Inspired by something just heard on Radio 4, about James Joyce.

"One day I will read Ulysses" (There are probably lots of you that already have, but I haven't blush )

Mishap Fri 31-Jan-14 19:58:44

It'd quite a challenging read.

Ana Fri 31-Jan-14 19:59:32

I haven't, and I don't intend to.

Nelliemoser Fri 31-Jan-14 19:59:47

I vaguely remember DH dragging me off to see the film on what I think was one of those 1970s late night screenings. I cannot really remember anything about it though, except that it seemed dark and dingy the whole way through. I am not tempted.

feetlebaum Fri 31-Jan-14 20:10:29

I'm about a third of the way through Ulysses. To my surprise I'm loving it, but I have to take breaks to read lighter things...

Anne58 Fri 31-Jan-14 20:12:59

That's really encouraging, feetlebaum perhaps when I get round to actually buying and starting it, I might adopt the same policy.

merlotgran Fri 31-Jan-14 20:15:37

I saw the film in the late sixties and was surprised to find we were sitting behind our vicar!

Not tempted to read the book either.

grannyactivist Fri 31-Jan-14 20:45:39

Nearly died of confusion and boredom, but it was a 'must read', so I did.

annodomini Fri 31-Jan-14 20:48:41

In a fit of enthusiasm I downloaded it to the Kindle about 2 1/2 years ago and it's still waiting to be read. blush

Anne58 Fri 31-Jan-14 21:11:15

I hope that others will add their own "one day I will....." things, I didn't intend this thread to be solely about Ulysses! smile

(I've just remembered hearing an interview with that nice Irish chap that was in "Cold Feet" years ago, saying that he was in a bookshop once and heard someone ask "Do you have a copy of that James Joyce's book "Useless" ?)

Paige Fri 31-Jan-14 21:48:57

Reading Ulysses to me would be like a crime and punishment! grin

Eloethan Fri 31-Jan-14 22:04:04

I saw the film when I was about 17/18. I'd expected it to be a bit raunchy (and maybe it was) but all I can remember is feeling perplexed and bored.

mollie Fri 31-Jan-14 22:17:21

I have... not gonna repeat the experience!

ginny Fri 31-Jan-14 22:35:45

Never say 'one day I will...' Do it now.

Ana Fri 31-Jan-14 22:38:04

A fine sentiment, ginny, but often quite hard to do in practical terms!

KatyK Fri 31-Jan-14 22:39:46

Phoenix - ME TOO! I said to DH a few years ago I would love to Ulysses. He said 'no chance, you'd never get through it'. Right - off to the library tomorrow.

durhamjen Fri 31-Jan-14 22:48:16

I agree with you, Ginny.
We used to say one day we would buy a hotel. We spent a few years deciding where we would move to. Then when we'd decided to move to York, my husband fell off a ladder and broke his back.
We did move to York after a couple of years to find out whether he would walk again. We bought a guest house, not quite a hotel, because we could not do all the things we had planned.
Don't put things off if you have big plans.

Nelliemoser Fri 31-Jan-14 22:58:56

It's obviously not GNer's favourite book of the month then! wink

KatyK Fri 31-Jan-14 23:11:10

always wanted to read the ragged trousered philanthropists. told my nephew. he bought it for me and a copy for himself. it was boring and unfathomable. worst book ever.

Come on, ladies, what about some more " One day I will" thoughts?

(although mine might currently be "one day I will refrain from starting totally useless and uninspiring threads on Gransnet.) blush

grannyactivist Sat 01-Feb-14 00:17:16

Actually phoenix I did get the idea of the thread, I just didn't have anything on my 'to do' list that I could think of. One day I will have some thoughts on the subject - and when I do I shall post them. grin

Anne58 Sat 01-Feb-14 00:21:33

grannyactivist much love , and as the saying goes "fair play to you!"

Galen Sat 01-Feb-14 00:25:50

I WILL SEE the northern lights! the golden temple of Amiritser and the Taj Mahal!

LizG Sat 01-Feb-14 00:26:02

One day I will write a book hmm

Galen Sat 01-Feb-14 00:27:42

But not this year!
Although as I've no work after February, I am looking at a P&O cruise end of February to northern lights?
