyfran Tue 12-Nov-13 14:11:20

Caz, it was very tongue in cheek and I'm really not such a miserable old "B!"
I'll try and put some of my pleasures to verse soon and hope I can maintain the brilliant standard of all the other Grans!

nannyfran Tue 12-Nov-13 14:14:37

grannyactivist, I've just seen your very moving verse and my heart goes out to you.I pray your little one will be better soon. Please let us know.

LizG Tue 12-Nov-13 14:33:49

Such wonderful words you have put to rhyme
Reading them through makes me lost in time.
Happy, sad, joyous, thoughtful and fun.
My day has been made. Thanks everyone.
