Irrational panic!!!

I have gone the other way since retirement. I shop really carefully and only buy what i actually need. When i was working i use to throw everything into the trolley 'just incase' now i have time to go through my cupboards, fridge and freezer before shopping and i find i am using stuff up before the sell or use by date and my cupboards are not over flowing like before. Also i would rather have money in my purse to do something or go somewhere rather than sitting in my kitchen cupboards etc gathering dust!!!

annodomini - I think I could give you a run for your money on being the worst housekeeper! I too have bottles of cleaner (and cleaning gadgets) that rarely see the light of day

Another stock holder here (I refuse to answer to "hoarder"). I regard it as prudent to have things in hand after living through the seventies when instant coffee and sugar were in short supply. Remember? That's my excuse reason anyway!

I'm not really a hoarder. My 'stock' is usually because I panic that we don't have a spare in stock. I blame it on a big family and the batch cooking. That doesn't explain the 3 bottles of mayo - they must gave been an offer!

Dishwasher tablets worry me if I don't have an unopened packet.

Yep, I'm also a 1949 er.

I'm another 1949er and a hoarder. I like to have lots of everything in stock. I think it's because when I was a child money was short and our cupboards were bare. I feel more in control and happier with well stocked cupboards.

I have found peoples of my own heart. I'm never stuck.

This is only an example........
6 packets various pasta.
8 tins soup.
10 tins fruit
30 toilet rolls
6 jumbo kitchen rolls
2 pkts dishwasher capsules
3 soap powder.
5 white vinegar for cleaning
6 fairy liquid
6 Flash with bleach
4 bleach
3 packets tissues
Bolog sauce, sauces, teabags, coffee, Etc etc etc

Then we have the old toaster, the old vacuum cleaner, the old kettle, old suitcases. .....

We only live 5 minutes from Asda.

I honestly never considered myself a hoarder, just efficient. Oh dear, it does look bad written down.

Oh dear, with me it's stationery supplies. I have a big old box full of pens - I check them periodically to see which have dried up - and a ship load of note pads of all shapes and sizes, which I rarely use because I recycle paper that's only printed on one side. And yes, I always take home any pens and pads provided by hotels, just in case....

I've girt enough towels, tea towels, dish cloths and flannels I could probably go a month without washing them.

When my brother was first married his wife asked him what she should cook for their first Christmas - he told her to ask Mum and then half it! We were always eating Christmas leftovers for what seemed like weeks!

My MIL had lots and lots of towels and tea towels (all brand new).

We are still using some of the towels 12 years later and I cannot bring myself to use some of the collectable tea towels.

the family came over at 12 for a barbecue here ( just all gone, am feeling tired out!) and I over provided as usual


A couple of weeks ago the family came over for a barbecue and I asked DS what he would like to cook and opened the fridge to show him - he asked if we were feeding the whole street!
However, what he didn't cook went in the freezer for next time but DH and I still had enough cooked leftovers for the next day. And the girls took some home for their school packed lunch!

Did anyone have that game called 'Pit'? DH is often heard to say 'we have a corner in tomatoes/baked beans/tuna etc'

My DH likes wires, we have bags of them. Black ones, white ones, fat ones, thin ones, long ones, short ones, some with plugs attached, some not. They might come in useful apparently

I have a drawer full of batteries of every size. Unfortunately by the time I need them they have lost most of their power .

Beware if any of you store flour for ages - I had to throw 3 bags away recently because it all had insects crawling about in it!
Apparently if you put a new bag of flour in a plastic bag and put it in freezer for a few days and then store it in the fridge this doesn't happen.

My Mil did that with soap.

I am _ nothing_ like my mil!! Her sister had 50 pairs of unopened American tan tights (size small) stashed away in a wardrobe when she died.

I am no doubt like I am because I take after my dear old dad who stashed things under the bed 'just in case' including an ancient tin of margarine (WW2 stock I think). He always bought bars of soap and kept them for ages because they hardened up and lasted longer.

I've just been emptying out my kitchen cupboards ready for some new ones to be installed and was horrified to find I'd got enough dried fruit squirreled away to make C****** cakes, puddings and mincemeat for ten years at least!!I think a large carrier bagful will be making its way to the food bank collection.
