Just wondering...

Leticia Sat 21-Nov-15 07:33:00

I think they would be vegetarian ( can't see them eating fellow sea creatures) and live on seaweed and algae.

NfkDumpling Sat 21-Nov-15 08:09:55

Except for those who have decided to spice up the dull algae with a few clams and mussels etc. They use empty mussel shells at o scoop the flesh from sea urchins.

Anya Sat 21-Nov-15 08:11:29

Well it would have to be raw wouldn't it as they must have very limited cooking facilities. I think they would eat fish as I don't agree with Leticia inasmuch as many humans do eat their fellow land creatures.

Oysters sound good to me and some kinds of seaweed....

ninathenana Sat 21-Nov-15 09:02:25

grin that question made me think of DD, she is notorious for her "randomness"
I have it on good authority that they eat shell fish and certain seaweeds.

Grannyknot Sat 21-Nov-15 09:08:10

Sushi.

Stansgran Sat 21-Nov-15 09:16:49

Some sea weeds make a vegetarian gelatine and I suppose they could do jellyfish in aspic. Maybe undersea volcanoes produce hot water funnels to boil things. Bouillabaisse in giant clam shells. Dead whales might produce a stomach that they could stuff like a haggis.no need to add salt .

Shame we can't ask Hans Christian Anderson as he knew all about merpeople.

I think veggie is most likely.

rosequartz Sat 21-Nov-15 10:18:32

I am sure that Ariel doesn't eat fish - after all it would be a kind of cannabilism.
I don't think she would eat any seafood that can speak or sing as they are all friends grin
Probably seaweed and algae - possibly plankton - i don't think plankton sing?

I must ask DGDs if I can borow their Little Mermaid dvd

Goes away singing 'Under the 'Sea' la la la

Galen Sat 21-Nov-15 11:09:34

Ariel was a spirit so she probably lived on whisky

Luckygirl Sat 21-Nov-15 11:21:04

I am contemplating the rest of her gastrointestinal tract and coming up with a few queries. grin

Stansgran Sat 21-Nov-15 11:32:33

Nooooooooo. Mermaids definitely don't.

POGS Sat 21-Nov-15 11:57:05

Depends if they are cannibals I suppose.

Anya Sat 21-Nov-15 12:10:36

You never see obese mermaids do you?

Anya Sat 21-Nov-15 12:11:13

Or old ones.

What happens to the old ones? hmm

Granny23 Sat 21-Nov-15 12:14:20

Or to twist it round - 'What Eats Mermaids?'.

Anya Sat 21-Nov-15 12:24:22

Are you telling us, Granny23 that the reason there are no old mermaids is because they all get eaten first?

rosesarered Sat 21-Nov-15 12:29:46

Sharks?

rosesarered Sat 21-Nov-15 12:30:59

Mind you , have you seen the mermaids in The Pirates of the Carib? Blimey!
They would probably eat the sharks! grin

ninathenana Sat 21-Nov-15 12:37:05

Good point roses grin
I love those films regardless of Johnny

Gagagran Sat 21-Nov-15 13:02:28

Long before Disney I used to tell my DGDs an on-going saga about mermaids and their very favourite food in all the world was seaweed icecream.

rosequartz Sat 21-Nov-15 13:12:14

Ariel was a spirit so she probably lived on whisky
Galen you're talking about the real one - I meant the Disney fictional one wink

Anyway, she looks as if she drinks this Mermaid Drink:
Ingredients
1 shot Amaretto
1 shot Curacao, blue
1 shot Gin
1/2 shot Liqueur, melon (Midori)
1 shot Rum, white
1 shot Tequila, white
1 shot Vodka
3 splashes Pineapple Juice
2 splashes Sour Mix
1 splash Sprite
Mixing Instructions
Shake ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into glass. Garnish with Gummy Fish.

Note the splash of Sprite

Ana Sat 21-Nov-15 13:14:25

Oh dear - did a Sprite have to be sacrificed for the making of this drink...? shock

rosequartz Sat 21-Nov-15 13:18:54

I don't know, but the mermaid would be swimming around very happily after all that.

What do mermaids take for a hangover?

Ana Sat 21-Nov-15 13:35:00

Aqua Seltzer, I should think...
