Anyone found my misplaced marbles?

Off work this week, lots to do. On Monday morning I was rushing to go out to see DGDs. Had to stop off at the Post Office to post a birthday present. Got to car park, switched off engine, grabbed handbag & was walking towards the high street when it dawned on me that the parcel was sitting on the kitchen table.

Got through yesterday without too much difficulty except that I had forgotten to do my homework for my evening Spanish class.

DH has a big birthday on Saturday & DD is hosting an 'at home' for him. Since she is working in London this week guess who's actually doing the cooking? Yep you guessed.

DD had requested that I do one of my Christmas hams so off I trotted to the local supermarket only to discover that they don't stock them till nearer Christmas.

Back in the car for a trip to Asda, a twenty five minute drive from home. Walking towards the store rummaging in my bag for trolley £1 I had a very clear vision of me doing online gift shopping this morning and of course my purse was sitting beside the iPad!!

Once I've finished my very strong brew I'll try again. Give me strength.

I am always walking into a room and forgetting why I am there, forgetting the names of people I have known for years, making shopping lists and leaving them on the kitchen table. I could go on and on but I forget all the things I usually forget!!

I think my brain is now so full that it is deciding to forget unimportant things. I like the story about Einstein who was said not to know his times tables claiming that he didn't want to clutter his brain with something he could look up (now why do I remember that story but couldn't remember my car registration number the other day?)

I've not had many cars over the years, but find that I could only ever remember the number of the last car I'd had [probably because it took several years for the number to penetrate my brain by some sort of process of osmosis].

I think those who have suggested it is because our brains are full must be right. Any time now some scientist is going to come out with a theory about it. grin

There was a thread a while ago about some sociologist who said (more or less) that it was because old people hang on to too many old memories and outdated notions and experiences, and should all spring-clean their brains to make way for the new stuff.

He was shot down in flames on here - our memories are what made us what we are, and our experiences of life are a database for the young and ignorant to draw on.

I went to the sorting office to collect a parcel today. Only got halfway to the car before I remembered that I'd left the card in the kitchen!

This thread is lovely. I lost most of my marbles in my teens and the rest when I caught baby brain after the birth of DD1, along with my ability to remember names and dates. At last I feel normal!

Charleygirl Sat 23-Nov-13 21:56:36

Galen I have had my car around 7 years, I know that there are around 31,000 miles on the clock, it is a blue Micra, but no more. I have no idea what my mobile phone number is so many times I have said I do not possess one to get me out of a mega embarrassment.

Galen Sat 23-Nov-13 22:00:06

Re phone! I do the same!

Galen Sat 23-Nov-13 22:03:04

I DO. Know my name, age, address, DOB, who is on the throne, who the present PM is and can spell world backwards. I can also do serial sevens and remember 3 items for half an hour. So! I'm completely normal!grin

Charleygirl Sat 23-Nov-13 22:05:33

That is you and me "Galen*. Are we on our own?

Tegan Sat 23-Nov-13 22:08:09

Strangely enough I've got a small bag of marbles on the desk next to me. They've been there for ages [I think they came out of a cracker]. Perhaps I should carry them around with me at all times. Or even offer them to people who are looking a bit confused [like handing out flowers to people in my hippie years].

Ana Sat 23-Nov-13 22:08:12

What's serial sevens? confused I can't be normal as I have no idea...

Galen Sat 23-Nov-13 22:10:38

100-7 -7 -7 etc
Eg 93, 86, 79 etc:-

Ana Sat 23-Nov-13 22:38:48

Is that an established test for marble-loss? I'll have to prepare a crib-sheet...hmm

Galen Sat 23-Nov-13 22:45:21

Yip!

Aka Sat 23-Nov-13 22:48:31

Do I come here often? hmm

Galen Sat 23-Nov-13 23:13:13

hmm who are you?

harrigran Sat 23-Nov-13 23:13:40

tiggypiro your fleece cardigan is probably in the car. When I go to visit GC I put an anorak and a fleece in the car so I have clothing to cover any activity, only one gets worn and the other invariably gets left in the car.

NfkDumpling Sun 24-Nov-13 07:40:40

Oh Crips. I can't reliably remember three things for thirty seconds let alone half an hour. And can you use fingers for the sevens thing?

Gally Sun 24-Nov-13 08:03:35

I have a problem with cucumbers and cauliflowers. Usually say ' you know, that long green thing you have with salad' and as soon as I say ' pale green thing with white flowery bits in the middle', I remember its name sad. I have a set of specs in every room, but at some point in the day, every day, I can't locate even one. I make copious notes and even notes of where I have left previous notes, but, I can remember the registrations of all my Dad's cars and even some of mine which is really useful to know wink
