Am I too late to enter the "throwing a ball for the dog" event? 'Flingers' not allowed, extra points awarded for how quickly you can wrestle the ball out of dogs mouth.

Also there's the strength test, trying to open kitchen door when said dog is lying behind it.

I love this thread, it's so wonderfully silly, and non judgemental.

Judthepud2 Fri 12-Aug-16 10:01:24

Re the men's swimming shorts: I had to stop watching the diving. It was all getting too much blush and I didn't see any budgies wink

NonnaW I have been practising my chuckit skills and have high hopes of a medal.

NonnaW Fri 12-Aug-16 10:24:03

In that caseJud I hope I don't let the team down by one of my efforts landing in a tree!

annodomini Fri 12-Aug-16 10:50:23

An addition to the strength test: getting the top off a bleach bottle. Ingenious solutions will also be permitted.

Mogsmaw Fri 12-Aug-16 11:25:32

I'm taking part in the "sockputt" on ravelry. I'm having to replace all DH's socks with wider ones now he has more swollen ankles. I think that counts!

Charleygirl Fri 12-Aug-16 11:29:00

annodomini in my case it is getting the top off anything and recently I have had to find scissors to open any paper package including an ice cream. Is it me?

Re swimming shorts, some were so flimsy it was hardly worth wearing them.

annodomini Fri 12-Aug-16 12:48:29

No, it isn't you, Charley. The ultimate humiliation was last week when I was struggling to get the top off a bottle of fizzy water. A voice said, 'Let me do that for you, Granny.' An 8-year-old has a better grip than I have. sad But he lives in Oxfordshire and I in Cheshire.

Ana Fri 12-Aug-16 13:18:57

anno, try a pair of nutcrackers for the bleach bottle top - it works for me! smile

Bellanonna Fri 12-Aug-16 13:26:00

I'll try that too ana then. I have to resort to superior male strength as a rule. My pinch just isn't strong enough for those things and I just end up with painful wrists and even elbow and shoulder. Good use for redundant nutcrackers too.

Judthepud2 Fri 12-Aug-16 15:02:18

Years ago DFIL bought me this contraption which can ope just about anything. As my hands and wrists lose their strength, this object has become invaluable!

Judthepud2 Fri 12-Aug-16 15:02:50

*Open

grannylyn65 Fri 12-Aug-16 15:11:06

No, everything is hard to open, can't even peel open a sandwich !!

grannylyn65 Fri 12-Aug-16 15:11:28

Not That I buy them !!

NanKate Fri 12-Aug-16 15:27:30

Charleygirl I am coming over all unnecessary at your comment about the swimming trunks shock.

I love the idea of trying to get the ball out of the dog's mouth grin

My mother had very strong teeth and used to crack open walnuts that way. Sadly I have not followed in her footsteps.

Elegran Fri 12-Aug-16 15:29:31

I have one of those, Judthepud My problem is the other hand - the one trying to hold the jar still while the contraption turns the lid. I can't keep the jar from turning with the lid (and changing hands doesn't help)

annodomini Fri 12-Aug-16 15:50:08

Ana, I have tried the nutcrackers without success. Perhaps I have the wrong kind. hmm

NanKate Fri 12-Aug-16 15:51:04

Do you remember when we used to open jars by putting the in the door jamb ? hmm

Elegran Fri 12-Aug-16 17:24:53

When we moved into our current house, we found that the kitchen door jamb was covered in doorlid marks. No other doors - just that one.

ninathenana Fri 12-Aug-16 17:33:36

To open the lids on glass jars peirce the lid once or twice this releases the pressure and makes it much easier.
Doesn't work for bleach bottles of course. grannylynn sandwich packets gggrrrr !

Elegran Fri 12-Aug-16 17:36:46

Holding the lid under the hot tap for a short while equalises the pressure too. You do have to dry it before trying to open it, or your hands slip on the wet jar.

NanKate Fri 12-Aug-16 18:57:00

What about nail varnish bottles shock

I hope you all (including the men) have had your nails painted red white and blue.

Tizliz Fri 12-Aug-16 19:07:05

I am thinking of giving up watching tennis, not good for my blood pressure at all

Tizliz Fri 12-Aug-16 19:09:51

sorry wrong place to post this, I am sure there must be an event for wrong postings

Jalima Fri 12-Aug-16 19:27:22

Tizliz grin
you've got the gold so far (there may be other competitors)

Anyone up for the backwards Penny Farthing Race ? The winner is the one who reaches the Start first, having started at the end and cycled backwards - simples.
ha ha, reminds me of DGD's toddlers' sack race which she won, but then she turned round and jumped back to the start!

I have one of those contraptions judthepud inherited from MIL. However, I was told that if a jar is difficult to open, then tapping all around the lid with the back (must be back) of a bone-handled (must be bonehandled!!) knife releases the pressure.
So far it has worked for me, leaves a few dents in the lid though.

Just throw the nail varnish away NanKate and buy another one from the £1 shop.

Nails totally unvarnished and looking terrible. I will have an attempt at red, white and blue tomorrow.

Jalima Fri 12-Aug-16 19:27:45

ps it's all that green swimming pool water has done it for my fingernails.
