GNHQ please make it clear that these forums are public!

I am forever warning people that these forums are public and a thread may end up on Facebook.

I really think that GNHQ should put a note on the Forum home page to that effect in big, bold, text - red, underlined, anything to draw attention to that fact. Put it in the welcome email too. Especially as some posters are not only new to GN, but new to forums.

I can't bear to think that an already stressful situation is made worse for someone because their posts are used as a "trailer" on the Facebook page.

(Writing this because I noticed that someone has been caught out by this, how upsetting).

We're reading this, thank you for raising it. We do warn people that Gransnet is an open forum and have often emailed posters suggesting they may want to withdraw certain posts if we spot they've posted something very private and identifying and remind them that everything is public. We do try and be sensitive in choosing the discussions to highlight on FB and we will now take care to be even more judicious in future. Many people have come to us via Facebook because they identify with one of the issues raised and will then go on to contribute to the discussion on Gransnet, which they wouldn't have been aware of otherwise.

How do I look?
I have had a look and decided that those blue glasses do nothing for me whatsoever.

Imperfect27 Tue 15-Aug-17 20:23:30

Well, I didn't realise we could end up on FB - I would never post in the same 'open; way on FB. Whilst I realised that these are 'public forums' - I just thought they were 'in house' to other grannies / grandpas! Hmmmm.
So, I visited the FB page and read through. I agree with Luckygirl that many of the pictures chosen to accompany posts are cringe worthy. I also cringed all over again at the thought that any post of mine could end up there! Maybe it was my own failing, but I do not feel this was made clear enough on joining.

Jalima1108 Tue 15-Aug-17 20:27:55

I have just had a look on the FB page and if anyone is worried that they may have posted the same thing on here and on there and could be identified then click on Posted By You and I think your posts should come up and you can then delete them if you wish.

Not tried and tested by me as I have never posted on there but worth a try!

Ana Tue 15-Aug-17 20:29:08

I agree. Although I was well aware that anyone in the world could view the posts on GN, this news about FB has come as a bit of a surprise! Hardly seems to be worth posting anything at all personal now.

rosesarered Tue 15-Aug-17 20:35:45

It would need to be heavily edited first wouldn't it?
Although I do think we should all be more careful with personal details as regards 'problems' rather than just general stuff.

I'm appalled. What right have HQ to transfer posts to fb as and when they feel like it?

Jalima1108 Tue 15-Aug-17 20:43:34

GNHQ can you please make it clear if posts are being transferred on to FB with posters' names OR are is it that some Original Posts are being transferred?
Whatever is happening, there is a link from the FB post to the OP on GN.

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 15-Aug-17 20:47:30

Hello, we don't transfer anything across and don't include posters' names. If you look at our FB page, it is a quote from the thread and a link.

BlueBelle Tue 15-Aug-17 20:48:06

I can feel another petition coming on I don't want to be tweeting or twittering or FBing through GN I don't want to have to remember if I said a, b or c I don't think it's good enough for HQ to say we warn people Lots of folk on here didn't know so it's not been done very well I m afraid Surely we should be asked if we give permission to have our views shared with other mediums

Jalima1108 Tue 15-Aug-17 20:48:22

Thanks Lara

Jalima1108 Tue 15-Aug-17 21:03:40

We've never been to Crete but I would like to go but we would want to visit some of the archaeological sites as well - are these resorts well placed for that as I know it is a very large island?

Jalima1108 Tue 15-Aug-17 21:04:20

Wrong thread!! blush

Jane10 Tue 15-Aug-17 21:07:47

I suppose that, bottom line, GN is a business with something to sell. We provide their product. They can use our comments to attract attention to demonstrate to advertisers that GN is a good place to target their products and also to sell our data to others.
GN isn't a charity run for philanthropic purposes. sad

MissAdventure Tue 15-Aug-17 21:10:17

Well, I'm a bit picky about my product..

Charleygirl Tue 15-Aug-17 21:27:58

BlueBelle I could not agree more. I was aware that anybody could read what we write on GN but to have threads or part of threads transferred to FB without our permission and knowledge is very wrong.

If they want to lose custom, us lot, they are going the right way about it.

Crafting Tue 15-Aug-17 21:32:25

I knew GN was an open forum but had no idea about the link to Facebook. I have avoided Facebook like the plague. I may well not post again I think it is dreadful that people who join GN aren't made aware of this straight away. If I'd have known I wouldn't have joined. I don't want a Facebook account or to be linked to Facebook in any way.

Grannyknot Tue 15-Aug-17 21:33:16

Lara thanks for the clarification. However, how come if you "try to be sensitive etc." did an extremely sensitive post land up on the FB page today (so your selection criteria is flawed). Also, it's one thing informing posters that the forums are public, and another thing altogether to say "By the way, we use the forums to feed the Facebook page and on Twitter". ...

whitewave Tue 15-Aug-17 21:34:35

Do mumsnet do the same?

gillybob Tue 15-Aug-17 21:46:20

I must be naive or stupid or both, but I'm not on Facebook. Does that mean my posts on GN are still there? I'm confused. confused

Grannyknot Tue 15-Aug-17 21:49:39

Apologies for the duff grammar in my previous post.

're GN being a marketable product etc. - we are it! The GN members is what makes it work.

whitewave I'm sure MN does+++

Swanny Tue 15-Aug-17 21:51:24

Charleygirl and Crafting . I thought, like you, that GN posts were available to anyone to view, but that you had to be a member to post anything. I was not aware/did not realise that my posts were liable to also end up on Facebook, which I avoid like the plague. Not happy about this as I have valued the camaraderie and support of GN ...

Thinking about it now, I suppose I should have realised that once it is 'out there' anyone can access my posts and do whatever they like with my words, but I don't like it. Is it not possible to have our comments on OPs restricted to GN members only?

gillybob Tue 15-Aug-17 21:57:25

I do hope not as like swanny and others I also avoid Facebook "like the plague".

Charleygirl Tue 15-Aug-17 22:02:27

Swanny I agree, we can be sensible and/or compassionate when it is warranted, I think you understand what/who I am talking about. We also have a sense of humour. This thread is leaving a nasty taste in my mouth.

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 15-Aug-17 22:15:56

Grannyknot, you're right - it was flawed. There was an error in judgement, we got it wrong and we've taken steps to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Just to clarify for those who are concerned, signing up to Gransnet doesn't mean you are signed up to our Facebook page or anything like that. All of the discussion threads remain on Gransnet. We use our Facebook page in the same way most organisations, charities or businesses do - to show what we are all about. As well as a few links to the most popular discussions (and this is only a line or two), we also share news items from BBC etc, as well as amusing videos and quotes.
