Slate or plate?

Oh my, i have just read that the latest fad is to serve coffee in avocado skins ! is there no end to the madness ?

Called 'Rockfish' and is built to protrude over the beach. If you can book in advance ask for a table in the conservatory type bit at the front - fantastic views of the water and we watched the tide coming in.

I thought fish and chips in a northern town would be extra special - they were very nice when they eventually arrived (lunch-time so I only had a mini-portion) and the waitress said that we were the most patient customers she had ever had

We had fish and chips in a restaurant overlooking the sea at Exmouth recently. The meal was served on a stainless steel platter lined with a sheet of plain grease proof paper - gave the impression of served in paper but was quite hygienic etc. The peas and other accompaniments came in enamel pots but as they were large portions for one person I assumed it was for ease of sharing.
The best fish and chips I have had for years!

Jalima I agree - and have you noticed that if it is a salad the bottom section always consists of small leaves which are difficult t spear with a fork?!

Does anyone remember the craze of Mediaeval Banquets during the 70/80's ?
I went to one where we were given a wooden platter and a knife with our meal.
I think we were so "merry on mead" that it didn't bother us 30 year olds then !

We had a meal recently at what used to be a nice restaurant. The chips were served in what looked like old enamel camping mugs. Why? We tipped them out onto the plate to eat them.

My new dishwasher instructions say you shouldn't put wooden things in there!!!!!!????? I've always tghought that wooden stuff takes too long to dry. Plates for me too!

which seems to be quite fashionable too! It's really difficult to cut up meat etc when it's in a bowl.
John Lewis restaurant serves salad in a deep bowl and I always ask for a plate so that I can decant it.

I hate wooden boards.
I went to a new eating place this week and had pudding served on an enamel plate, the kind you used for camping years ago! This might be the trend now, but give me a nice china plate or dish every time!

I am at risk from infection and really do not want to be served food on a board or a slate. I was in a bar and ordered a sandwich, it came on a piece of plank with a few crisps alongside. I decided not to make a fuss as I was only lifting the sandwich not cutting up a meal. During the night I took ill and I had the most horrendous stomach upset, can't prove it but am guessing it was the lunch.

We were in a restaurant a little while ago where the meat was skewered and dangling on hooks. Not for me, I'm afraid.

They serve roast lunches on trees, Stillaliveandkickimg! Also on slates, if you Google 'Sunday roast slates'.

I too refuse to eat from a slate or a board. If I see others in the restaurant eating from these when I order I always say I want a plate !!!

I have started specifying that I want my food on a plate. I'm paying, my choice.

What about the shape of plates? Do you have any preference?

I don't think for a moment restaurants would serve a Sunday dinner on a slate. Im also sure that bars don't expect everyone to sip out of a straw and are perfectly willing to serve your drink in a normal glass. Dishes such as lasagna are brought to the table in the dish they were cooked in and Im also sure that a plate can be asked for.

These things are to my mind pretty fun, the norm will always be catered for.

I agree, I hate food served on a slate or board, I prefer a plate. I like a lot of gravy so that would be impossible! I also hate mason jars. Stupid idea. You can only use them if you have a straw because the thread on it makes you dribble! I do not like straws because I do not want to get loads of lines round my mouth which is what it can cause, just like sucking on a fag! When I received a drink in a jar I asked for it to be transferred to a proper glass. I also hate pies/lasagne in oval dishes as you have to have your cutlery virtually vertical to eat it which makes it difficult, so I always have to take it out.

Wooden boards are just as un-hygenic as plastic. I use a fortified glass one to chop stuff up on and sharpen my knives when blunt. I don't really care to be honest. I also like the slate thing that's going on at the moment and am not bug phobic. It's innovative and very hip

Susan we've had fish and chips served with the fish on 'newspaper' and the chips in a mini frying basket.

I think you can buy the chip basket server even in Wilko's these days

I use wooden or bamboo boards in the kitchen and give them a scrub afterwards in hot soapy water. Ceramic or glass boards blunt knives very quickly.

However - I would prefer my dinner to be served on a plate!! And not a large bowl either as it is more difficult to eat from one of those very large bowls.

My mum always used to say "a little bit of dirt don't hurt". I'm still here and very rarely have I asked for or needed antibiotics. I believe my body has built up a great immune system

I remember everything being served in a basket, doubt if it was,, or even could, be cleaned without falling to bits. Yuk!
