....That is so life affirming? I can get up with the usual slight angst and gloomies, but then that warm, semi liquid, vaguely golden syrup flavoured, mush slides down. And taking on the day suddenly becomes quite possible.

Is the nearest thing we have to mother's milk?

(shame about the mince pie that closely followed this morning's bowlful)

As long as they don't come out sounding like bagpipes jingle. Actually, no, strike that. I love the sound of bagpipes. grin

I was going to say that I bought a big bag of oats from a well known health food shop. Only cost a couple of euro and lasts for ages. I make mine with 25g oats and 300ml milk (semi skimmed) and a pinch of salt. Takes about 3-4 mins in microwave, but I stop it to give it a stir every so often or it overflows.

Fortunately, it doesn't seem to have the same effect on me as it does on jings ! grin

In Russia I am sure I had porridge with soaked raisins. Think they were alcoholic also. My hushand only has salt and milk on his porridge.
Tried to make proper Irish milled oats porridge but nothing made it edible so I stick to porridge oats microwaved.

DH makes the porridge in our house. He uses porridge oats and half milk half water but he insists it has to be done on the hob and not in the microwave. "As it tastes better" confused

Make mine with some dried fruit in it. Thus adding one of my five a day. Buy it in a 1kg plastic bag as I am not susceptible to marketing with men in kilts etc. Verdict is that the waitrose plastic bag porridge is nicer than the Tesco or Asda plastic bag kind, but only a small difference.
It's amazing all the fancy ways they are selling porridge these days at a huge markup. And the waste of a lot of individual packaging.

It has to be Jordans Chunky Traditional with milk for me cooked in the microwave until it is lovely and gloopy and then I add whatever I feel like that day - nuts, dried fruit, seeds, syrup or demerara sugar. I have a big bowlful for lunch when I feel like comfort food. smile

Love porridge for breakfast. I make mine with half water, half skimmed milk, and add some fruit, before finally a spot of manuka honey, bliss.

Eating mine now! Very thick topped with solid honey, kept to one side so as not to melt all over porridge! (Don't like it sloppy! Bit like life really smile) Has to be cooked in a pan tho'
Sains. organic in a plastic bag but prefer Jordans when I can get it.

One measuring cup of rolled oats to three cups skim milk . Thirteen minutes on the lowest microwave power and add raisins and flaked almonds or cream and syrup on dreary days . Keeps me full up and just enough time to empty the dishwasher.

Porridge is so wonderful isn't it? I have it almost every morning, all year round. Usually I add a bit of chopped banana and a sprinkle of dried fruit. Sometimes I vary it by adding a bit of leftovers, e.g. a spoonful of apple sauce, a bit of leftover fruit crumble, or some sweet mincemeat, even a bit of crumbled Christmas cake. For speed I usually have to cook it in the microwave but agree it's much tastier when done on the stove. I have fondest memories of my childhood, with my father putting it in the Rayburn (like an Aga) the night before and leaving it to cook slowly overnight - I can never get it to taste that good.
