Has any one else dissolved in tears listening to this song? I love songs that tell a story and so listen very carefully to the lyrics. Each time this song comes on, it makes me cry and I really can't decide whether it is really good or really bad. sad

Another one that gets me at the moment is Don Henley singing 'Take a picture of this' and, as for Meatloaf singing, 'Is nothing Sacred Anymore?', well.... sad

Sorry, but it's really awful. grin

kitty you must see the movie if you haven't seen it "Up".

And speaking rivers grin I've been listening to "The Rose" again recently - some saylove, it is a river (sob), don't know why, and found this ancient recording by Conway Twittty:

Of course, Bette Midler made it her own:

I once saw Conway Twitty perform at Twitty City in Tennessee. This doesn't add to the thread at all, but the concept of Twitty City still makes me grin.

grin maggie

Up is a lovely film

Lona Fri 16-Oct-15 16:52:19

That old man in Up is the image of my dad. I love it.

kittylester Fri 16-Oct-15 17:07:53

How have I missed the film? confused

Grannyknot Fri 16-Oct-15 17:15:16

Grannyknot Fri 16-Oct-15 17:20:13

kitty thank you so much for this thread - for the first time in thirty years I have just bought a brand new CD. The Wonderful Man is in shock! shock

I had a spare hour before my student was due this afternoon and I clicked on Grannyknot's link and listened to 'I wasn't expecting that'. I can't remember when a song had such an impact on me so I googled a few more of Jamie Lawson's songs and I just really, really like his musical style. So much so that after buying his new album (released today) I have also bought one of his previous albums - I'm listening to it now and it's lovely. smile

I love Pentatonix. Such a wonderful young group. Their Christmas song 'mary did you know' brings tears to my eyes.
anither song that moves me is 'Fix you'

Id never heard of this, film or song, so thanks Kitty. We usually have to wait till we are compelled to catch up with DDs and GC in England before we catch up with anything modern. Just played it to DH, who agreed that it is definitely a tear jerker. One we will be buying.

Grannyk and Maggie we were on a long drive yesterday listening to old sixties and seventies CDs including Conway Twitty. It's almost compulsive to sing along with him loudly and badly. grin I love the sound of Twitty City. grin

dusty [thumbs up] smile

I've caught this twice on the radio and been really moved by it. I had no idea who the singer was, so thanks for that!

I Still Haven't Found What Im Looking For from U2's Joshua Tree album

Maggiemaybe Fri 23-Oct-15 11:37:43

Chris Evans got into trouble yesterday for waffling talking over the end of Jamie Lawson's song! Apparently they got a lot of calls (probably mainly from angry GNers). smile

LullyDully Fri 23-Oct-15 12:15:11

I have always enjoyed poetic singer song writers with guitars.

When I was young we used to go to a folk club in Soho to listen to the likes of Al Stewart and others. I haven't heard of Jamie Lawson but he is my kind of singer. Thanks for the find.

Wonderful that the genre lives on with such talent and integrity. That song made me cry, saw UP several years ago , and had forgotten the song.

Aviccis 'Oh Brother always makes me cry, as does Johnny Cash's 'Hurt'.
