I am forever warning people that these forums are public and a thread may end up on Facebook.

I really think that GNHQ should put a note on the Forum home page to that effect in big, bold, text - red, underlined, anything to draw attention to that fact. Put it in the welcome email too. Especially as some posters are not only new to GN, but new to forums.

I can't bear to think that an already stressful situation is made worse for someone because their posts are used as a "trailer" on the Facebook page.

(Writing this because I noticed that someone has been caught out by this, how upsetting).

Just went onto Twitter - quick glance seems to show that same stories on FB are tweeted there

maryeliza54 Tue 15-Aug-17 18:10:52

Thanks Grannyknot that's reassuring

MissAdventure Tue 15-Aug-17 18:09:52

Same for me, charleygirl. Yesterday I shared, for the first time, a little bit about my personal life. Wont be doing that again.

maryeliza54 Tue 15-Aug-17 18:09:41

There was one in particular that gave ages of children, health information ( mental health) family relationships etc. I was a bit shock when I read it on here but kept quiet because I had my knuckles wrapped on another thread for saying the information on that was very identifying and potentially outing. There are several aspects aren't there? Will GN put it on FB, will a trawling journalist find it on FB or on here? What right have we to post identifying information about others? We can be as daft as we want about ourselves ( but it's good to be reminded that we might be being daft in what we are revealing).

Charleygirl Tue 15-Aug-17 18:05:57

I had no idea. I have never used FB in my life and have no intention of doing so. OMG is my reaction.

"Bcc" addresses are not included in email "Reply to all":

"If a recipient uses the “Reply to All” option, the reply will not be sent to those individuals in the BCC: field. Occasionally an email recipient may respond to a message using the “Reply to All” feature. If you have placed a large list of recipients in the TO: or CC: field, all of them will receive the reply."

maryeliza54 Tue 15-Aug-17 18:02:47

Good point about the 'bcc' - that's a real issue about email etiquette isn't it? Why would someone use it?

whitewave Tue 15-Aug-17 18:02:26

So had a look. It's weird as the comments just seem to be talking to themselves. I didn't recognise any of the threads, but then I don't look at everything by a mile as I don't have time.

MissAdventure Tue 15-Aug-17 18:00:51

Maybe there should be a "members only" forum? Just for more personal stuff..

Tizliz Tue 15-Aug-17 17:59:37

I think a lot of people don't realise that once you post something on the internet or email it is then public and anyone can quote it. That is why you should be very careful of your Facebook security settings. And never say something you would not want other people to know about.

Just as an extra warning, never do 'reply all' to an email because you cannot see who is 'bcc' . Email is fraught with dangers as you never know if one of the recipients will forward it to all and sundry or if someone's address list is hacked.

whitewave Tue 15-Aug-17 17:59:09

Right will have a look.

MissAdventure Tue 15-Aug-17 17:57:30

I made a thread about being incontinent! angry

maryeliza54 Tue 15-Aug-17 17:57:28

I just went onto the GNFB page - there weren't many comments posted. Go onto FB, put Gransnet in search and their page pops up. Under each post, on the right, it says Comment and if you click on that the comments come up if there are any.

whitewave Tue 15-Aug-17 17:54:52

How do I look?

whitewave Tue 15-Aug-17 17:54:31

Oh how odd so there are parallel discussions? I can't get my head around that

maryeliza54 Tue 15-Aug-17 17:54:13

I wonder if random people would go onto Gransnet FB page? But maybe journalists looking for a story might.

ninathenana Tue 15-Aug-17 17:53:08

whitewave yes people respond.

maryeliza54 Tue 15-Aug-17 17:52:43

Apparently lots of Mumsnet threads end up in the Daily Mail and one was discussed on Loose Women this morning - it was one about a poster being disappointed with her £1700 engagement ring

ninathenana Tue 15-Aug-17 17:51:44

Yes, they are. It happened to me a few months ago with a thread I started, fortunately it was pretty innocuous. I was aware of this, as has been said, although it's a public forum having it on FB is different

whitewave Tue 15-Aug-17 17:45:48

Shame really, as folk find consolation from their posts it seems to me and to realise at they are being spread about willy nilly can be disconcerting I think.

I suppose that we must understand
Post on GN post to the world and his wife.

MissAdventure Tue 15-Aug-17 17:42:48

Well, I shall certainly be keeping a bit more quiet here then. I deliberately choose not to use Facebook, and really dont appreciate threads being put there.

Grannyknot Tue 15-Aug-17 17:42:44

... on the Gransnet Facebook page.

Grannyknot Tue 15-Aug-17 17:41:49

Dunno. I just saw the post from the poster who said her thread had ended up on "Fussbook".

whitewave Tue 15-Aug-17 17:39:40

So do people post stuff in response to the stuff?

MissAdventure Tue 15-Aug-17 17:35:22

I know the forums are public, but I dont understand how threads appear on Facebook. Are they replicated there by gransnet?
