....That is so life affirming? I can get up with the usual slight angst and gloomies, but then that warm, semi liquid, vaguely golden syrup flavoured, mush slides down. And taking on the day suddenly becomes quite possible.

Is the nearest thing we have to mother's milk?

(shame about the mince pie that closely followed this morning's bowlful)

Just eating mine now, with a sprinkle of brown sugar and a few sultanas. Delicious and will keep me full all day.

What are we talking about here - instant, or soak your oats all night first D-I-Y porridge?

If the easy stuff is OK I might be tempted to give it whirl, as a change from my regular fruity cereals...

I start every day with a big bowl of porridge [I like the brand with a man wearing a kilt on the package]...I add a few nuts and sliced banana. It is the only cereal for me.

When I was with exdh, we went through a phase of having porridge late evening/night while watching a film. Proper porridge oats (no need to soak) cooked with all milk, no salt.

So far so good(ish)??? Yes, should have been half milk, half water or at the very least skimmed or semi skimmed milk.

But no, once ready I would put it in bowls, pour cream over the top and sprinkle with Demerara sugar. Lush! blush

Being a Scot, born and bred, I should like porridge... but I don't! My paternal granny used to take hers with salt and wouldn't let us indulge in anything as decadent as sugar or syrup. I've disliked it ever since.

I have porridge nearly every morning, winter or summer. Half milk, half water, quick blast in the microwave and it's just as delicious as done on top of the cooker. I add fruit.

I love Oats-so-Simple made with semi-skimmed milk because I'm always in a hurry but I make it in a pan not the microwave. A dollop of Greek yoghurt on top with a tiny drizzle of honey.......Delicious and keeps me full until lunchtime.

I lurve my porridge but it must be Scott's. Sometimes honey and cinnamon added
Put a cup of porridge in a piece of muslin, tie it up, hang from bath tap allowing water to flow over it as you fill the bath. Good way to soften skin.

Am now fantasising about porridge - you bad bad girls. May just have some for my lunch.

Agus and then pop it in the pan - love recycling- well done

Feetlebaum At weekends and Christmas I have the Jordan's jumbo oats done in the micro. Weekdays (winter) I have one and a half bags of oatsosimple. Plain, but I add tip of teasp golden syrup. smile

jinglbellrocks Fri 03-Jan-14 12:12:11

Feetle Don't bother with soaking raw oatmeal! You would never keep that up.

jinglbellrocks Fri 03-Jan-14 12:14:31

First time I had porridge was in a big tent smelling of canvas, in a wet Welsh field. Was at Girl Guide camp. Loved it from then onwards.

Feetlebaum proper DIY porridge is not difficult or time consuming. 1 cup of oatmeal (not porridge oats) 1.5 cups of water, stir, cover bowl and give 5 minutes in the microwave last thing at night while taking pills. In the morning add 1.5 cups of milk, stir, another 5 minutes in microwave while making coffee - ready and delicious. Salt for me, something sweet for DH on low salt diet.

I find that rolled oats or instant produces a gloopy result whereas real oatmeal, especially if slightly toasted, makes porridge with a bit of bite to it.

annodomini I could not agree more. I hate it for similar reasons. It was forced on me at school.

rockgran Fri 03-Jan-14 12:19:08

A handful of porridge oats in a bowl, add water and into the microwave till it fluffs right up. Then golden syrup and a dash of milk. Comfort in a bowl.

jinglbellrocks Fri 03-Jan-14 12:20:55

Mmmmm.......

I have porridge every morning and I cook it in the microwave. Usually I have a spoonful of honey but for a change I bought some frozen mixed berries. Now I'm not sure whether to put them into the porridge frozen so that they warm up and thaw during their time in the microwave or do I thaw them overnight and put them on to the hot porridge after I've cooked it.

As an afterthought maybe I put them thawed on top of the porridge and then microwave it.

I'm sure someone will help me out here otherwise it's trial and error.

jinglbellrocks Fri 03-Jan-14 12:47:43

soop! You go and eat loads of it! Whenever you feel like it. Ok?

thatbags Fri 03-Jan-14 12:51:12

Scottish dancing friend of mine used to have a bowl of porridge before a dance evening.

jinglbellrocks Fri 03-Jan-14 12:55:10

It makes me do jolly woofters. But - hey!

jinglbellrocks Fri 03-Jan-14 14:35:01
